Third Edition 2015 ROCKET EXHAUST Your 2015 Board of Directors Well, I hope everyone that went to Arizona for the All-Oldsmobile Show had a good time…I know I did!! We had the usual great BBQ at a club member’s house, President around 100 Olds’ in the show, and well, yours truly took home “Best of Show”!! Joe Tannerbauer It was a real shocker for me, as there were so many other beautiful Olds’ out 608 345-3968 there in the field…great to see such a fantastic turnout! And I got to take in a [email protected] couple ball games, and the Desert Botanical Gardens as well…the flowering cactuses were really neat for a Midwesterner like me to see! Vice President Unfortunately, the ride home didn’t go so great—my ’40 stopped idling at a Grant Warner stoplight in Quartzite, AZ, and wouldn’t start again…thanks to Kevin and Charity 951 906-7951 McElroy, and Don and Mary Parson, at least I wasn’t alone! Kevin volunteered [email protected] his 200-mile AAA card, and spent an hour on the phone with them, as AZ and Secretary CA’s AAA couldn’t agree on who should take me the rest of the way once I was towed to Chiriaco Summit!! Fortunately, the AZ tow truck took me the whole way back to Torrance, so the car and I both got home that night. Thanks you Treasurer guys for staying with me the whole time until I was assured of a tow home! Scott Graham Just goes to show you the benefits of being in a “caravan” on a long trip like 310 839-5066 that…I also helped Kevin with some coolant when he had a little leak and [email protected] overheating problem. That’s what Olds friends are for!! Hey, just another reminder…we are switching to a December 1st membership Newsletter Editor renewal date for everyone…should make it easy and painless for everyone! Karon Pierce- When you send in your ballots for board members for 2016, you’ll also send in Warner your renewal form and money!! And for anyone that has to renew before that, 951 743-7182 just send in the form and $5 to get you current until December 1st! And you can [email protected] send in the $15 for next year also if you wish! Contact Treasurer Scott Graham or me if you have any questions! Area Representatives Keep “Rocketing into the Future, and Preserving Oldsmobile’s Past”!! (And Keith Berg keep ‘em rolling down the road if you can…) 562 598-4103 Joe Tannerbauer [email protected] OCSC President

