Bishop Meets in the Forenoon Religious – 13; Lay Faithful – 22; Diocesan Clergy - 29

BISHOP’S MESSAGE FOR APRIL 2019 April month is full of activities for all of us – priests, religious and lay faithful. In the first week of the month, we have organized a half-day study session in two batches on Evangelii Gaudium for our priests and deacons. The session on Evangelii Gaudium serves as a preparation for our diocesan Pastoral Consultation. I remind all the priests of the diocese to participate in this study session either on April 2 or 3 at the Pastoral Centre. More details are in the Internos of March, p. 49. We have announced the dates of the Pastoral Consultation 2019 well in time so that all the priests of the diocese participate in it all the three days: April 9, 10 and 11 at the Seminary. Those who require the accommodation, please contact the Rector/ Administrator of the Seminary or the Director of the Pastoral Institute. The time-table of the entire Consultation 2019 programme is announced in this issue of Inter Nos. Your inputs and insights are invaluable. This consultation, which is an expression 80 01–04–2019 Inter Nos of the unum presbyterium is geared to live the Joy of the Gospel and share it with others. The Consultation 2019 will conclude with the Recollection and the Chrism Mass. We bring to your attention the Diocesan Socio-Economic and Pastoral Survey 2019, which is a tool for evolving an effective Diocesan and Parish Pastoral Plan. I am happy that you have participated in the deanery level survey training sessions. The survey work is already progressing in some parishes after providing a parish level training for the parish survey team. Kindly take adequate care to carry out the survey with great responsibility and zeal for accuracy. You may refrain from taking the survey during the Holy Week so as to focus more on the importance of the Holy Week and to facilitate participation of all in the election process. I request Parish Priests to submit the survey tool/ questionnaire to the office of the Vicar General by May 15, 2019. The survey answer-sheets will be returned to respective Parish Priests once the data from survey is collected, tabulated and analyzed. General Elections will be held on April 18, Holy Thursday. I take this opportunity to highlight a few of the points from the Pastoral Letter of the Bishops (CBCI): “We remind ourselves first of all of our duty to exercise our vote. Every citizen above 18 years has the right to vote, but voting is also a sacred obligation we owe to our country. All our Parish Priests are urged to impress on our people this obligation. Every single vote does count. Hence we owe it to ourselves, to our children and to our country to fulfil this sacred duty and thus get involved in bettering the direction of our nation. I urge everyone to pray and to discern in prayer what is best for our country. We have to vote judiciously. The Catholic Church hopes that the General Elections will give us leaders who will listen to the people, understand their anxieties and their needs and respond effectively.” Many of our institutions situated in the Church vicinity will be used for election purposes. Kindly cooperate with the election officers so that the elections are held peacefully. Encourage all our people to vote in the forenoon itself, so that all the faithful are able to participate in the Holy Thursday liturgical celebrations held in the evening. 81 01–04–2019 Inter Nos

We are heading towards the celebration of the great mysteries of our redemption. As we participate in the one priesthood of Christ on Holy Thursday, let us work together hand in hand in the diocese to fulfil the mission of our High Priest Jesus Christ. As Christ offered himself for our good, we too must dedicate ourselves to the good of the people whose pastors we are. Our availability for the people beyond any limits, ready to listen to people at any hour of the day and understand their struggles and suffering will make us Christ like priests. Let us focus on Jesus who suffered, died and rose again for the whole humanity. Let us ponder on this Paschal Mystery in faith, that we may be the instruments of salvation to the people of our time. My hope and prayer is that during this holy time you find blessing and meaning in walking the way of the Cross, more conscious of time with your parishioners and faithful entrusted to your pastoral care and, making this season a true celebration of the joy of our salvation and the Resurrection that brings life to the world. I wish all the priests, religious and the lay faithful of our diocese the joy of the Risen Christ on Easter. Peter Paul Saldanha Bishop of

Please follow the guidelines given in Ordo very strictly. Music during the Liturgy is played only to sustain the singing. There is no room for any kind of rhythm-drum beat music. 2. On Holy Thursday giving of bread at the foot-washing or after the Mass does not have any liturgical significance. In our diocese, we have discontinued this practice in the past years. Still a few parishes continue this practice. Please understand the nature and true spirit of the Liturgy, and discontinue this practice. 3. On Good Friday there is no solemn and public adoration to the Blessed Sacrament. The solemn adoration ends on Holy Thursday by midnight. 4. The Way of the Cross is a popular devotion. It should not be combined with the Celebration of the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion. 5. During the Easter Vigil Service, the Litany of Saints is sung only if there are baptisms; if not, there is no Litany. 6. During the Easter Octave use only the proper liturgy of the day. Other Masses are not permitted. 7. Organize a recollection for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion during this month at the deanery level. The 88 01–04–2019 Inter Nos

