  • The Story of DOCTOR DOLITTLE
1 The Story of DOCTOR DOLITTLE by Hugh Lofting Published by Ichthus Academy Doctor Dolittle ©Ichthus Academy 2 INTRODUCTION There are some of us now reaching middle age who discover themselves to be lamenting the past in one respect if in none other, that there are no books written now for children comparable with those of thirty years ago. I say written FOR children because the new psychological business of writing ABOUT them as though they were small pills or hatched in some especially scientific method is extremely popular today. Writing for children rather than about them is very difficult as everybody who has tried it knows. It can only be done, I am convinced, by somebody having a great deal of the child in his own outlook and sensibilities. Such was the author of "The Little Duke" and "The Dove in the Eagle's Nest," such the author of "A Flatiron for a Farthing," and "The Story of a Short Life." Such, above all, the author of "Alice in Wonderland." Grownups imagine that they can do the trick by adopting baby language and talking down to their very critical audience. There never was a greater mistake. The imagination of the author must be a child's imagination and yet maturely consistent, so that the White Queen in "Alice," for instance, is seen just as a child would see her, but she continues always herself through all her distressing adventures. The supreme touch of the white rabbit pulling on his white gloves as he hastens is again absolutely the child's vision, but the white rabbit as guide and introducer of Alice's adventures belongs to mature grown insight.

At last the Doctor brought out a pound of sausages. I am waiting to see the sun rise. Hugh Lofting. Can you read, Polynesia? And I could see from the silent dreamy way the Doctor took his tea that he was dreadfully upset. It is quite possible we shall be the first white men to land there. I had now learned so much from Polynesia that I could talk to most birds and some animals without a great deal of difficulty. Bob will [] stay with you. Item Price:. It seemed to me that almost every kind of creature from the countryside must be there: a pigeon, a white rat, an owl, a badger, a jackdaw—there was even a small pig, just in from the rainy garden, carefully wiping his feet on the mat while the light from the candle glistened on his wet pink back. The animals are so inconsiderate at times —especially the mothers. But as a matter of fact they behaved quite well—for parents. And in a deep cave in the mountains I heard [] them arrange together to kill Luke the Hermit so that they should get all the gold and he have none. Stokes Co. I often look back upon that night long, long ago.

To everyone's surprise, the Doctor arrives on the back of an enormous locust - and he, too, has reached an enormous size through years of living on the moon. Explainations and thrilling tales of adventure follow the Doctor's return . Author Hugh Lofting was born in Maidenhead in 1886. As a child he kept a miniature zoo and wildlife museum in his mother's linen cupboard and enjoyed making up stories for his family. He later studied engineering in London and the United States, and visited Canada, Africa and the West Indies. After his marriage in 1912 he settled in the United States. Hugh Lofting fought in the trenches during World War I and it was whilst observing the lack of compassion shown to the horses on the battlefields that the idea for Doctor Dolittle was born. He was the main character in letters Hugh sent home from the front to entertain his children. The successful publication of The Story of Doctor Dolittle in 1920 was followed by a further eleven books.