ARIZONA or BUST

That was the slogan of our So Cal Oldsmobile caravan. After shining up our pride and joy, Ruby the Delta queen, our 67 Olds, Mary and I were off to join the “Cautious California Caravan” This consisted of our esteemed club president who left a day earlier in his 40 Olds, Joe Tannerbauer. Joining up were The Parson’s, Don and Mary, Milton Yee, McElroys, Kevin and Charity, Izzo’s, Mike and Char, Jamie and Cheryl Cox, Keith and Sharon Berg, Al and Darlene Allande and Dave Howe in his immaculate1952 wanna be Oldsmobile. The first stop was at Banning, CA., and while looking for the off ramp, to the right of us was Kevin and Charity in their 69 Olds. I had to have my normal pancakes and what better place than the home cooking of Gramma’s Country Kitchen which was our designated stop. The olds club caravan was starting to take shape. After fueling up and breakfast, we were off to points east. Interstate 10 seemed pretty busy for a Friday morning and coming up was Blythe, Ca., the Colorado river and now the Arizona line. We stopped at Quartzite, Az., had a bite to eat and we are “On the Road Again” with our motto, “Go east young man”. Being that people were staying at different motels the caravan began to split up. Traffic started getting super heavy even 50 miles west of town, but we crept on through town at a snail’s pace but finally made it to our hotel, the Drury Inn in Tempe/Phoenix, the so called suburbs. The hotel is one of the best I have ever stayed in. They served breakfast and dinner for the price of your stay, They even had my favorite afternoon snack, hot fresh popcorn right out of the see through heated roll around cart. We settled in and looked forward to having dinner about 15 miles down the road at the home of Az club members Harold and Joni Visser. We arrived at their beautiful home in Gilbert, AZ with all the Oldsmobiles parked on the street. A couple that caught my eye was a 60’s F-85 blue Cutlass which back in the day I thought what a mini car, Who would want that little pip squeek!. Of course now days we are programmed for small cars. Also I loved Jim Schultz 53 Super 88 two door Holiday . We had a super dinner and thanked the Visser’s with our president Joe Tannerbauer giving them a check for $100. Next morning we were up and off to Scottsdale Pavillion for the annual all olds show at McDonalds with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charity. All different make cars were welcomed it’s 1 pm time for judging. My sidekick, Kevin McElroy and I started noticing the heat. Locals from the area said it was unusually hot this week and the mercury hit 91 degrees. We spent most of our time inside Mickey D’s eating ice cream instead of sitting in the sun. I did just get back to the show area in time to hear my name announced that our 1967 Delta 88 won 3rd place in class 700. I heard the announcer say Jamie Cox from Canada won “Long Distance Award”. I was parked next to old time So Cal members Bob and Char La Francois. Walking around I spotted my old time Long Beach neighbor Don Baldwin who had his immaculate 50 88. One other novelty item I had never seen before was the 50/50 where you could buy tickets the length of your car for $25. The Delta’s 18 foot 2 inch length is paying off Ha! NOT! Our club president with the oldest nicest Olds took best of show with his trusty (?) old 40 Olds. Congrats Joe. Great show.. They used to hold the show in February and probably still should due the heat, spring break for the kids and spring training for Pro Baseball. Speaking of baseball, Kevin, Charity, Mary and I had always wanted to see spring training of the Angels at Diablo Tempe stadium which is a beautiful setting. Sunday, only 8 miles from our hotel we watched the Angels get beat by the Cincinnati Reds. After the 4th inning, I had to watch the game from the vending food court because of 98 degree heat and dehydration. I still had a nice time. Had some dinner and back to the hotel pool where Charity got hit in the head with a ball or bean bag that the unsupervised children and teens were throwing around. Heads up people! Let’s go to the hot tub. Monday morning. Time to hit the road, westward to California. Traffic can’t be bad at 10 am in Phoenix. Think again. We made our way west to where Joe was chowing down at the Black Bear Diner. We are headed down the road doing fine at about 65 mph. We stop at a rest stop. Looks like Kevin has a radiator and manifold drip. He pops the cap and Whew!, Orange rusty steam came flying out. He let it cool down and filled it with antifreeze and we were off. Next stop, Quartzite Arizona for gas, food and a tow truck. Yes a tow truck. The 40 wouldn’t start. We tried starting fluid, manually holding the choke open and noticed the choke plated had come off. Joe seemed to think it was the fuel filter. Oh well, let’s find a shade tree and wait for the tow truck to arrive. Just so happens, the tow truck driver is the only one on duty for the area. Charity and Mary are off to get some burgers. Her car is in front of mine. When it started running rough she put it in reverse and to fly back towards my car. She hit the brakes and her trunk flew open and us guys are sitting there with our jaws dropped to the ground. Luckily she had a few more feet to go before their Olds kissed our Olds. WHEW! After numerous phone calls with the Auto Club of California and Arizona, the tow truck driver got the OK to work overtime and take Joe and his “award winning 4o” to Torrance , Ca. for a nominal fee after exhausting the 200 mile limit. So all ended well and Joe didn’t have to accept the “Hard Luck Trophy” at this show anyway but did graciously buy the driver some dinner. We had dinner with Kevin and Charity and said our good byes. Now all I have to do is climb that jammed up under construction Cajon Pass. Third Edition 2015 Technical Korner of Our Classic ’63 Starfire Convertible: January 2015 2014 Rear End Views

By Jamie Cox and Mike Izzo

We came across an ad in October, 2014 from a company called Fabcraft Metalworks based in Southlake, Texas on their new product called "The Trophy Track Special". This is a purpose built limited-slip or posi-trac differential unit for 1957 to 1964 Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs with the 9.3 inch rear end. The limited-slips were called "Anti-Spin Differential" in our 1963 Oldsmobile literature. Only about 10% of ’63 Oldsmobiles had anti-spin units.

We do continual upgrading on our collector car in hopes of keeping it drivable for another 50-plus years. Our thought was that by installing this (anti-spin) option our car would be more versatile for any road or weather condition. At the same time, we felt we could change the original gear ratio of 3.42:1 to 3.08:1 for improved mileage through lower engine RPM’s at highway cruising speeds.

Since we had planned a road trip down to Los Angeles in late February of 2015, we coordinated with Fabcraft to send all of the necessary installation components to J & S Gear of Huntington Beach, California. John at J & S has a long history installing Fabcraft products and was highly recommended by Dave at Fabcraft. A New Trophy Track Special limited-slip differential and a used 3.08:1 ring & pinion arrived prior to our Southern California trip. New 3.08:1 gears are not available, so changing from the original 3.42:1 gears requires the installation of “good” used sets. We delivered the car to John at J & S and they did the installation over a 2 day period involving about 6.5 hours labor. Fabcraft Metalworks has applied their vast experience with, and knowledge of, the 9.3 inch Olds / Pontiac rear end and its components to bring all of the appropriate enhancements to the design of the new Trophy Track limited-slip. Compared to what was available 52 years ago, this new posi unit is very much beefed-up, with its gear design and other features including all AISI 9310 alloy steel "pro-gear" internals and a nodular iron case with thicker walls.

