  • 1 Exploring Detective Films in the 1930S and 1940S: Genre, Society and Hollywood
Notes 1 Exploring Detective Films in the 1930s and 1940s: Genre, Society and Hollywood 1. For a discussion of Hollywood’s predilection for action in narratives, see Elsaesser (1981) and the analysis of this essay in Maltby (1995: 352−4). 2. An important strand of recent criticism of literary detective fiction has emphasised the widening of the genre to incorporate female and non-white protagonists (Munt, 1994; Pepper, 2000; Bertens and D’Haen, 2001; Knight, 2004: 162−94) but, despite Hollywood’s use of Asian detectives in the 1930s and 1940s, these accounts are more relevant to contemporary Hollywood crime films. 3. This was not only the case in B- Movies, however, as Warner’s films, includ- ing headliners, in the early 1930s generally came in at only about an hour and one- quarter due to budgetary restraints and pace was a similar neces- sity. See Miller (1973: 4−5). 4. See Palmer (1991: 124) for an alternative view which argues that ‘the crimi- nal mystery dominates each text to the extent that all the events in the narrative contribute to the enigma and its solution by the hero’. 5. Field (2009: 27−8), for example, takes the second position in order to create a binary opposition between the cerebral British whodunnit and the visceral American suspense thriller. 6. The Republic serials were: Dick Tracyy (1937), Dick Tracy Returns (1938), Dick Tracy’s G- Men (1939) and Dick Tracy vs Crime, Inc. (1941) (Langman and Finn, 1995b: 80). 7. The use of the series’ detectives in spy-hunter films after 1941, however, modifies this relationship by giving them at least an ideological affiliation with the discourses of freedom and democracy that Hollywood deploys in its propagandistic representation of the Allies in general and the United States in particular.

  • Women's Leadership in Primetime Television an Introductory Study
Women’s Leadership in Primetime Television An Introductory Study Natalie Greene Spring 2009 General University Honors Capstone Advisor: Karen O’Connor Greene 1 Women’s Leadership in Prime-time Television: An Introductory Study Introduction When television executives report their core audience, women always come out ahead. A 2007 Nielsen Media Research report showed that, with only two exceptions, every broadcast network channel had more female viewers than men. ABC’s female audience almost doubled its male audience during the 2007-08 season (Atkinson, 2008). 1 Women onscreen, however, seem to reflect a different reality, making up only 43% of characters in the prime-time 2007-08 season (Lauzen, 2008). 2 As studies going back as far as the 1970s show, women on screen not only fail to represent the proportional makeup of women in society, they also overwhelmingly show a stereotypically gendered version of women (McNeil, 1975; Signorielli and Bacue, 1999; United States Commission on Civil Rights, 1977). This paper aims to address the evolution of women’s leadership in prime-time network scripted television from 1950 to 2008. Because of the way that women have been traditionally marginalized in television, it is important to study the shows that have featured women as lead characters. Characters such as Lucy Ricardo ( I Love Lucy, 1951-1960) influenced later female leads such as Ann Marie ( That Girl, 1966-1971), Mary Richards ( The Mary Tyler Moore Show, 1970-1977) and Murphy Brown ( Murphy Brown, 1988-1998). Thus, along with an introduction to socialization theory and feminist television criticism, this paper covers a selection of some of the most influential female characters and women-centered shows of this period.

The shows they wrote for included “The Honeymooners,” ‘The Phil Silvers Show,” “The Red Skelton Hour,” Bob Hope specials, “Here’s Lucy,” “All in the Family,” and “Maude.” These five writers were working in the earliest days of the medium and spent years writing for the personalities—from performers to producers—who pioneered and defined it. • OPUNTIA 472 Middle April 2020
OPUNTIA 472 Middle April 2020 Opuntia is published by Dale Speirs, Calgary, Alberta. It is posted on www.efanzines.com and www.fanac.org. My e-mail address is: [email protected] When sending me an emailed letter of comment, please include your name and town in the message. About The Cover: As I strolled about for exercise on April 10, this was seen on Passchendaele Road SW in the Garrison Woods subdivision. THE VIRUS: PART 4 photos by Dale Speirs It was incredible how fast Canadian society went from taken-for-granted freedoms to life in Soviet Russia. It only took three weeks to lose freedom of travel, freedom of assembly, and freedom of association. I now do my supermarket shopping early in the morning so that I don’t have to line up outside like a Soviet shopper waiting to buy bread. This photo was at my neighbourhood Safeway on April 4. I’ve never seen so many people out walking in my neighbourhood. When we approach each other along the sidewalk, the new social etiquette is for one person or pair to step out into the road and pass by 2 metres away. Since there is little or no traffic, this is not dangerous. Joggers puff down the centre line. Families with small children get sidewalk priority, while a single pedestrian such as myself makes the detour. The children I’ve seen out with their parents look happy, but then again I live in a comfortable middle-class neighbourhood. One wonders what psychological effect this will have on the young generation in distressed families of poorer neighbourhoods.
