GRANHOLM GENEALOGY NORSE ROYAL ANCESTRY (Norwegian and Finnish) INTRODUCTION The Norse or Scaninavian mythology has many deities, gods and goddesses. This part begins by listing Norwegian and Finnish ancestors, Njörd and Fjornot. Where the name in the lists are highlighted I have included a biography. There is no clear direct lineage from them, they are intermixed with the Swedish and Danish mythologies. In those separate booklets have I included the information about Odin and others near to him. Here I have shown our lineage from other mythical figures.These lineages do not start from a single person. The lists that follows converge different lineages which all lead to us. So me of the persons are referred to as Kings of Finland. As in all listings of mytological/historical persons there is a gray area where the reader may use his or her imagination in deciding where the transition between myth and history is. But a fact is that somebody was there and had some influence, for instance how a name was established serves as some kind of proof of their existence. See the quotation below: Njörðr's name appears in various place names in Scandinavia, such as Nærdhæwi (now Nalavi), Njærdhavi (now Mjärdevi), Nærdhælunda (now Närlunda), Nierdhatunum (now Närtuna) in Sweden, Njarðvík in eastern Iceland, Njarðarlög and Njarðey (now Nærøy) in Norway. Njörðr's name appears in a word for sponge; Njarðarvöttr. Additionally, in Old Icelandic translations of Classical mythology the Roman god Saturn's name is glossed as "Njörðr". King Thorri of Finland, a descendant of the first king Fornjot, is the 41st great grandfather.

Johansson Rígsþula och Codex Wormianus: Textens funktion ur ett kompilationsperspektiv id studiet av eddadikterna berörs ofta frågor om datering, om muntlig respektive skriftlig tradition och om dikternas proveniens. Dikterna be- handlas ofta som om de vore oförändrade skapelser antingen i en muntlig Vtradition eller i en rent skriftspråklig diktarmiljö, och man gör sällan helt klart var gränserna går mellan de båda. I dessa diskussioner kopplas frågorna om proveniens och ålder ofta vidare till frågor om förkristen respektive kristen tradi- tion och vad vi eventuellt kan utläsa om den förstnämnda ur dikterna. Ur metodo- logisk synpunkt finns det i dessa frågeställningar vissa aspekter som torde vara särskilt viktiga när vi vill komma till ökad insikt om en dikts eller en samling dikt- ers tradering och förändring när de överförs mellan olika traditioner eller kon- texter. Jag vill i denna uppsats diskutera dikten Rígsþula ur ett rent kompilations- perspektiv, det vill säga utifrån frågan om diktens placering i Codex Wormianus och hur en redaktör kan ha behandlat texten när den skulle fogas in i kompila- tionens kontext. Jag försöker härvid bortse från diktens eventuella muntliga bak- grund och från dess tradering fram till dess att den skrivs ned i Codex Wormianus. Rígsþula har en särskild ställning i den fornisländska diktningen. Dikten har mycket gemensamt med eddadikterna till formen, men skiljer sig från dessa i stor utsträckning i sitt innehåll. Vanligtvis brukar den emellertid placeras bland edda- dikterna i utgåvor och vid indelningen av genrer. Dikten beskriver hur Rígr, som i en kort prosainledning identifieras med Heimdallr, vandrar mellan tre gårdar och ger upphov till de olika samhällsklasserna.

The Meanings of Elf and Elves in Medieval England Alaric Timothy Peter Hall Submitted for the degree of Ph.D. Department of English Language, University of Glasgow October, 2004 1 The Meanings of Elf and Elves in Medieval England Abstract Alaric Timothy Peter Hall This thesis investigates the character and role of non-Christian belief in medieval societies, and how we can reconstruct it using written sources. It focuses on Anglo-Saxon culture, contextualising Anglo-Saxon material with analyses of Middle English, Older Scots, Scandinavian and Irish texts. We lack Anglo-Saxon narratives about elves (ælfe, singular ælf), but the word ælf itself is well-attested in Old English texts. By analysing these attestations, it is possible to discover much about the meanings of the word ælf— from which, I argue, it is possible to infer what ælfe were believed to be and to do, and how these beliefs changed over time. Using methodologies inspired by linguistic anthropology (discussed in Chapter 1), I develop these analyses to reconstruct the changing significances of non-Christian beliefs in medieval English-speaking societies, affording new perspectives on Christianisation, health and healing, and group identity, particularly gendering. The body of the thesis, chapters 2–9, is in three parts. Because of its historiographical prominence in discussions of Anglo-Saxon non-Christian beliefs, I begin in Chapter 2 by reassessing Scandinavian comparative evidence for elf-beliefs. I also show that it is possible to correlate the meanings of Old Norse words for supernatural beings with other Scandinavian mythological sources for world-views, providing a case-study supporting similar approaches to Anglo-Saxon evidence.

They are its extended length and two peculiarities in its phrasing: the interruption made by line 7 scáro á scíði [they incised the Vslip of wood] and the phrase in line 12, ørlog seggia [men’s destinies], which seems to be lacking a verb. The text of the strophe, as it appears in the Codex Regius (R; Gks 2365 4º), is given here from the edition by Neckel and Kuhn (1983, 5) and the English translation by Ursula Dronke (1997, 12): Þaðan koma meyiar, margs vitandi, þriár, ór þeim sæ, er und þolli stendr; 5 Urð héto eina, aðra Verðandi — scáro á scíði —, Sculd ina þriðio; 9 þær log logðo, þær líf kuro alda bornom, ørlog seggia. [From there come maidens deep in knowledge, three, from the lake that lies under the tree.