Rocket Circle Page

With the installation completed, the car was test driven and all looked great. We did understand the used 3.08 gears installed appeared to be a good set of matched gears producing a very nice wear pattern. After picking up the car to drive it the 56 miles back to our friend Mike’s home, we noticed a "noise" coming from under the car had developed during the trip. It did not sound like a bearing and if we put the car in "Neutral" the noise quit, so it only happened under "load" while driving at any speed. It did "speed up" as we accelerated and stopped when we stopped. We returned the Starfire to John at J & S for analysis. J & S Gear Co. has a great warranty of 12 months or 12,000 miles but does not cover abuse, racing, off-road use, etc..... so it covered this incident. Over the next week, John went through his checklist to determine the source of our "noise". Where was the noise coming from? Bearings were checked then replaced with new parts…universal joints were inspected then replaced with new units. Even a newly built and balanced drive shaft was installed. The posi unit and gears were inspected for abnormal gear wear and proper tooth contact patterns…and everything looked excellent. Running the car on the hoist offered a quiet test in any gear. The correct gear oil of 85w- 140 non-synthetic and correct special friction modifier had been used. J & S Gear even borrowed a "microphone" set-up from the local GM Dealer to try to pinpoint where the noise was coming from. However, noise can easily telegraph from one area to another so that action did not provide any real conclusions. Brad Duerst, Fabcraft's technical engineer, was also consulted along with gear and rear end specialists he has collaborated with for decades, all in search of an answer. Finally, with J & S having pulled the rear end all apart to find no readily defining evidence of anything wrong, Fabcraft decided to air-freight a complete new limited-slip unit and one of their new Vintage Gears 3.42:1 ring and pinion gear sets. By the way, this was all at their expense in order to allow a complete rebuild of our third member by J & S without investing too many additional man-hours or shop time in the "hunt" for the mystery noise. Speaking of time, my wife and I had run out of time and had to fly back to Canada for key commitments such as Medical Specialist appointments and connecting with a granddaughter arriving from Toronto for her March break and related events. We left our classic car in good hands with Mike, John and Brad knowing they would find the solution. Once all new replacement parts arrived and J & S Gear had an open shop time spot for our ’63 Oldsmobile, the complete installation was done over again. They even worked Saturday. The Starfire was then extensively road tested with no noise this time. Without spending excessive shop time, we can only assume the used set of 3.08:1 gears, while beautiful to the eye and giving a correct set-up pattern, may have been faulty in some way to cause this noise issue. Mike and a local friend then picked up the car and drove it back to Mike's home with no problems. No added costs from J & S Gears…thank you very much, John. We did strike a deal with Fabcraft to help off-set the costs of their new Vintage Gears 3.42 ring and pinion…they were a new gear set th obviously costing more than the used 3.08 set originally acquired. On March 26 we flew back to Los Angeles to organize taking our ’63 Olds Starfire Convertible home, now safe and reliable once again. Both of these "classic car sources" acted very professional in our dilemma to solve this particular puzzling noise and they have over 60 of these new limited-slip differential installations done with no issues. We would not hesitate to recommend both of them to anyone in the future looking at rear end changes or specialty gear set-ups…whether to purchase components outright, purchase components assembled or for a complete installation into your car.

Third Edition 2015 January 2015 Dear Southern California Chapter of the OCA, 2014

During recent years, 1959 car owners in the Puget Sound area of Washington state have enjoyed an annual driving tour.

1959 General Motors Western National Meet, June 27, 28 in Tacoma, WA

For 2015, we’re taking things a bit farther, and have decided to create an extensive ’59 GM meet. Noted “Motorama” book author, David Temple, will be joining us from Texas, with the goal of photographing 1959 GM cars for potential future publication. This fall, Temple will be submitting to publishers his biography of Harley Earl, who exerted some final influence on the

corporation’s 1959 designs. Photos of 1959 General Motors Cars will illustrate the final chapter. In addition, Temple is preparing to pitch a book on the “Fins of ‘59” to publishers, as well as photographing cars for “Collectible Automobile” magazine features.

We hope to re-create the famous 1959 General Motors Passenger Car Panorama photograph

that was shot at the GM Proving Grounds and published as a fold-out in the 1958 General Motors Annual Report. We’ll cruise out to beautiful Port Defiance Park and have dinner at one of Tacoma’s excellent restaurants. We have planned a Sunday, June 28 driving tour along Hood Canal to historic Port Townsend.

We need fine, original or correctly restored 1959 Oldsmobiles! Will you please forward this to any of your members who own these cars?

Please find the attached registration form and schedule for our event.

