Towns Degree Date: June 2017 Abstract This thesis investigates the entanglements of “modernity/coloniality,” Western conceptualizations of time and space, and questions of the “human” as they are situated in contemporary Western science discourse and thought. Through a textual analysis of the 2014 science television documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey presented by famous black astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, I argue Tyson refuses to discuss race as it relates to Western science on three levels in Cosmos: the racialized logic inherent in Western science, the sociohistorical relationship between European colonial racial subjugation and the emergence of contemporary Western science, and Tyson’s experience as a black man in the sciences. I contend that this race-neutral framing of contemporary science discourse further entrenches the myth-lie of science objectivity and neutrality thereby upholding the God-like status of Western science, which as Sylvia Wynter argues, reifies a biologically absolute notion of the human and keeps race as the primary immutable social “organizing principle” of our contemporary global order. ii too, of our present order of knowledge, as the elaborated expression of our present understanding of man’s humanity, and its correlated behavior-motivating schema, in which the culture- systemic conception, Man, is misrepresented as if it were the human itself. If this crisis is to be fundamentally resolved, therefore, this misrepresentation, together with the founding rhetorical strategy which makes it believable must be deconstructed. While concomitant with, and central to, these imposed processes of subjugation was the missionary evangelization, religious Christianization, and secular initiatory ‘epistemologization’ by the West of the peoples it conquered. In brief, ​ ​ by anational I mean an approach to an order of ideas, images, and concepts whose construction and inner logics are independent of the socio-historical ubiquity of the nation. Mainly relying on two concepts, Deleuze and Guattari’s minor literature and James C. Scott’s hidden transcripts, I am elaborating the anational as a hermeneutics allowing us to read against the backdrop of the nation in order to trace and constellate alternative accounts of collectivities as formulated by minority poetries and poetics. The chapter I am workshopping analyzes the work of Gloria Anzaldúa through the lens of the nation form. In relation to the anational, a lot of the work I do in this chapter is still preparatory—I begin to sketch the concept only towards the end of the chapter. Dixon claims t6at his dinosaurian extrapolaiions are based on evolutionary princi- ples, yet he came up with a menagerie of creatures that have little to do with the real dinosaurs of the Mesozoic, and are often wholly implausible.

Tall Timbers Research Station As I review the past six Annual Tall Timbers Fire Ecology Conferences, the 77 very competent papers presented, representing a diversity of disciplines from a large segment of the globe and the many stimulating, inspiring and mind-searching dis­ cussions generated thereby, I am reminded of the following statement from Dobzhansky's Mankind Evolving (1962): Science is cumulative knowledge. This makes scientific theories relatively impermanent, especially during the epochs when knowl­ edge piles up something like geometric progression. Scientists should be conscious of the provisional and transient nature of their attainments. Any scientist worth his salt labors to bring about the obsolescence of his own work. Certainly our efforts have added to "cumulative knowledge" in "something like geometric progression." Many of our ideas have grown, changed and continue to evolve, and we all labor to bring about the obsolescence of our own work. Dobzhansky states additionally: Two rival trends vie constantly for influence in science-spe­ cialization and synthesis. The former usually predominates.
