Issue No. 93 Friday 4th March 2016 The Principal’s Update This week we have been celebrating St David’s Day in the Senior School and College. The week has finished with our Eisteddfod which has, as ever, been an outstanding occasion with excellent entries and performances from students. The day culminated with the greatly anticipated House choir competition and this year the choirs came up with varied and entertaining renditions of Take That’s hit, Shine. Congratulations to all, particularly the winning House choir, Baldwin. Many congratulations to the overall winning House, which was Baldwin. We are extremely grateful to all the staff who made it such a special occasion, it certainly is one of the highlights in the Howell’s calendar. On Sunday we thoroughly enjoyed attending the launch of and the naming ceremony for our new Quad Scull Rowing Boat which has been named “Courage” at Llandaff Rowing Club. It was an exciting occasion and we’re sure our students will enjoy developing their rowing skills. Howell's students make their voices heard! Eleven members of the Senior School Debating Club, drawn from Years 8-11, went to the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay on February 26th to participate in a EurVoice event. Flying Theatre give French performance Recently, Year 7, 8 and 9 students studying French got an amazing opportunity, organised by the French department, to watch a Flying Theatre performance. Click here for more information. Salem awarded the Dr Lucy Campion Scholarship Well done to Head Girl Salem Y. who has been awarded the GDST Dr Lucy Campion Scholarship. Lily qualifies for British tumbling finals Lily R (Year 8) represented Howell's and her county for the Cardiff and Vale Schools' tumble and vault competition on Monday 29th February. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Congratulations to Marianne E (Year 12) who has successfully completed her Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Dr Southern was delighted to attend a Gold presentation at St James’ Palace during which 6 students were presented with their awards. Howell’s students win the Southern England and Welsh heat of BPW Public Speaking Competition. On Sunday 28th February a team of three College students took part in the Southern England and Wales heat of the BPW Public Speaking Competition in Bristol. Year 5 students shine at ESU Primary Schools’ Public Speaking Competition Following last week’s workshop on public speaking, we welcomed back local primary school children to compete in the fourth English Speaking Union Primary Schools’ Public Speaking Competition on the evening of Wednesday 2nd March. Caitlin attending 'Women in Science' event on International Women’s Day Many congratulations to Year 12’s Caitlin D who has been invited to attend the 'Women in Science' event on Tuesday the 8th March in Cardiff Bay. The event will mark International Women’s Day and attended by various VIPs including the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport. Have a wonderful time, Caitlin. Careers News The Careers department would like to alert you to National Careers Week which takes place next week. Our calendar of events covers the whole school year and involves all year groups. Watch out next week as we run an electronic alert week. We will be sending out the latest guidance and focus points as they come in to us live from RBS who sponsor this week. Remember to look at our Firefly pages which are packed with information for all stages of career planning. Year 11 Work Experience forms have been coming in to be checked. Please note that they are now overdue and that the deadline was Tuesday 1st March. Years 10 and 11 have enjoyed a visit from Karen Kimura this week as part of their CareerStart programme. Look out for more information in next week’s update. Inspiring Futures We are fortunate to have excellent career support from an organisation called “Inspiring Futures”. Inspiring Futures is carrying a survey about the future career preferences of students from Year 8 to Year 13 which will take your daughter or son 15 minutes to answer. They will be entered to win an iPad Air and a £50 Amazon Voucher. Click here to see the survey. RAF Course for Year 10 Students The RAF is running a free residential course for Year 10 students during the summer half term. Please note that this is an event that students must arrange themselves. Spring Concert Tickets for our Spring Concert on Thursday 17th March at 6pm will be available to buy from Monday 7th March. Please go to the main office in the Senior School and ask for Hannah Roberts to buy your tickets, which cost £5. Alternatively your daughter or son can buy them from the Marketing office. Languages Evening We are pleased to announce that there will be a Languages Evening to showcase the winning Eisteddfod performances on 15th March at 4.30pm for students in Year 7-9. Further details will follow next week. Vintage Tea in aid of Breast Cancer Care Sold Out We are delighted that the Vintage Tea in aid of Breast Cancer Care on Tuesday 8th March to commemorate International Women’s Day has sold out! Please resist the temptation to simply turn up on the day as we will not be able to accommodate you. We look forward to welcoming over 100 guests to celebrate the empowerment of women as well as raise funds for a cause that touches so many. Fathers’ Lunch All Howell’s dads or male carers are cordially invited to the Howell’s Fathers’ Lunch on Friday 29th April at 12pm for 12.30pm at the Cardiff County Club. Tickets cost £35 each for a 3 course lunch plus wine. The speaker at the lunch will be Professor Dylan Jones Evans, a new Howell’s father. Dylan is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Bristol Business School and is a business journalist with the Western Mail. To book tickets please email Mr Andy Howell at [email protected]. Save The Date — Cheese and Wine Evening—Friday 6th May Think you can tell a Semillon from a Sauvignon Blanc and Cornish Yarg from Cave Matured Cheddar? Two Hywelians Return to Howell’s (HRH) to show us how it's done. Nicola Allison, from the Chateau de Seuil vineyard in Bordeaux, and Katherine Spencer, of The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company, will return to Howell's on Friday 6th May to host a Cheese and Wine Evening. Tickets will be available at the beginning of next term. Howell’s Crescent Entrance We are pleased to let you know that the Howell’s Crescent entrance will reopen on Monday 11th April.
