The purpose of this study was to describe in-service Saudi Arabian art education teachers’ (a) philosophies of education before and after an issues-based art education (IBAE) workshop, (b) perceptions of the IBAE workshop and its products, (c) perception of the importance of IBAE approach, reasons, topics, and challenges after the workshop, and (d) perception of IBAE within the Saudi Arabian context. A mixed-methods approach was followed. The qualitative portion of the study utilized a post-workshop questionnaire and reflective essay completed by 37 participants, and personal teaching journal protocol and focus group discussion from 18 participants who attended the workshop and implemented the IBAE lesson in their classrooms. Analysis of the data confirmed that art teachers’ perspectives towards IBAE positively increased after attending the IBAE workshop. Specifically, in the quantitative findings, participants indicated a positive attitude toward the teaching philosophy of social reconstruction after the IBAE workshop.

This proposal targets two specific demographics; senior citizens and youth . Saudi Arabia’s population is disproportionately i young. It is estimated that more than half of the population is below 20 years old . The senior citizens would be passing down their knowledge and skills with an emphasis on passing down firsthand handicraft skills to the youth of the country. This research focuses on the current need to preserve art in Saudi Arabia and create an intergenerational dialogue through handicrafts. This research emphasizes the need to reconnect with younger generations through hands on classroom experience to teach them about their history through cultural awareness classes. There are several specific art forms that this research has explored including: historical methods/changes, weaving, jewelry making, dallah coffee pot making, pottery making, carving, and calligraphy.

    Explore Saudi Arabia an event at the V&A An Evaluation Kate Pontin BSc MA FMA November 2007 Explore Saudi Arabia An evaluation SUMMARY It is a compliment to Great Britain people to do this and to tell of other cultures. The children take something away... Communication is most important (Saudi Visitor to event). Explore Saudi Arabia was a three-day festival of traditional events held at the V&A on the occasion of the State Visit of the Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah ibn Abdul Aziz to the United Kingdom. The festival was from the 30 October to the 1st November 2007. This evaluation planned to find out how successful the event was in achieving the aims as set by the V&A. The aims and approach were based on an earlier cultural outreach project Image and Identity held in November 2006 but developed and built upon in an initial meeting with Nighut Yousuf, the Jameel Gallery Schools Manager. Key findings were: • The majority of visitors and school groups in particular had a stimulating and enjoyable experience, and appreciated Explore Saudi Arabia, an event held from the 30th October to the 1st November. • Pupils particularly enjoyed the hands-on approach and the opportunity to learn about another culture from young people of that culture. They also enjoyed the opportunity to find out their own name in Arabic when it was written for them for their identity badge. • The aims set for the event were largely successful with 78% of visitors saying they now understood more about Arab culture and in particular that found in Saudi Arabia, a figure higher than the 65% stated in the aim.

Shaftel Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract ALJARED, RAWYA M., Ph.D., May 2018, Interdisciplinary Arts Fueling Petroculture: Contemporary Art From the Arabian Gulf Director of Dissertation: Andrea Frohne The unprecedented transformation of petromodernity in the Arabian Gulf’s landscape and culture during the twentieth century coincided with the formation of the Arabian Gulf nation states. As such, the Arabian Gulf’s oil economy is considered as an important factor in the stability and prosperity of these countries. This oil transformation has generated a modern lifestyle, denoted by petromodernity, which hinges on petroleum as its mode of energy. Petromodernity and its subsequent petroleum culture, or petroculture, serve as the framework for this research analysis of the Arabian Gulf’s contemporary art. The project focuses on how the works of art reflect the manifestation of petroculture on: 1) urban landscape; 2) social behaviors; and 3) environmental issues of the region. Navigating contemporary art in the Arabian Gulf through manifestations of petroculture attest to a new regional field in art history. This dissertation aims to lay out art as a mode of civic engagement and critical space regarding the discourse around the inevitable ramifications of energy transition by opening the possibility for the advocacy and the discussion of this topic within and beyond the region.

The streets and roundabouts are predictably gridlocked: cars pile in, seemingly aimless in their bumper-to-bumper odyssey. There is little cafe culture here, no cinemas and few public goings-on once the sun sets. But last Thursday, the streets leading to Jeddah's corniche were packed for a very different reason: behind the floodlit facade of a half-built mall, a vast exhibition of contemporary art from the kingdom opened its doors.