topic can be: “Holiness of an Extra-Ordinary Minister” or any relevant topic. At the end, conduct an evaluation of their ministry. 8. Use the responsorial psalms from the Lectionary only for all the occasions. For tunes, you can see Mangala Jyothi app or www.mangalajyothi.com or CD. We have noticed that few parishes and shrines are singing other hymns. Please discontinue this practice. Let us give due respect to the Word of God. 9. During the Liturgy display of Word of God on the LCD screen or in any other forms are strictly not allowed. During the Liturgy of the Word of God people are to be trained to listen to the Word of God as well as to proclaim the Word of God effectively. Please make use of the proper Lectionary to proclaim the readings. In few parishes we have noticed the liturgical books or lectionaries are not in good condition. Please replace them with new books which are easily available at Mangala Jyothi. 10. Masses at homes/wards: Masses can be organized at homes only if there are sick people who are not able to come to church. They are done only on week days, and not on Sundays. Other than this, for any reason, such as, the ward feast, birthday, anniversary, the celebration of Masses at homes/ wards are strictly not allowed. Even after repeated reminders and guidelines, some parishes are not following the norms. In order to avoid confusion and conflicts please follow this norm and cooperate. Educate the people regarding this issue. IV. New Arrivals:

CONSTITUTION OF IN KONKANI

AN EASTER REFLECTION

Why are eggs associated with Easter? Why are they such a powerful symbol of resurrection? The word needs some care. It is not resuscitation, as if Jesus were simply brought back to life, like Lazarus or the widow’s son at Nam (see John 9 and Luke 7:11-15). Resurrection is transformation. The symbols of resurrection are many. So then, why eggs and Easter? An egg is totally changed. What is yellow and white liquid becomes alive with feathers and a chirp. If you look at the liquid of eggs alone, you would never tell what they would become. A liquid goo becomes a chicken – a sea gull, crow or magpie. Another Easter symbol is the seed, or acorn. You can look at a seed and never imagine what colour it may turn out to have. Similarly with a caterpillar and butterfly. These are resurrection symbols because they become something else, totally unforeseen and beautiful. And yet there is continuity: the egg becomes a chicken; an acorn becomes an oak-tree; a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. There are also human resurrection symbols: persons recovering from drug addiction or alcoholism become what they have despaired of happening. They are the same persons, but now transformed; they have new life, new hopes, and new possibilities. Another resurrection symbol might be a teenager becoming an adult: he or she is the same, but different with the new beauties of maturity. The resurrection is an invitation to look around to see transformation, to see what is evil being changed, what is immature becoming adult; what appears inert like an egg or seed sprouting life. But for the Christian the resurrection has a still richer meaning. St. Paul, clearly repeating a catechetical formula that he had learned, says to the Corinthians: I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the 96 01–04–2019 Inter Nos scriptures and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures (1Corinthians 15:3-4). We can tease out this text by looking at accounts of the resurrection. They are quite subtle. The first thing we can see is that Jesus “was raised on the third day.” Who raised him? The Father by the power of the Holy Spirit (see Romans 1:3-4; 8:11). When we look at the resurrection appearances we notice that Jesus is not at first recognised by those who loved him and who were his close associates or disciples. The exception seems to be the Beloved Disciple who had special insight (see John 20:8; 21:7). The others come to faith; indeed faith was necessary to identify Jesus. The Risen Jesus is then the same but different. This can be put in another way by saying that Jesus is not resuscitated, but is resurrected. Christ is risen, and has promised to take us with him. This life is not the end; we too will be transformed in endless life and beauty. Human life is good, but it will end. The resurrection gives hope and meaning to our existence here. In our weakness we will after death be raised in glory. Again there is continuity: it is I (not just my body) that I hope will be raised. As Paul writes: So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body (1 Corinthians 15:42-44). While Christmas and Easter both have Octaves, the Church celebrates the Easter season for a longer period than it does Christmas. “Eastertide” extends to 50 days, and commemorates the 40 days Our Lord spent on earth after His Resurrection to the time of His Ascension into Heaven, as well as the 10 days from the Ascension to the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. On Easter Sunday, let us all join with the chorus of the faithful as we proclaim, “Yes, rejoice and be glad for Christ is truly risen! Alleluia! - Christopher O’Donnell, O.Carm 97 01–04–2019 Inter Nos
