Born in New Canaan, Queens County, New Brunswick, the son of John Alward and Mary A. Corey, Alward received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Acadia College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1860. In 1871, he received an A.M. degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He studied law in St. John, New Brunswick and was called to the bar of New Brunswick in 1866.He was elected by acclamation to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 1887. Carlton Allen' written in black ink on the top margin of the title page. Prepared for the press and edited, with notes by John C. Allen, Esquire, Barrister at Law. $275.00 Ward Chipman, lawyer, public servant, politician (b at Marblehead, Mass 30 July 1754; d at Fredericton 9 Feb 1824). As a graduate of Harvard College (1770) who assisted the Loyalists forces during the American Revolution, he helped organize the agitation which led to the creation of New Brunswick in 1784. He became the colony's solicitor general, drafted the charter for the city of Saint John, and as clerk of the Crown acted as crown prosecutor in most criminal cases for some 25 years. His law office was a Mecca for students. Chipman's arguments in defence of a black slave in 1800 contributed # 6 to the gradual disappearance of legal slavery in NB. An MLA 1785-95, he was appointed to the council in 1806 and became a judge of the Supreme Court in 1809. As British agent to 2 commissions established to determine the boundary with Maine, he successfully upheld NB's claim to much of the disputed territory. Before his death, he briefly administered the government of the colony. He was arguably the most influential of NB's founding fathers. Thomas Carleton Allen, KC (November 1852 in Fredericton, New Brunswick – 22 September 1927) was a Canadian attorney who was a former mayor of the city of Fredericton, 1890-1892. He was the son of Sir John Campbell Allen and Margaret Austen Drury. His father was for many years Chief Justice of N.B., and mayor of Fredericton in 1851. He was educated at Fredericton Collegiate Schools until 1868. After completing his general studies at the Charlotte County Grammar School, he studied law with Messrs. Botsford and Wetmore of Fredericton and with Messrs. Duff and Jeremiah Norman Travis of St. John. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a degree of Bachelor of Laws and later pursued a special course at the same institution. He was admitted an attorney, Oct. 1874, and was admitted as a barrister the following year. He practiced alone in Fredericton, N. B., until 1878, when he moved to St. John, and became identified with W. B. Chandler under the name of Chandler and Allen, which firm existed until 1883. He was appointed Clerk of the Pleas and Court in Equity, Apr. 1883.

Sir George Eulas Foster, GCMG, (Canadian) PC, (Imperial) PC (September 3, 1847 – December 30, 1931) was a Canadian politician and academic. He coined the phrase "splendid isolation" to praise British foreign policy in the late 19th century. Foster was a Member of Parliament and a Senator in the Canadian Parliament for a total of 45 years, 5 months and 24 days. He enjoys the unique distinction of having served in the cabinets of seven Canadian Prime Ministers: Macdonald, Abbott, Thompson, Bowell, Tupper, Borden and Meighen. He taught in various high schools and seminaries until 1870 when he was appointed Professor of Classics and Ancient Literature in the University of New Brunswick. $45.00

Five black & white photograph postcards of Military Camp, Aldershot [Nova Scotia] numbers 14,15,16,18 & 19 [showings troops of the Nova Scotia Highlanders 85th Overseas Battalion]. Publisher and place of publication not shown, No date (1910s). 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14 x 9cm). The five photographs show various views of the troops dining at long outside tables with barracks and rows of tents. All five in very good condition. $45.00 In 1904, the Camp Aldershot was moved to its present site on 2,810 acres, northwest of Kentville with its southern boundary along the Cornwallis River. The eastern boundary of the base # 22 abutted the Cornwallis Valley Railway which operated north # 22 from Kentville to Kingsport, providing efficient transport of troops and supplies. The Department of Militia and Defence took over administration of the facility from the British Army in 1906. Camp Aldershot saw extensive use during the First World War with in excess of 7,000 soldiers being trained for the infantry at any particular time. Temporary buildings were constructed to house messes and cookhouses, as well as a camp hospital, however most soldiers training at Camp Aldershot during this time were housed in canvas tents. Temporary structures were removed following the armistice in 1918 and the camp reverted to its previous use as a militia training facility, seeing very light use throughout the inter-war period when Canada's military underwent extensive downsizing.

Spine is lightly sunned, end-papers have some offsetting and there is some light foxing to the text. # 23 Lyrics only. TPL 5632, Watters p.29. $125.00 "These 'Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs' were written amidst the various scenes of Missionary life, and intended to promote the work of piety in which the Missionary is engaged." (author's preface). Clergyman William Bullock (1797-1874) was an Anglican missionary for over 30 years in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and was the first dean of diocese of Nova Scotia. In 1854 William Bullock published a collection of 166 hymns, Songs of the church, which he dedicated to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. The best-known of these, “We love the place, O God,” composed for the opening of a new church in Trinity Bay, was later inserted in the official hymnbook of the Church of England. He frequently contributed devotional poems to the Church Times and sent birthday and anniversary greetings in poetic form.

Four black & white photographs and four photograph postcards of individual soldiers of the 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion from World War I plus one photograph postcard of the Canadian Contingent Hospital, Bearwood (England), (1918). $200.00 The four group photographs one is titled in the photograph as 'HYON LEZ MONS LE 21.9. BRE 1918' and is 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.8 x 16.5 cm) with 4 rows of soldiers and one officer on horse-back. This photo has a crease to the top and side not into the image of soldiers. The three other photographs are 5 x 7 inches (12.7 x 18 cm): One is untitled shows a group 6 officers standing in front of low spruce trees and has a few very light creases to the left side. Another is of 27 soldiers in 3 rows in the same location as the officer’s photo with a single crease to the top left corner not into the group. The last photograph is of a company of 85 battalion, approximately 123 soldiers in 8 rows in front of a 2-story building, small crease in the bottom left corner not into group. The four photograph postcards are front France and have no addresses or notes on the verso. Two have 2 soldiers, one with 3 soldiers and 1 with a single soldier. Three are in good condition and one is faded. The final photograph postcard of the Bewarwood hospital has a few spots to the left top corner and on the verso has a note to Mother signed son Orville.

HMCS Bonaventure (CVL 22) was a Majestic class aircraft carrier. She served in the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Forces Maritime Command from 1957 to 1970 # 47 and was the third and the last aircraft carrier to serve Canada. The ship was laid down for the British Royal Navy as HMS Powerful in November 1943. At the end of World War II, work on the ship was suspended in 1946. $75.00
