Transforming KEYNOTES Trevor Blank (State University of New York at Potsdam) How the Mighty Have Fallen: American Celebrity Scandals and Humor Dynamics Online In American society, celebrities are considered “intimate strangers.” Due to the onslaught of gossip columns, magazines, tabloids, television programs (both satirical and genuine), Web-based news dissemination, and now even more ubiquitously through amateur and professional blogging and social media cul- tivation, every detail of celebrity culture is filtered, scrutinized, and presented through a vast web of opinion, manipulation, and perpetual exchange. From tabloids to TMZ.com, narratives of celebrities “gone wild” abound in numerous forms of popular and social media, often glamorizing their seemingly deliberate social deviance. Such exposure embeds within the public an inordinate amount of knowledge about many celebrities whom they do not actually know person- ally. But what happens when our perception of these stars become redefined in the wake of a media event or scandal? And more importantly, what happens when a revered celebrity’s actions are deemed not only out of character, but morally reprehensible? Looking at Internet forums, YouTube comments, social media postings, and the #MeToo hashtag campaign, this paper will examine the rise of humor in response to sexual misconduct allegations waged against established celebrity figures such as Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, and Kevin Spacey, among

Pro-Christian Humor and the Online Carnival Abstract Humor that takes as its comedic object the beliefs, practices, and culture of Christianity has flourished in the digital age via journalistic satire, video sharing, and social network websites. Theory of the comic's use as a moderator between the sacred and the profane provide by Conrad Hyers, and the carnivalesque literary theory of Mikhail Bakhtin, reminds us that humor made at the expense of elements of Christian doctrine and culture can serve to reify and strengthen Christianity in the United States, a conclusion justified by textual analysis of three websites featuring this material. The na alysis supports that an essential rule for successfully blending humor and religion together is to avoid directly leveling the humor at God or at Christianity as a valid religion but rather restricting the ludic treatment to church practices, church culture, and individual behavior. Comments made by readers reveal that a majority approve of the ludic turn, but vehement dissent shows a strong tension between the ludic and the presupposition that religion must remain sacrosanct and solemn.

Neal, Ph.D., Advisor ____________________________________ Examining Committee: Bill J. Leonard, Ph.D., Chair ____________________________________ Jarrod L. Dr. Neal and Dean Leonard helped me from the very start. Without their contributions and encouragement, I may have settled for an ordinary topic. I would also like to thank Dr. Whitaker for ceaselessly pushing me to become a better scholar of religion. I truly value his insights and support. Second, I am extremely grateful to my parents, Tony and Janet, who have remained continuously supportive (emotionally and financially) of all my endeavors even though I dropped the pre-med concentration in favor of studying religion. Spike Lee once said, “Parents ruin dreams more than anyone” and they have, without a doubt, helped make my dreams come true. I love you both very much. To my brothers, Alex and Michael, I love you too, but a little less. Third, I would like to thank my friends who lifted my spirits with a random phone call, text, or Facebook wall post: David, Lauren, Jason, Chris D., Chris W., Steve, Drew, Jeff, Meg, Katie, Sarah J., Molly, Erica, Cassie, Kate, Ryan, Christy, Yasmine, Eric, Sarah L., and Stephanie.

Flanagan 2015 iii THE BRITISH WAR FILM, 1939-1980: CULTURE, HISTORY, AND GENRE Kevin M. Flanagan, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2015 This dissertation argues that discussions of war representation that privilege the nationalistic, heroic, and redemptively sacrificial strand of storytelling that dominate popular memory in Britain ignore a whole counter-history of movies that view war as an occasion to critique through devices like humor, irony, and existential alienation. Instead of selling audiences on what Graham Dawson has called “the pleasure culture of war” (a nationally self-serving mode of talking about and profiting from war memory), many texts about war are motivated by other intellectual and ideological factors. Each chapter includes historical context and periodizing arguments about different moments in British cultural history, explores genre trends, and ends with a comparative analysis of representative examples.

It has been accepted for inclusion in The George Eliot Review by an authorized administrator of DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln. COMIC GEORGE ELIOT By George Scott Christian George Eliot's famous digression on the nature of literary realism in chapter 17 of Adam Bede has long been understood as a kind of aesthetic manifesto for the Victorian novel. Much has been written on Eliot's insistence that a faithful narrative representation of reality must take account of low and middle life, much as Dutch genre painting seeks to imitate quotidian life in all its prosaic detail. What has attracted virtually no attention in discussions of Eliot's ideas on realism, however, is the central importance of comic theory to her realist aesthetic.' Indeed, Eliot's comic theory deeply informs and shapes her well known positivism and insistent faith in the power of sympathetic intersubjective relations to regenerate individual and social life. Robert Martin's classic critique of Victorian comic theory briefly discusses Eliot's views on humour and wit, but fails to link them to broader issues of realism and aesthetics.

Performativity of Japanese Laughter Mio Bryce, Macquarie University, NSW, Australia Hanae Katayama, Macquarie University, NSW, Australia Abstract: Laughter is a complicated and highly sensitive human activity, implying ambivalent elements, such as spontaneity and performativity, innocence and tactics. It can elicit simply cheerful ambience but also facilitate powerful victimisation by provoking embarrassment of the target. Humoristic discourses are often heavily culture-specific in terms of the text and the situation wherein they are expressed. This is particularly true with Japanese humour, due to the insular and circumstantial nature of the language (e.g., Toyama, 1976) and the way communicative protocols are executed.

  • Comic Subjectivity: Žižek and Zupančič's Spiritual Work Of
ISSN 1751-8229 Volume Four, Number Four IJŽS Special Issue - Žižek's Theology Comic Subjectivity: Žižek and Zupančič’s Spiritual Work of Art Marcus Pound, University of Durham, United Kingdom Introduction No contemporary cultural critic cuts as comic a figure as Slavoj Žižek. As John Milbank has recently remarked, “Somewhat like the tragicomic, clown-like Christ he sometimes invokes, he stands before us without the least vestige of pretence, revealing every last symptom of his quirky subjectivity, whilst always allowing this to witness to the universal.” (Milbank 2009: 111). Such a description not only characterizes Žižek, it also serves as a description of the comic process itself as recently articulated by Alenka Zupančič: “comedy is the universal at work” (Zupančič 2008: 27). According to Zupančič, and for reasons to be explained later, this form of comedy contains a more radically “subversive edge” (Zupančič 2008: 33), thus lending itself to Žižek’s critical ambition to re- actualise the Left as a radical political force. Zupančič and Žižek are not the first to employ comedy for its politically subversive edge, nor articulate comic theory in terms of its politically transgressive character, although rarely has such a theory of comedy drawn so explicitly upon a theological framework, whilst offering some key challenges to theology. This paper is an attempt to outline and critically evaluate Zupančič and Žižek’s comic revolt in the light of its theological implications, as well as offer a theological alternative to understanding the comic process in the light of that 1 evaluation. I begin by making the case for a genealogical approach to comedy.
