Friendship and cooperation were unimpaired despite worries on the part of Mao Zedong about some of Khrushchev’s actions at the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). In fact, Khrushchev’s bold criticism of Stalin suited Mao Zedong because it relieved some pressure on him. Generally speaking, the guiding principles of the 20th Congress of the CPSU were identical with those of the 8th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),1 to whose views 24 Moscow attached great importance at the time.     ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: CLASSIFYING BIAS IN LARGE MULTILINGUAL CORPORA VIA CROWDSOURCING AND TOPIC MODELING Team BIASES: Brianna Caljean, Katherine Calvert, Ashley Chang, Elliot Frank, Rosana Garay Jáuregui, Geoffrey Palo, Ryan Rinker, Gareth Weakly, Nicolette Wolfrey, William Zhang Thesis Directed By: Dr. David Zajic, Ph.D. Our project extends previous algorithmic approaches to finding bias in large text corpora. We used multilingual topic modeling to examine language-specific bias in the English, Spanish, and Russian versions of Wikipedia. In particular, we placed Spanish articles discussing the Cold War on a Russian-English viewpoint spectrum based on similarity in topic distribution. We then crowdsourced human annotations of Spanish Wikipedia articles for comparison to the topic model. Our hypothesis was that human annotators and topic modeling algorithms would provide correlated results for bias. However, that was not the case. Our annotators indicated that humans were more perceptive of sentiment in article text than topic distribution, which suggests that our classifier provides a different perspective on a text’s bias. T The primary external influence in Eastern Europe remains the Soviet Union. One of the resualts of the Second World War was that Eastern Europe fell into the Soviet sphere of influence; and, al- though to a lesser extent, it continues there until this day. At first, under Stalin, Eastern Europe increasingly became something close to a part of the Soviet Union. One of the tasks of his suc- cessors was to begin an imperial readjustment, in which Eastern Europe was the lesser problem; China, we now know, was the major one. Paradoxically, it was largely not in spite of but because of the 1956 Polish October and Hungarian Revolution that by the late nineteen fifties Jrushchev seemed. to be doing quite well in Eastern Europe. (We did not know then what we do now: he was already doing badly with China,) Khrushchev's program of de-Stalinization probably strengthened the Communist regime, at least for the pres- ent, within the Soviet Union, and it to some extent helped the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe. Abstract The disruption oF the Sino-Soviet SuMMit was a significant, contributing Factor in the violent crackdown in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989. The suMMit was a landMark political event For the People’s Republic oF China (PRC), attracting worldwide media attention to Beijing. This presented a unique opportunity to show that China’s brand oF socialism was healthy and that the country was ready to solidiFy its iMproving relationship with the Soviet Union. Despite the advice oF Chinese intellectuals and governMental threats, the students Made a conscious decision to exploit, and thereby disrupt, the suMMit. The deMonstration coMpletely overshadowed the suMMit and created an international perception oF the Chinese governMent that called into doubt its very sovereignty. GovernMent leaders were huMiliated on the world stage. This huMiliation contributed to the decision to institute Martial law, which created an increasingly volatile atMosphere in Beijing. Paranoid oF potential protester violence created by Martial law, the governMent ordered troops to clear the Square.
