You cannot wipe out reality – if you do, you will destroy an intrinsic part of yourselves in the process. The world and its peoples will be far better placed, if you have real love and care without fear, while cherishing others’ rights to co-exist who may be different to you. Signed Chris Somers 47 xxy – Western Australia – January 2003 5 Thesis Abstract: The thesis is the presentation of my life experiences in narrative form and through my own photographic artworks – It is a comprehensive impression of the journey of an intersexed artist who lives in an unforgiving world. Because the photographs often display the naked body, there is a danger of them being construed as pornographic, or at least as merely a commercial enterprise because of photography's easy reproducibility. My photographic artwork however is done as a pure art form and endeavours to reveal a part of the human experience that has had very little acknowledgment in society except through mythology and the rare specialist academic texts. It provides the reader with the chance to see the giant panorama of the intersexed person, hitherto mostly unseen and of which most has been kept from the public gaze inclusive of the affected individuals whose existence for the large part of human history has been and still is locked in secrecy. There has been little attempt by societies to understand the human who resides within the framework of a different gendered or sexed person, resulting in alienation of the individual and the total annihilation of their existence as a worthwhile person. The artworks thus become a defiant reassertion of the humanity of the intersex person. They alert the world to the importance of recognizing that there are other human beings who happen to populate the world and the importance of inclusivity within the greater family who make up the sum total of humanity across nations.     LOUISE MORRISON THE ART OF EDDIE BURRUP Eleven years ago, the true identity of Eddie Burrup, an (apparently) indigenous artist from the North�West of Western Australia was quietly revealed in an article in Art Monthly Australia by Robert Smith.1 Burrup’s works had been included in the 1996 Native Titled Now exhibition and in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in Darwin that same year, accompanied by extensive artist’s notes written in Kriol and photos of his country. However, in March 1997, Elizabeth Durack, an eighty�one year old, white, female, third generation Australian from a West Australian pastoralist family, who was already well known as an artist and a writer, contacted Smith and asked that he make it publicly known that she was the true author of the Burrup works. Within a week of Smith’s article, Durack was being heavily criticised in the national and international media and labelled as either the architect of the greatest artistic hoax in Australia since the Ern Malley affair or perpetrator of a fraud of the same ilk as author Helen Darville�Demidenko. Hoaxer or fraudster, it was Durack’s incursion into indigenous cultural territory that attracted the most vitriolic criticism. Djon Mundine, who was the Curator of Aboriginal Art for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney at the time, stated that Durack’s behaviour was “a fucking obscenity”2 and Wayne Bergmann from the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Cultural Centre described it as “the ultimate act of colonisation.”� I’d like to closely examine Durack’s actions and the accusations levelled at her in relation to the historical, social, political and cultural context in which the works were produced.

    Keynsham Leisure Centre Refurbishment Feedback Report Bath & North East Somerset Council June 2016 Bath and North East Somerset – The place to live, work and visit Introduction Keynsham is set to benefit from a major improvement and enhancement of the town’s leisure centre unveiled by Bath & North East Somerset Council. The enhanced refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre will see the centre transformed into a modern and dynamic leisure facility aimed at motivating more people to get more active more often. Recent plans for the Leisure Centre were produced following feedback from residents, and include an improved sports hall for badminton and other sports, a refurbished swimming pool with viewing gallery, a new teaching pool, as well as significantly enhanced gym facilities and new soft play area The outline scheme was part of an engagement process in which proposals were presented to the public in June 2016. This feedback report relates to the Leisure centre proposals only. A separate report has been produced by the Project Delivery Service in relation to the rest of Riverside and the Fire station site. The proposed enhancements of Keynsham Leisure Centre took into account suggestions made by residents through the Placemaking Plan public consultation in September 2015. Two options were presented which included: Retaining the sports hall (for badminton and other sports) A new teaching pool Refurbished main pool Retaining the current pool viewing gallery New soft play New and improved changing spaces New studio spaces An enhanced fitness suite Retaining the current squash courts The extensive programme of repairs, upgrades and new additions should create a building and facilities that will be a pleasure to use and a real asset to the community long into the future.
