In the present study, the rhetorical features of English news headlines, through wordplay investigation, using a sample of 100 headlines were studied. Wordplay is investigated because it leads to the persuasiveness of message that is sometimes so subtle that the readers might not even recognise it. A taxonomy of wordplays was constructed according to Leigh’s (1994) model which made it possible to access a comprehensive checklist. The way the persuasive element, i.e. wordplay, was presented for the English headline readers was examined using the descriptive method and in light of textual rhetorical analysis. The outcome of the study suggests that English news headlines are likely to contain one or more clearly defined wordplay. The most frequent wordplay is that of tropes or more specifically metonymy. -

8 Kedah Excos Sworn in for New Term the Malaysian Insider February 28 , 2012 KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28
8 Kedah excos sworn in for new term The Malaysian Insider February 28 , 2012 KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Eight Kedah state executive councillors (excos) took the oath of office for a new term today at the Istana Anak Bukit in Alor Star, leaving two vacant spots in the state administration led by Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak. They were Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, Datuk Mohamed Taulan Mat Rasul, Datuk Dr Hamdan Mohamed Khalib, Lim Soo Nee, Abd Ghani Ahmad, Tan Joon Long @ Tan Chow Kang, Datuk Siti Ashah Ghazali and S. Manikumar, state news agency Bernama reported. Conspicuously missing were Kedah PAS deputy commissioner I Datuk Phahrolrazi Zawawi and Kedah PAS deputy commissioner II Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh, who had declined to accept their re-appointments. It has been speculated that Phahrolrazi and Ismail are unhappy with Azizan’s (picture) leadership in relation to various issues that have affected his administration in recent years, and have the support of several other excos. Phahrolrazi, who is reported to be on leave until March 1, previously said he had yet to receive an invitation letter from the state government to attend the swearing-in. “I respectfully inform you that I am rejecting the appointment as Kedah exco,” Phahrolrazi wrote in his letter, specifically mentioning Azizan’s appointment offer made on February 15. The PAS leadership said yesterday it wanted all 10 current Kedah state excos sworn in for the 2012 term, despite Mentri Besar Azizan saying only eight would be reinstated. PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali confirmed rumours that Phahrolrazi and Ismail had declined to accept their re-appointments, but stressed that the matter was only a “technical issue.” He said that PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had met with Azizan as well as the two excos on February 17, where they had explained to him “difficulties” in continuing their duties. -

Urban Forms and the Politics of Property in Colonial Hong Kong By
Speculative Modern: Urban Forms and the Politics of Property in Colonial Hong Kong by Cecilia Louise Chu A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Nezar AlSayyad, Chair Professor C. Greig Crysler Professor Eugene F. Irschick Spring 2012 Speculative Modern: Urban Forms and the Politics of Property in Colonial Hong Kong Copyright 2012 by Cecilia Louise Chu 1 Abstract Speculative Modern: Urban Forms and the Politics of Property in Colonial Hong Kong Cecilia Louise Chu Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture University of California, Berkeley Professor Nezar AlSayyad, Chair This dissertation traces the genealogy of property development and emergence of an urban milieu in Hong Kong between the 1870s and mid 1930s. This is a period that saw the transition of colonial rule from one that relied heavily on coercion to one that was increasingly “civil,” in the sense that a growing number of native Chinese came to willingly abide by, if not whole-heartedly accept, the rules and regulations of the colonial state whilst becoming more assertive in exercising their rights under the rule of law. Long hailed for its laissez-faire credentials and market freedom, Hong Kong offers a unique context to study what I call “speculative urbanism,” wherein the colonial government’s heavy reliance on generating revenue from private property supported a lucrative housing market that enriched a large number of native property owners. Although resenting the discrimination they encountered in the colonial territory, they were able to accumulate economic and social capital by working within and around the colonial regulatory system. -
Searching for the Rakyat a People's History of Malaysia
Book Review Searching for the Rakyat A People’s History of Malaysia: With Emphasis on the Development of Nationalism, by Syed Husin Ali. Selangor, Malaysia: Strategic Information and Research Development Centre & Pusat Sejarah Rakyat Berhad, 2018. Pp. 194. ISBN 9789672165101. Matthew Constancio Maglana Santamaria The goal of writing a people’s (rakyat) history can be likened to an elusive search for the people itself. This rather paradoxical statement is not lost to a historian whose core values in scholarship eschew the elite-centric world of the so-called victor’s narrative or the equally skewed, alternative narratives that favor only the stories of the oppressed and the marginalized. “Balance” sits at the center of this approach to writing history, noting the distinguished, if not highly variegated, contributions of individuals, organizations, and movements on the basis of class, gender, race, religion, ethnolinguistic background, and many other sources of plural Malaysian identities. As Syed Husin Ali thoughtfully admits, writing a people’s history is fraught with methodological challenges. Ancient stone inscriptions extoll only the lives of great rajahs or sultans. Archives hardly archive the masses. The developmental trajectory of national cultures often ignores the contribution of certain regions to national life. The same holds true in varying degrees for women, students, and minorities. As such, the people’s historian must rely on other methods such as the collection of oral histories, and insist on the proactive inclusion of the stories of cultural minorities, women, and other marginalized sectors (p. 14). It may be proffered that Syed Husin Ali’s search for a people’s history of Malaysia has met some degree of success. -
