Nearly all sounds produced by red-bellied piranhas are produced in the context of social interactions between individuals. The low, drumming sounds are typically produced during moderate attacks, while loud, threatened sounds are produced during more vigorous attacks. Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings.

Piranha 3DD (Original Motion Picture Score) - Soundtrack review http://www.reviewgraveyard.com/00_revs/r2012/music/12-06-... Click here to return to the main site. SOUNDTRACK REVIEW Piranha 3DD (Original Motion Picture Score) Composer: Elia Cmiral Lakeshore Records RRP: £13.99 Available 19 June 2012 After the terror unleashed on Lake Victoria in Piranha 3D, the pre-historic school of bloodthirsty piranhas are back. This time, no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of summer’s best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park. Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) reprises his role as the eccentric piranha expert with survivor Paul Scheer and a partially devoured Ving Rhames back for more fish frenzy. David Hasselhoff trades in the sandy beaches of Baywatch to be a celebrity lifeguard at the racy water park... I openly admit that I wasn't expecting much from this score. I mean, come on, the last thing that a follow-up to a spoof monster flick is going to spend time on is its soundtrack. Was I ever wrong. Elia Cmiral has approached this project as a serious film (for the most part). His music stands up incredibly well and is wonderful as a stand alone project. While there's the odd bit of filler material, on the whole this album is full of great little moments and incredible themes. The album, which is made up of 18 tracks, lasts for 44 min, 12 sec. Personal favourite tracks include 'Return of the Piranhas'; 'Trident Aria' (which is a beautiful aria); 'Kiss of Life' (which starts off beautifully before transforming into a track that almost doesn't work.

  • Representations of Mental Illness, Queer Identity, and Abjection in High Tension
“I WON’T LET ANYONE COME BETWEEN US” REPRESENTATIONS OF MENTAL ILLNESS, QUEER IDENTITY, AND ABJECTION IN HIGH TENSION Krista Michelle Wise A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of May 2014 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Marilyn Motz © 2014 Krista Wise All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor In this thesis I analyze the presence of mental illness, queer identity and Kristeva’s theory of abjection in Alexandre Aja’s 2003 film High Tension. Specifically I look at the common trend within the horror genre of scapegoating those who are mentally ill or queer (or both) through High Tension. It is my belief that it is easier for directors, and society as a whole, to target marginalized groups (commonly referred to as the Other) as a means of expressing a “normalized” group’s anxiety in a safe and acceptable manner. High Tension allows audiences to reassure themselves of their sanity and, at the same time, experience hyper violence in a safe setting. Horror films have always targeted the fears of the dominant culture and I use this thesis to analyze the impact damaging perceptions may have on oppressed groups. iv “My mood swings have now turned my dreams into gruesome scenes” – Tech N9ne, “Am I a Psycho?” v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Becca Cragin and Dr. Marilyn Motz for their critique, suggestions, and feedback throughout this process. I consider myself very fortunate to have had their guidance, especially as a first generation MA student.

  • The Contemporary American Horror Film Remake, 2003-2013
RE-ANIMATED: THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN HORROR FILM REMAKE, 2003-2013 Thesis submitted by Laura Mee In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2014 Abstract This doctoral thesis is a study of American horror remakes produced in the years 2003-2013, and it represents a significant academic intervention into an understanding of the horror remaking trend. It addresses the remaking process as one of adaptation, examines the remakes as texts in their own right, and situates them within key cultural, industry and reception contexts. It also shows how remakes have contributed to the horror genre’s evolution over the last decade, despite their frequent denigration by critics and scholars. Chapter One introduces the topic, and sets out the context, scope and approach of the work. Chapter Two reviews the key literature which informs this study, considering studies in adaptation, remaking, horror remakes specifically, and the genre more broadly. Chapter Three explores broad theoretical questions surrounding the remake’s position in a wider culture of cinematic recycling and repetition, and issues of fidelity and taxonomy. Chapter Four examines the ‘reboots’ of one key production company, exploring how changes are made across versions even as promotion relies on nostalgic connections with the originals. Chapter Five discusses a diverse range of slasher film remakes to show how they represent variety and contribute to genre development. Chapter Six considers socio-political themes in 1970s horror films and their contemporary post-9/11 remakes, and Chapter Seven focuses on gender representation and recent genre trends in the rape-revenge remake.

  • Preview of “Randall Larson”
Randall Larson http://www.buysoundtrax.com/larsons_soundtrax_5_29_12.html 13 and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. A neat piano concerto rendition of “Moonlight Sonata” morphs into a percussive electronica interpretation, as if Wendy Carlos was playing it on her Moog with a pair of ball-peen hammers. A very cool Italian Westernesque lead guitar twangs its electrified notes through “No Life,” slowing at the end to a reflective, reverberated solo. Chilled synth cries and burbling electronic pads soar like fireflies across the “Doomsday Garage,” which also reprises that reflected solo guitar motif. “Blues in Phase” adds some very interesting musique concréte styled percussion on top of a bluesy electric bass (“Bug From The City” reprises it sans the industrial percussion), while the echoed taps of “Incidental Phase” capture a flavor of Harry “Friday” Manfredini against a pulse of synth and guitar arpeggios. Guareschi’s strident electric guitar and sharp synth notes give the score a tenacious drive, while a cornucopia of favored electronica textures dapple the score and keep it sonically interesting at all times. It’s a thoroughly pleasing score yet it doesn’t just rely on its retro characteristics to make it work; Guareschi has a fine knack for instrumental texture, sonic grain, and progressive rhythms and sound, and so the score is bright and shiny in its use of its nostalgic elements – the riffs never get stale and never ring false; they maintain a continuous forward motion and a clarity of sound that remains progressive and expressive. Very nice. PIRANHA 3DD/Elia Cmiral/Lakeshore Records Released digitally this week and due out on CD on June 29, Elia Cmiral’s music for the bulging sequel to Alexandre Aja’s 2010 PIRANHA 3D remake is an excellent dramatic adventure score.