Our Saturday, June 27 event is planned for the LeMay Family Collection at the Marymount Event Center: http://www.lemaymarymount.org/

We also have a hotel available for those who want to make this a weekend getaway: http://www.silvercloud.com/tacoma

Staying at the hotel is entirely optional, but, in case you wish to do so, there is a room block under “1959 GM” for any night from Thurs., June 25 through Sun., June 27. The discounted king room rate is $169 + tax, and a full breakfast is included. The room block will expire on May 25. Reservations can be made by calling the hotel directly at 253-272-1300 or toll free at 866-820-8448.

Thank you for helping get the word out to any 1959 Oldsmobile owners!

Best regards,

Brian Laurance

I have recently been asked by a past club member, Johnny Johnson, to help liquidate all the salvageable parts from his once beautiful 1970 442 W-30 convertible clone. This car started life as a very straight 70 Cutlass Supreme convertible and is roughly a 10 year old restoration with the engine, interior, top, paint, suspension, and chrome all done at that time. Unfortunatel y, a few weeks back, his grandson was driving the car on the 5 freeway and the left rear tire blew out causing the car to spin, go up an embankment, clip a tree, and slide over a curb before coming to rest back on the freeway facing oncoming traffic. Luckily no one was hurt but the car suffered rear quarter panel and frame damage and has been deemed un-repairable by the insurance company thus the plan to part out the car of all the usable components of which there are many. Please note that this car was meticulously restored / built to 1970 W-30 specs with regard to the body / chassis while the 455 engine was upgraded when built with more modern design components as well as the turbo 400 trans being outfitted with a Gear Vendor overdrive unit. The entire car had just at 10,000 miles on it since the restoration and was always garage kept. Johnny wanted local club members to have the first crack at acquiring some good and difficult to find components at fair prices so I am advertising this first with the email blast as well as through next month's newsletter. After the end of May, I will be advertising the remaining components to all those in the Oldsmobile community across the nation that I am affiliated with and I expect most of those remaining parts will go fast. In closing, I want to point out that part pricing, while to some extent will be negotiable, will not be sold at giveaway prices and will be priced fairly. Bottom line, please don't insult Johnny (or me) with junkyard type price offers as the parts available are not junk and in most cases are not reproductions but factory pieces. This dismantling and sale began 4/25/2015 several parts have already been sold but there are many more. If you are interested call Grant 951 906-7951

FYI Hello to my Friends of Oldsmobiles:

I have created a group on Facebook for 1957 Oldsmobiles. Lots of pictures already and a forum for tech help and knowledge.

If you are not on Facebook I encourage to do so if for no other reason than to get to this Group AS WELL AS the National Antique Oldsmobile Clubgroup. Both are public groups but you must you must ask to join. I promise you that joining Facebook will NOT hurt! It is the 21st century - face it - we have lost and the kids with their electronic gadgets have won! So lets enjoy their toys too! Remember we are all well into the fourth quarter, so should only be doing fun things.

Good day - Pete

FOR SALE: 1962 Starfire coupe. Car has been in outside storage since 2001. I was going to do a restoration on this car, but have changed my mind to concentrate on another project. The car is a California as far as it is known. It has 99k original miles on it. It is complete except for a few trim items. Originally white in color it was repainted black. The large stainless side trim has been painted over. The left front fender is missing that piece however. Car has factory air, power seats, power brakes, power steering , and power windows. Tires are good, engine has good compression. Needs a windshield. Interior is complete. Seats are in great shape and soft. Color is a fawn/green. Door panels are good. Carpet has the factory mats on them still. Needs a padded dash cover. Overall chrome is good. Body is fairly straight. The car was a beach car in Laguna Beach, Ca at one time so there is rust on some body panels. Areas are lower rear fender behind wheel wells, door corners all show some bubbling. One area above passenger door. Only rust thru is on the passenger side B pillar where it meets the deck lid. THERE IS ZERO RUST UNDERNETH THE CAR ANYWHERE OR IN THE INTERIOR UNDER THE SEATS OR ANY FLOOR AREA. TRUNK IS ALSO ROCK SOLID. Super clean! Asking $ 5000 as it sits. The car is located in Cypress , Ca. Thanks Don Lace Cell 714 742-0017

We attempted dusted off the rust and to be competitive. The Car ran consistently in the 10.80’s, which was a result of the weather Saturday and the fire at Prado Dam Sunday. Our Driver learned how to foot brake

again (we had Trans Brake issues) and improved his reaction times with each hit of the throttle but in the end we were 1 in done each day. We hope you can join us in June 20-21st. Remember you can make of weekend out of it just bring your RV. $20.00 is the camping fee $15.00 a day per person. Rocket Circle Page
