And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. ★ The Pledge of Allegiance Words by Francis Bellamy I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. ★ Flag Etiquette [SEC 171 United States Code] During the rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present, except those in uniform, should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there. (Pub. Pursuant to rule 40(b), a majority of delegates from each of eight states is required to place a candidate in nomination. ★ Written Evidence of Support Evidence of written support necessary to offer a motion or request a roll call shall be submitted to the Secretary of the Convention prior to the consideration of the related measure or matter. Forms will be made available on the Convention floor. Any delegate seeking to remove his or her signature from any report or written evidence of support submitted to the Secretary of the Convention shall notify the Secretary in writing prior to consideration of any related measure or matter.     The People Shaping the Trump Administration Despite Running on a Pledge to ‘Drain the Swamp’ and Crack Down on Special Interests, Donald Trump Has Filled His Transition Team With Lobbyists and Others With Potential Conflicts November 16, 2016 – Donald Trump rode to the White House by raging about alleged rampant corruption in Washington and pledging to “drain the swamp.” Each of the five points in the ethics platform he issued in October focused on diminishing the influence of lobbyists.1 These included a promise to impose a five-year ban on former executive branch officials lobbying the federal government. Trump further promised to crack down on special interest-influence by expanding the definition of lobbyist to include consultants and others who trade on inside government information and expertise.2 But Trump’s nascent transition team, which will shape his administration, is swarming with lobbyists and other special interests. Many of the lobbyists are working for the transition on areas for which they currently are lobbying the federal government. Meanwhile, many of those who aren’t lobbyists appear to have potential conflicts of interest. Vice president-elect Mike Pence reportedly said on November 15 that the transition team would be purged of lobbyists, but the transition team has not made the point official.3 Even if true, that remedy would not address cases such as a defense contractor working on defense interests, or a lawyer for health care interests working on health care reform. Proven Results SCHOOL REFORM OFFICE RELEASES LIST OF POOR-PERFORMING PUBLIC SCHOOLS SET TO CLOSE On Jan. 20. the state School Reform Office released a list of 38 schools facing closure by the end of the school year due to poor academic performance. The list includes 24 schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the state-created Education Achievement Authority in the city of Detroit. The SRO had discussed the potential closures months ago, warning schools that they could be shut down if they showed no academic improvement and continued poor performance from 2014 to 2016. The action could impact more than 18,000 students. The SRO is in the process of sending out closure notices, and has already sent letters to parents of children who attend classes in the 38 schools. It is also in the process of examining which other public schools the children would attend if their school closes. If a school closing creates an unreasonable hardship on the students, or all the other surrounding public schools also on the list, the SRO will pursue other options. Senate Education Committee Chair Phil Pavlov (R-St. Clair) is looking into repealing the state’s “failing schools” law and creating one system to explain how schools are placed on the list. The SRO also announced 79 schools were being released from the state’s Priority School list. On the other hand, you are a steadfast supporter of free speech, and have serious doubts about allowing a Twitter account to dictate your employee’s right to assert his or her sociopolitical views off the clock, while maintaining a job.
