BBC Oral History Collection, Transcript, Robin Scott
ORAL HISTORY OF THE BBC: ROBIN SC INTERVIEWED BY FRANK GILLARD. SECOND SESSION RECORDED IN BROADCASTING HOUSE, LONDON, 14th January 1981. GILLARD: Let's move on now to the period you spent, quite a brief period really but a very important one, in Radio in the second half of the sixties, when you became Controller Radio 1 8 2. Tell us first of all how the job came to you and forget that I'm here. SCOTT: I had after some three years, three and a half years or so, back with Television Outside Broadcasts, I'd become, not discontented with the job I was doing, but really felt that if I was to realise what I believed to be my potential I should look for an executive position somewhere in the BBC. And thought well why not go back to my first love which was after all Radio, and so I applied for the job of assistant head of Gramophone Department in Broadcasting House. Working therefore to Anna Instone who was Head of the Department for many years, a great many. And I duly applied for this job although it was not at a grade above my own, in fact I don't think it certainly didn't produce any more money, but I wanted in fact to get onto the rung of a different ladder, possibly. I also wanted to get into domestic radio broadcasting which I'd really only contributed programmes to but never enjoyed any kind of executive position, or producer position, having always in radio worked at Bush House. -
Hans Knot International Radio Report December 2011
HANS KNOT INTERNATIONAL RADIO REPORT DECEMBER 2011 Welcome dear radio friends to the December edition of the report and thank you so much for the response I got on last issue. This month I will bring you part two from the Carl Mitchell files and a lot of other memories send in by several readers. Also in name of Martin van der Ven, Rob Olthof and me a big thank you to all those who visited our RadioDay in Amsterdam on November 12th. Around 400 people came over from Australia up till Finland and from Ireland up till Hungarian. All this in perfect harmony and the organizing team wants to express that we’re very thankful for that. Next years even will be on Saturday November 17th as the Casa 400 in Amsterdam again. So put that date into your agenda. Around April we will inform you about the program. Since November 18th many pages with photos from this year’s event can be seen on our special internet pages as well as the whole program of the day in audio. Also a rundown is given of this years winners of the RadioDasy Awards: www.radioday.nl So let’s now start the report with a copy of a newspapercut, which came in months and months ago from Kevin Crown, who wondered what came from the mentioned ‘60’s revival. Well first I’ve to declare that no date or year of the newspapercut can be mentioned as it’s not mentioned on the attachment. I suggest, concerning the contents, that it is from July 1983, but I can be wrong. -

The Pirates and Pop Music Radio
SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Robert Chapman’s broadcasting experience includes BBC local radio in Bristol and Northampton. He has also contributed archive material to Radios One and Four. He is currently Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Performing Arts and Media Studies at Salford College of Technology. The First World AIDS Day
1 On June 5, 1981, the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued its first warning about a relatively rare form of pneumonia among a small group of young gay men in Los Angeles, which was later deter- mined to be AIDS-related. Since that time, tens of millions of people have been infected with HIV worldwide. The Global HIV/AIDS Timeline is designed to serve as an ongoing reference tool for the many political, scientific, cultural, and community developments that have occurred over the history of the epidemic. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done. ~avert.org, 2006 2 While 1981 is generally referred to as the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, scientists believe that HIV was present years before the first case was brought to public attention. In 1959, The first known case of HIV in a human occurs in a person who died in the Congo, later confirmed as hav- ing HIV infection from his preserved blood samples. The authors of the study did not sequence a full virus from his samples, writing that "attempts to amplify HIV-1 fragments of >300 base pairs were unsuccessful, . Howev- er, after numerous attempts, four shorter sequences were obtained" that represented small portions of two of the six genes of the complete AIDS virus. In New York City, on June 28, 1959, Ardouin Antonio, a 49-year-old Jamaican-American shipping clerk dies of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, a disease closely associated with AIDS. -
