2 A UerY SPecial Friend Some thirty-three years ago, a young mother started cook ing for school cafeterias. The school district wanted her to work for them so badly that they built a play area for her pre school-age children in the kitchen. When her husband came to the Texas South Plains to ----.,,.-._• farm , she came to New Deal. She has raised nine children of ,----~~ her own and taken two others into her home to raise as her L,.., .. ~ i ·--·- · own. ~- She has watched New Deal grow through the past twenty seven years through remodeling and new buildings. The new ' ,' ' . cafeteria completed in 1966 was a dream come true. ' . .L.,.;._- Over the years at New Deal, she has fed over three million meals to 18,000 students, teachers and staff. Today as cafeteria manager, she stretches few dollars into nutritious meals and uses whatever government surplus is - _} _ available to provide energy to keep students going all day - _ ..J.__... every day. She plans to work two more years - until she's 70! The i 985 Roar is gratefully dedicated to

Mrs. Rosie Brown

3 Each of us has a friend - from kindergarten to graduation. Someone to share secret plans, a funny joke, deepest feelings, first love, a broken heart. As we grow and interests change, so do friends; but the memories made with old friends are cherished - never to be lost. Captured here in pictures is 1984-85. The world saw the Challenger shuttle return broken satellites to Earth; elected to a second presidential term by the greatest margin ever (beating the first woman vice-presidential candidate) ; the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and a disastrous poison gas leak which killed over 2,000 in India ... and in New Deal , Lions laughed, loved and lived with new education laws which brought higher standards and ISS.

4 Friends Friends are friends forever If the Lord's the Lord of them. And friends will not say never 'Cuz the welcome will not end.

Though it's hard to let you go In the Father's hands, We know, and a lifetime's not Too long to live as friends.

One of the most important parts of growing up is learning to make friends and be a friend to others. Through our friends, we learn loyalty, trust, honesty, and faith. Without friends we have few joys in life and no one to share our happiness or sorrow with.

The Roar 1985 is planned with you and your friends in mind. Enjoy your book; have your friends sign it.

5 6 Our football team improved last year's record with 5 and 5. Except for Coach Noland, an entire new coaching staff brought new fire and enthusiasm to New Deal. The basketball teams kept that new fire alive and give us lots of thrills with several overtime games before District play even started. During our spare time, we talked on the phone like teenagers have for many years. During lunch, we sometimes found a quiet place to talk about our deep feel ings. Teachers, too, felt a special closeness at New Deal this year, cooperating together in activities students wanted to do. As the little boys in kindergarten played in a toy car, they dreamed of the day when real cars, girls, dates and " big boy stuff'' were part of friends.

42 Superintendent· s .Office There are people who have little contact with us while we are students; but they are essential to the running of the school. Realizing that school and our teachers are helped by these people makes us appreciate them more. 1984-85 is a landmark year for public education in Texas - the passage of House Bill 246 and 72 mean major changes in every aspect of school life. For the men and women re sponsible for seeing that our education is in accordance with the law, this year was a special challenge.

Mr. A. D. Gamblin (Left) has served as Superintendent of Schools for three I years. The job of seeing that all the new changes were carried out fell to Mr. Gamblin.

Mr. Bob Coers (Below) has assumed the job of Administrative Assistant after serving as high school principal for two years. He handles many of the duties required of the superintendent's office - reports, statistical information and is in charge of all Federal programs affecting the school system. Mr. Coers also was responsible for studying the new law and seeing that we got it all done!

Mrs. Lana Young (Far left) is Mr. Bamblin's secretary. She also serves as bookkeeper and purchasing agent for the school system. Her duties can easily in clude anything that no one else has been designated to do.

Mrs. Thelma Ingram (Far left) is the personnel and certification officer for the school system. It is her responsibility to see that all qualifications have been met for teaching staff and informing teachers if they need to go to school - again!!

Class of ·ss This year's Freshman class is one of the largest classes to pass through the halls of New Deal High School. They have -shown their abilities both academically and athletically. The Freshman initiation was hard to handle when school began but they so'on adjusted to being the " low man " on the totem pole. However, there are good leaders in this class and we should expect great things in the future.

1949 Lion team members present at the field's 35th anniversary are (left to right) Coach H. T. Pior, Zeke Harkey, Robert Gentry, Franklin [ unn, Jubert McFarland, Dewey McCullough, Billy Scarbrough, Ben Frank Goble, C. S. Wales, Foy Don Covey, L. M Hobgood, Wayne Worley, Don ;hinn and Lonnie Brownlow.

In a celebration of a lighted football field at New Deal 35 years ago, 20 members of the 1949 team watched this year's Lions down Kress 24-6. Before 1949, football was played in the afternoon in New Deal. On a lighted field, the Lions played Abernathy to a 7-6 victory. Our paths have not crossed since on the football field. Abernathy was praised as a gridiron powerhouse with size and numbers. New Deal had a small team with only 13 players starting workouts in late August. But with intensity and determination, the Lions won. Coach H. T. Pior said, "It was a real high, intense ballgame, and I don't guess I ever had any kids ever play harder than those did that night, given less of a chance to win. " (Coach Pior is at the right.) The 1949 team members had a dinner and reunion at the New Deal Community Club House before the game. They arrived at Faubion Field just in time for kickoff in a school bus and sat together in the stadium. A special half-time program introduc ed them and told their team number and position. Special thanks to Red Attebury for this celebration idea and to County Commis sioner Franklin Dunn and his wife, Addy Lois, for many hours of work on the special event.

102 Parents· Nisht

Parents are often the best friends we have. On Oct. 5 the parents of the foot ball team were recognized. During the pre-game festivities were Juan Zuniga and his parents (top left) ; Scott and Darin Goen with their Dad (top right) ; Bob Vasquez and his Mother (center right) ; and Steve Jerden and his parents (left) . At center left is only half of the line of parents with their sons. This is a proud and touching moment for all concerned.

The cheerleaders started the year by attending camp at Texas Tech. Our cheerleaders worked very hard and won a spirit stick. They also learned a lot of exciting new cheers. During the summer the cheer leaders supported the team and provided refreshments for anyone who was around after "two-a-days" prac tices. During the year the cheerleaders kept spirit high with locker tags, beat tags, hall signs and pep rallies which brought parents and students together in support for the team.

This year's UIL play, "Dino," was a very successful production, and the Cast, Crew and Directors received many awards and honors. At the end of February the long prac tices began, and the play started coming together. During these practices, seventeen people became closer, worked together and established an excitement about being successful and winning. Over a nine-week time, Miss Boston, Coach Goodall, and cast members gathered up props and costumes for the play from people in the community and friends. When March 26 came, "Dino" was ready for competition. District com petition was strong, and New Deal's production was chosen as one of the winning plays to advance to Area competition being held in Petersburg. At district competition, held in Plains, Toby Howell received Best Actor and Lari Masten was chosen to the All-Star Cast. Receiving Honorable Mention were Sheila Kirk, and Vicki Nicholson. At Area, " Dino" wasn't as successful. The play was not chosen to advance, but individual cast members were honored. Receiving All-Star Cast were Toby Howell and Nick Dudley receiving Honorable Mention.
