Maria Stuart and Mary, Queen of Scots A BBC documentary explores the entangled lives of Elizabeth and Mary, using their correspondence to help reconstruct their relationship: Bloody Queens: Elizabeth and Mary (BBC Two, 2016) Maria Stuart on screen and radio A slightly shorted version of the play, performed in German, was produced by the television network ZDF in 1985. The 2007 Thalia Theater in Hamburg put on a production was performed in modern dress. The German is spoken fairly quickly, so don’t worry if you can’t untangle it. This is a good example of the drama performed in a modern setting. A radio adaptation of the play by David Farrower, adapted for radio by Robin Brooks, was produced for the BBC Radio 3 ‘Drama on 3’ strand in 2012. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. <b>Life</b> Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733–96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732–1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch. -

His great popularity is not limited to his native country, hut it extends wherever poetry, truth and noble aspirations are valued as a principal means of raising the greatness of man. Johann Friedrich Schiller was born on the 10th of Novem ber, 1759, in Marbach, a little town belonging to the king dom of Wurtemberg. THE NAFF COLLECTION (Location: Range 4, Section 5 – NR Workroom) The Naff Collection is an accumulation of programs, autographed photographs, posters, folders, booklets, announcements and a few other items which tell the story of professional theater in Nashville between the years 1900 and 1960. This material was collected by the late Mrs. L. C. Naff during the period in which she served as secretary to the Rice Bureau and later as manager of the Ryman Auditorium. She bequeathed the collection to Francis Robinson, assistant manager of the Metropolitan Opera, who began his career as an usher at the Ryman. On March 27, 1967, Mr. Robinson made the formal presentation of the collection to the Public Library of Nashville and Davidson County, Charles C. Trabue, chairman of the board, and Marshall Stewart, chief librarian. The public was invited to this ceremony at which the collection was on display. The materials had been listed by chronological periods and arranged by Ann Dorsey, head of the reference department, Edward Durham and Terry Hudson. After the material had remained on exhibit for one month, it was packed for storage. In January 1971, it was decided that the collection should be classified and indexed so that it might be more readily available to researchers and other interested parties. NICOLAI RIEDEL In Zusammenarbeit mit Herman Moens MARBACHER SCHILLER-BIBLIOGRAPHIE 2007 und Nachträge Vorbemerkung Die bibliographische Bestandsaufnahme für das Jahr 2007 setzt die Marbacher Schiller-Bibliographie fort. Neben monographischen Publikationen, Beiträgen in Sammelwerken und Zeitschriften sowie einschlägigen Buchkapiteln werden auch alle zugänglichen Materialien zur Schiller-Rezeption nachgewiesen, wobei ange- sichts der Mengen bei Inszenierungskritiken und Tonträgern (AV-Medien) von Fall zu Fall eine strengere Auswahl zu treffen war. Dennoch bietet diese Bibliographie einen umfassenden Einblick in die vielschichtige Wirkungsgeschichte. Das vermu- tete »Wellental« zwischen den beiden großen Jubiläen in den Jahren 2005 und 2009 gibt es nicht: die philologische wie die publizistische Beschäftigung mit Schiller haben Kontinuität. Die Marbacher Schiller-Bibliographie für das Berichtsjahr 2007 mit Nachträgen hat abermals ihre Systematik und ihr Erscheinungsbild leicht verändert. In Anbe- tracht der Tatsache, dass aus Buch- und Aufsatztiteln nicht immer klar hervorgeht, welche Themen, Zeitgenossen und Vorbilder behandelt oder welche Werke inter- pretiert werden, schien es sinnvoll, auch die Überschriften grösserer Kapitel und einschlägiger Abschnitte als Annotationen in die bibliographische Angabe aufzu- nehmen. Auf diese Weise wird Transparenz erreicht, und der Benutzer erhält eine sehr differenzierte Information über das verzeichnete Dokument und kann rasch entscheiden, ob es für seine Forschungsabsichten von Interesse ist. Die Kommenta- re und Annotationen heben sich typographisch durch Kursivsatz von der formalbi- bliographischen Eintragung ab. Revising Mary Queen of Scots: from Protestant Persecution to Patriarchal Struggle Abstract Since Mary Queen of Scots’ execution in 1587, she has become a symbol of Scottish identity, failed female leadership, and Catholic martyrdom. Throughout the twentieth century, Mary was regularly depicted on screen (Ford, 1936; Froelich, 1940; Jarrott, 1971) as a thrice-wed Catholic queen, unable to rule her country due to her feminine nature and Catholic roots. However, with the rise of third wave feminism and postfeminism in media, coupled with the increased influence of emalef directors and writers, Mary’s characterization has shifted from portraying female/emotional weakness and religious sacrifice ot female/collaborative strength in hardship and a struggle against patriarchal prejudice.
