Tea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 03-11-09 12:04 Tea From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tea is the agricultural product of the leaves, leaf buds, and internodes of the Camellia sinensis plant, prepared and cured by various methods. "Tea" also refers to the aromatic beverage prepared from the cured leaves by combination with hot or boiling water,[1] and is the common name for the Camellia sinensis plant itself. After water, tea is the most widely-consumed beverage in the world.[2] It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent flavour which many enjoy.[3] The four types of tea most commonly found on the market are black tea, oolong tea, green tea and white tea,[4] all of which can be made from the same bushes, processed differently, and in the case of fine white tea grown differently. XYZ dish method developed by us was a simple and fast method for antioxidative activity of tea in normal drinking conditions. Thirty kinds of commercial tea products and 54 kinds of tea materials were examined. Tea products containing green tea leaves showed much stronger activities than other teas. Activities by XYZ dish method" exhibited a high correlation between catechin by HPLC and DPPH radical scavenging activities. These results suggest that XYZ dish method was reliable for antioxidative evaluation of various tea products in normal drinking conditions. Leaf, rhizome, grain and fruits ofherbs and medicinal plants were processed into tea products in small regional factory. Due to this health-benefit effect should be evaluated. A number of researchers have reported on the free radical generation in our body and its mediation to several diseases and cancer, for example, diabetes melitalis, arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular heart diseases. Antioxidative activity is considered to be an important quality factor of food and tea for the prevention of free radical mediated diseases. -

Ginzell and Lawrence M. ~anksl~~ Accepted December 4,2002 We tested the hypothesis that contact phermones mediate mate recognition for four species of longhorned beetles, Neoclytus mucronatus mucronatus (E),Megacyllene caryae (Gahan), Megacyllene robiniae (Forster), and Plec- trodera scalator (E).All tested males of all four species attempted to mate with females only after contacting them with their antennae. From 66.7 to 80% of tested males attempted to mate with hexane-extracted dead females treated with 0.1-1.0 female eq~livalentsof conspecific female extracts, confirming that nonpolar compounds on the cuticle of females are essential for mate recogni- tion in all four species. These findings are further evidence of the critical role of contact pheromones in mating systems of longhorned beetles. INTRODUCTION The insect cuticle is rendered waterproof by a lipid layer that is a complex mixture of long-chain fatty acids, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, and hy- drocarbons (Gibbs, 1998). Some hydrocarbon constituents serve as contact pheromones in many types of insects (Blomquist et al., 1996). In order to answer the following three questions “ whether the current tea culture phenomena can be called “tradition” or not; what are the changes in tea cultural tradition and what are the new features of the current trend of tea culture; what are the endogenous and exogenous factors which influenced the change in the tea drinking tradition”, I did literature research from ancient tea classics and historical documents to summarize the development history of Chinese tea culture, and used two month to do fieldwork on teahouses in Xi’an so that I could have a clear understanding on the current trend of tea culture. It is found that the current tea culture is inherited from tradition and changed with social development. Tea drinking traditions have become more and more popular with diverse forms. -

(Lamiaceae) Growing in Mount Ida- Turkey Züleyha Özer1* 1 University of Balıkesir, Altınoluk Vocational School, Programme of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, 10870 Balıkesir, TURKEY Abstract: The chemical composition of leaf and flower essential oils of Origanum onites L. were analyzed using Thermo Scientific TSQ GC-MS/MS. Also, antioxidant activities of the leaf and flower essential oils were investigated by using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity and β- carotene linoleic acid assays. BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene) were used as standards. The essential oil yields of O. onites were 1.75% for leaves and 4.25% for flowers. A total of twenty-three compounds representing 99.9% of leaf oil and twenty-four compounds constituted 99.6% of the flower oil were determined. Oxygenated monoterpenes were detected at a high percentage (69.2%) in leaf essential oil, and carvacrol (64.9%) was determined as the main compound. Also, flower essential oil was dominated by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (73.5%), and α-cubebene (36.4%) was determined as a primary compound. For leaf oil, a high antioxidant capacity was determined, primarily due to carvacrol and p-cymene. Keywords: Origanum onites, essential oil, carvacrol, α-cubebene, antioxidant activity. Abstract: Ruta L. is a typical genus of the citrus family, Rutaceae Juss. and comprises ca. 40 different species, mainly distributed in the Mediterranean region. Ruta species have long been used in traditional medicines as an abortifacient and emmenagogue and for the treatment of lung diseases and microbial infections. The genus Ruta is rich in essential oils, which predominantly contain aliphatic ketones, e.g., 2-undecanone and 2-nonanone, but lack any significant amounts of terpenes. Three Ruta species, Ruta chalepensis L., Ruta graveolens L., and Ruta montana L., have been extensively studied for the composition of their essential oils and several bioactivities, revealing their potential medicinal and agrochemical applications. -
