Kaplan) FOREWORD Edith Cowan University is proud to sponsor this important touring exhibition Guy Grey-Smitb's Landscapes of Western Australia. The exhibition is a timely presentation of the work of one of Western Australia's most significant artists from the post-war period. From the University's point of view, this exhibition represents an ideal avenue for the promotion of its own philosophy and aims. The University has identified the strong educational role of the exhibition, in presenting Guy Grey-Smith to generations who have not previously had the opportunity to view a comprehensive body of his art. The educational influence of Edith Cowan University extends beyond the Perth metropolitan area to regional centres throughout Western Australia. The tour of this exhibition clearly links with and supports this regional focus of the University's activities. In addition the University prides itself on its commitment to the arts in Western Australia, through its extensive art collection and the Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts. This exhibition is a further demonstration of the University's support of the State's visual culture. The exhibition curator, Annette Davis, is to be congratulated on her achievements with this exhibition. By the early 1970s Australia had a new sense of its identity; the election of the Whitlam Labor Government in 1972 was the political sign of the nation's readiness for change, a mood that stirred at social, economic and cultural levels of society. It marked the emergence of a new maturity, bringing a climate of excitement and confidence in which Australia's own cultural identity was celebrated for its uniqueness. The shadow of Britain became increasingly indistinct as Australian culture developed on its own terms. The emergence of a strong national cultural identity paralleled Guy Grey-Smith's artistic development. During the 1950s and 1960s he conscientiously applied what he learnt from studying the work of European a1tists. In the 1970s he combined the results

Little published data on the geographical distribution of fossil Bothriembryon exists. In this study, fossil and modern data of Bothriembryon from nine Australian museums and institutes were mapped for the first time. The fossilBothriembryon collection in the Western Australian Museum was curated to current taxonomy. Using this data set, the geological age of fossil and extant species was documented. Twenty two extant Bothriembryon species were identified in the fossil collection, with 15 of these species having a published fossil record for the first time. Several fossil and extant species had range extensions. The geological age span of Bothriembryon was determined as a minimum of Late Oligocene to recent, with extant endemic Western Australian Bothriembryon species determined as younger, traced to Pleistocene age. Extant Bothriembryon species from the Nullarbor region were older, dated Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene.

    The Importance of Western Australia's Waterways There are 208 major waterways in Western Australia with a combined length of more than 25000 km. Forty-eight have been identified as 'wild rivers' due to their near pristine condition. Waterways and their fringing vegetation have important ecological, economic and cultural values. They provide habitat for birds, frogs, reptiles, native fish and macroinvertebrates and form important wildlife corridors between patches of remnant bush. Estuaries, where river and ocean waters mix, connect the land to the sea and have their own unique array of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna. Waterways, and water, have important spiritual and cultural significance for Aboriginal people. Many waterbodies such as rivers, soaks, springs, rock holes and billabongs have Aboriginal sites associated with them. Waterways became a focal point for explorers and settlers with many of the State’s towns located near them. Waterways supply us with food and drinking water, irrigation for agriculture and water for aquaculture and horticulture. Many are internationally recognised and protected for their ecological values, such as breeding grounds and migration stopovers for birds. Some waterways are protected within national parks for their ecosystem values and beauty.

    LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations.
