  • Scaramouche and the Commedia Dell'arte
Scaramouche Sibelius’s horror story Eija Kurki © Finnish National Opera and Ballet archives / Tenhovaara Scaramouche. Ballet in 3 scenes; libr. Paul [!] Knudsen; mus. Sibelius; ch. Emilie Walbom. Prod. 12 May 1922, Royal Dan. B., CopenhaGen. The b. tells of a demonic fiddler who seduces an aristocratic lady; afterwards she sees no alternative to killinG him, but she is so haunted by his melody that she dances herself to death. Sibelius composed this, his only b. score, in 1913. Later versions by Lemanis in Riga (1936), R. HiGhtower for de Cuevas B. (1951), and Irja Koskkinen [!] in Helsinki (1955). This is the description of Sibelius’s Scaramouche, Op. 71, in The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Ballet. Initially, however, Sibelius’s Scaramouche was not a ballet but a pantomime. It was completed in 1913, to a Danish text of the same name by Poul Knudsen, with the subtitle ‘Tragic Pantomime’. The title of the work refers to Italian theatre, to the commedia dell’arte Scaramuccia character. Although the title of the work is Scaramouche, its main character is the female dancing role Blondelaine. After Scaramouche was completed, it was then more or less forgotten until it was published five years later, whereupon plans for a performance were constantly being made until it was eventually premièred in 1922. Performances of Scaramouche have 1 attracted little attention, and also Sibelius’s music has remained unknown. It did not become more widely known until the 1990s, when the first full-length recording of this remarkable composition – lasting more than an hour – appeared. Previous research There is very little previous research on Sibelius’s Scaramouche.

At that time, the young, male student was a ubiquitous character in Finnish culture and literature and students were the protagonists of many novels, particularly at the end of the century. But as a literary motif, they had already appeared in the early part of the century (Lappalainen 1999b, 51). In this article, I analyze the image of the student as a representation of masculinity. The image of the student has attracted the attention of literary scholars interested in its representation in different literary trends: how it metamorphosed from an idealized figure in national romanticism in the early and mid-nineteenth century to a decadent philanderer in realist literature in the late nineteenth century (Molarius 1996, 2000, xvi– ii; also Lyytikäinen 1997).

Suomalaisuuden lähteillä p Tuusulanjärven taiteilijayhteisö PB 2 Tuusulanjärvi-ilmiö Tuusulanjärvi on vetänyt taiteilijoita puoleensa jo toista sataa vuotta. Näi- den taiteilijoiden jalanjäljet on tallennettu tähän vihkoon kaikkien seurattaviksi. Polku johdattaa sinut sadan vuoden taakse paikkoihin, joissa moni meille itsestään selvä sävel tai kuva on syntynyt. Samalla se kertoo tarinoita niistä, jotka kulkivat heidän jäljessään muodostaen katkeamatto- man perinteen aina näihin päiviin asti. Etukansi: Eero Järnefelt, Kukkivaa kesää, 1918, öljy. 78.03 «Ma chère petite Aïno». The Role of a Paris Conservatoire Singing Professor as Architect of an Opera Singer’s Career, as Seen through Letters of Edmond Duvernoy and Aïno Ackté Helena Tyrväinen (Helsinki) «Моя милая Айно».

  • Finland's Nature, Arts and Independence
Finland’s Nature, Arts and Independence Finns have relied on the nature to keep them warm, nourished and clothed throughout the ancient history. The land has provided clean water, crops, fish and game, and materials for transportation and housing. The harsh climate has required survival skills and sisu, but it has also provided natural beauty that has created inspiration and works of art in a number of disciplines. Late 1800’s brought forward the Finnish identity in language, music, poetry, architecture and design. It continued to strengthen and was presented in various fields of life. The Finnish proverb ‘We are not Swedish, we will not become Russian, so let’s be Finnish’ describes well the commitment of the people. Kalevala, Elias Lönnrot’s work of epic poetry of Karelian and Finnish folklore and mythology brings the early poems, songs, music and pictorial art together. The life was straightforward and simple, because it was efficient and it helped the people survive in the challenging environment. Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland in 1809 after the Swedish armies minus the Finnish solders had retreated across the Ahvenanmeri (Åland Sea) and Tornionjoki (Tornio River) and Russia became the new ruler. The idea of independence had started to develop toward the end of the period when Finland was part of the Swedish Empire, but got to a faster pace under the rule of the Russian Tsars, or rather their governor generals. In the mid-1800’s the Central European romanticism reached Finland and the German composer Fredrik Pacius, the Father of Finnish music, came with it, liked Finland and stayed.

Web site: www.claireaho.com CLAIRE AHO 1 (20 ) Claire Aho : Studio Works, The Photographers´ Gallery in London, 19 April – 21 July, 2013 Claire Aho's career is defined by her pioneering editorial photography and innovative colour techniques. In the early 1950s, at a highpoint in Finnish design culture, Aho (b. 1925, Finland) established a Helsinki-based photography studio under her own name. Her prolific output spanned advertising, editorial, reportage and fashion for a range of commercial applications. She dealt with all aspects of the creative process, from casting models, set-making, styling and lighting to developing and printing her own images. Aho’s relationship to the studio space is taken as the starting point for this exhibition, and is used as a prism through which to understand the relationship with her subjects, and – in particular – her dialogue with form, colour and pattern. Evidence of the mechanics of the image making process, such as colour charts, studio lights and backdrops are often included within the frame of the exhibited images. The exhibition will also include a display of original materials where the images have been cropped and combined with graphics for magazine covers, advertising and packaging.
