  • Sachen Foundation 2020 Annual Report
2020~ 2 ~ As I am writing this report, the verdict of George Floyd’s case was just announced in Minnesota. I took time to reflect on that day, May 25, 2020, when a mobile phone camera documented the last minutes of George Floyd’s life – a moment that sent shockwaves across the globe – and contemplated the causes and conditions that brought about this verdict. I reflected on what Buddha taught about the preciousness of human birth and the potential for all sentient beings. Most of all, I contemplated on the Buddha’s teaching of loving kindness, compassion, and impermanence. More and faster than ever, science and technology seem to be the driving changes in our relationships with each other and with reality. Scientific discoveries are limited by the level of technological advancement, but the human mind does not have such limitations. We often find that advancements in new technologies lead to scientific discoveries that align with what the Buddha taught. As a result, I feel the Dharma is becoming more relevant in our modern scientific world as vast new knowledges are discovered about reality, the ever-changing i universe, and insights into the human brain. The view and mind training teachings in Buddhadharma can also be beneficial considering the developing and expanding mental health challenges faced by many today. This presents an opportunity and responsibility for us to share the wisdom and skillful methods of the Buddhadharma in ways that can reach people who are searching and can be benefited. During 2020, under the guidance of His Holiness the 42nd Sakya Trizin, Sachen Foundation’s focus evolved to incorporate the use of technology in the development of Dharma education programs for the lay community.

During the course of my research, this journey took me to rigorous intellectual study and internal transformation, as well as leading me to explore Tibet and Nepal, and to more than four years of living in Tibetan religious communities in the Indian Himalayas. During my years of dissertation research, I was fortunate to meet a great array of bright, erudite, committed, kind, humble and spiritual minds, who have not only offered their help and inspiration, but also their deeply transformative example. I am particularly grateful to three individuals for their invaluable support in my dissertation project: Professor David Germano for his brilliant and patient guidance in all the stages of my research, Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche for his extraordinary insight and kindness in my contemplative training and Khenpo Nyima Döndrup for his friendship, untiring answers to my questions about Northern Treasures scriptures and generous guidance to Tibetan religious culture. In addition to Khenpo Nyima Döndrup, I am very grateful to have been able to study the texts of The Unimpeded Realization and The Self-Emergent Self-Arisen Primordial Purity with several other learned teachers: Khenpo Chöwang from Gonjang monastery in Sikkim, Khenpo Lha Tsering from the Nyingma Shedra in Sikkim, Khenpo Sönam Tashi from Dorjé Drak monastery in Shimla, Khenpo Chöying from the Khordong monastery in Kham and Lopön Ani Lhamo from the Namdroling monastery in Bylakuppe.

chös khor marpa house news ling Winter 2011/2012 BUDDHIST MEDITATION AND RETREAT CENTRE Summer 2017 A Time of Great Gifts... From The Trustees • From The Committee John Howard’s Four Foundations Course • Easter Teachings • Karmapa in Battersea Preparation for the Empowerment • The Vajrakilaya Empowerment Precious Marpa Life • Poems from the Sangha Trustee News chös t has been an incredible Ilast 6 months, the busiest I’ve known for a long while, khor so it’s hard to know where to begin! At the end of 2016, ling following Rinpoche’s announcements during BUDDHIST his Birthday celebrations, we started planning for a MEDITATION AND new shrine and a stupa. RETREAT CENTRE Rinpoche’s wish was that an empowerment shrine should also be ready for the visit of HH Sakya Trizin in June. So it is with thanks to Stevan, our wonderfully skilled carpenter, and a handful of others who participated in its painting, that the empowerment shrine was present, in full glory, for the Vajrakilaya Empowerment in June. This shrine is an offering to Rinpoche, and we hope we won’t have to wait too long before he uses it for the empowerments he said he will give in the coming year! The design for the main shrine has been finalised, oak has been purchased, and Stevan has now started working on it. It will replace the existing shrine, and at the same time the shrine room will have a refurbishment. I have to say from knowing Stevan’s Marpa House craftmanship, it is going to be very beautiful. Chös Khor Ling The stupa has also been quietly progressing in the Rectory Lane background.
