I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of the Coventry United players, staff and fans. I have been relatively pleased with the start to the season, we were obviously disappointed to lose the first game at home but understood as it was the first game of the season there would be teething problems and the team will take time to get to the levels we all want. As I said after the game there were lots of positives to take and we had to take them into the Blackburn game and I was really pleased to see the players try to do that and whilst the performance had some areas where we clearly need to improve, getting the three points away from home on a tough day was really pleasing. The international break has given us time to work on the things we need to from the first two games and also work to get back fit the players that have missed the start of the season. Unfortunately we have had a big selection of our squad unavailable but we’re all excited to see where this group can go once everyone is back and firing. Today’s opponents had a great season last year and will look to continue that winning mentality as that adapt to the Championship. They had a good start with a solid draw v Crystal Palace and I’m expecting a tough game today as always. Thank you for your support on the opening day and we hope that crowds will continue to grown in the women’s game and importantly at the Hive. They have had a good start to the season and signed some good players so we will not be underestimating them today. Secondly I’d like to welcome back all our fans to the hive where we’d like to carry on our good form and get a second consecutive win for you all. In our last game we got all three points away to Blackburn. It was a very good result in very hot conditions. We managed to score early from a very good finish from Keets who completely deserves that goal, the energy and positivity she brings to the squad is fantastic and we are all happy she managed to be our match winner. The team showed great character to hold on to the result and it’s a great game to build from. As a team we are happy with the result but we know we have to keep improving to progress. We have analysed our previous performances closely and worked on our weaknesses in training. So we hope to not only get three points today but we also would like to put on a good performance too. The importance of having fans is vital and we’re hoping for a big noisy crowd today. When your playing at home, having that support gives you an advantage over your opponents. As a team we are very grateful to everyone that watched us in our first game of the season and we hope to see you all and more today. Alex CLUB GROUND BUTTS PARK ARENA Nickname CAPACITY 4,000 CHAIRMAN Founded PETER REYNOLDS HEAD COACH JAY BRADFORD SUMMARY: Coventry United Ladies are a newly promoted side to the FAWC, having finished first in last season’s FA Women’s National League South. Originally founded in 1991 as Coventry City Ladies, the club merged with Coventry United (a local non-league club) in July 2015, and have come along in leaps and bounds since. With their first season in the FA Women’s Championship, the club will be looking to cement themselves as an established side in the Championship, and have played some fantastic football of late, with preseason games against Sheffield FC Women and Liverpool Women’s FC. UNITED WE’VE MET BEFORE: The Bees have never faced Coventry United Ladies, meaning the prospect of our first meet in September could go either way. Of course, we will be hopeful of securing the three points both times round when facing the Red & Green, with our first game taking place at The Hive. Confidence will be running high for the Bees, and know that anything less than a win will be a disappointing result. Despite the unknown surrounding our fixtures against Coventry, we are sure that both games will be a great occasion for both clubs, and The Bees welcome Coventry United Ladies to the FAWC and wish them all the best for the upcoming season. COVENTRY What’s the Josh Palmer Buzz? It has been announced this week that the England Womens national team will face their Brazil counterparts next month. The Lionesses will play their first home game since returning from the World Cup in France over the summer, where they finished fourth. The game, taking place on October 5th at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, will be the national teams third since the summers tournament, having drawn with Belgium in Louven last month, before having lost to an 89th minute winner against Norway in Bergen on Tuesday. They also play Germany at Wembley in November. Just two months after featuring at their first ever world cup, Jamaica Women have to train or play a match after a dispute over their payment. A social media post by player Khadija Shaw said that the strike was “about more than just money”. In response, the Jamaican Football Federation has said that its’ players have been paid half of the money they were owed, and that the remainder of the money will be given to them by the end of the month. Shaw continued: “We are in a position where we are literally fighting just to get paid by legal agreements. [This is] about change, change in the way women football is viewed, especially in Jamaica”. The WSL has this week secured its’ first ever international broadcasting deal. Two companies, NENT, a Scandinavian broadcaster, and Sky Mexico have agreed a reported six figure fee for the deal, which is expected to last three years. This means that the women’s top flight will be available to watch in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and various other countries in Central America. Chioma Ubogagu, the England winger, has recently left American side Orlando Pride. After leaving the NWSL side, currently manager by former Birmingham City Women manager Marc Skinner, she has signed for Spanish side CD Tacon. Having been born in London to Nigerian parents, 26 year old Ubogagu moved to Texas when she was 3 years old, and played for a few lower level American sides before signing for Arsenal. She returned to America after just one season, playing for Houston Dash before transferring to Pride. After a loan at Australian side Brisbane Roar last season, she signs for Tacon. Tacon, who play in Spain’s top division, are based just 7 miles from giants Real Madrid. Over the summer, Real brought the club to become their womens club, but they will keep their name for this season, before changing next summer. The USA national team and French club side Olympique Lyonnais have dominated the FIFA FIFPRO’s Women World 11. Women’s World 11 is a vote organised by FIFPRO since 2015, and this is the fourth edition. Over 3,500 top women’s players worldwide pick a team of who they think are the best players in the world, choosing one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards, based on their performances last season. The World 11 is made up of the 11 of those players who received the most votes in their positions. Of the 55 on the final shortlist, fourteen play for the US national team, whilst thirteen are contracted to Lyon. England manager Phil Neville has this week dismissed the rumours that he is going to join the USA national team as their manager. Despite the US side being the world champions, he has insisted that he is focussed on winning the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics with the Lionesses.
