This was the first Our Students 3 production after the original Broadway cast, and I had several friends in the show, which was cast locally. One of the cast members was James Monroe Checking In 4 Iglehart (CSUEB Graduate) who had been in previous musicals I had directed in San Jose. James has since gone on to win the Tony Award as the Genie in Disney’s Broadway production of "Aladdin." James was playing 'Comfort Guest Artists 5 Counselor' Mitch Mahoney in "Spelling Bee," and his performance was so perfect that the producers decided to model every subsequent 'Mitch' on James’ performance. Another friend in the show was Aaron Albano, who had Featured Faculty 7 started out as one of the teenagers in my production of The Music Man that I directed in San Jose, and has since gone on to appear on Broadway in The Wiz, Newsies, and currently in Allegiance. The San Francisco company of Information 9 "Spelling Bee" was so successful, that the producers ultimately used those actors to replace the Broadway company once the original actors were ready to leave the show. One of those original actors, Sarah Salzburg ‒ the original “Schwarzy” in ‘Spelling Bee - was the daughter of a good friend of mine.

Then & Now: The Relevance of Tennessee Williams for the 21st- Century Actress Marcie Danae Bealer Honors Thesis Ouachita Baptist University Spring 2009 Bealer 2 Finding a place to begin, discussing the role Tennessee Williams has played in the American Theatre is a daunting task. As a playwright Williams has "sustained dramatic power," which allow him to continue to be a large part of American Theatre, from small theatre groups to actor's workshops across the country. Williams holds a central location in the history of American Theatre (Roudane 1). Williams's impact is evidenced in that "there is no actress on earth who will not testify that Williams created the best women characters in the modem theatre" (Benedict, par 1). According to Gore Vidal, "it is widely believed that since Tennessee Williams liked to have sex with men (true), he hated women (untrue); as a result his women characters are thought to be malicious creatures, designed to subvert and destroy godly straightness" (Benedict, par.

The play deals with a family, who as part of a daily enforced ritual, re-enact a farce, written and directed by Dinny, the patriarch, a story which accounts for their exile in London, and away from their family home in Cork. Their enactment is an attempt to create a false memory, for their performance is very much at odds with the real events which provoked their exile. LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER October 12, 2006, 8:00 p.m. on PBS Lincoln Center's American Songbook presents Audra McDonald & Friends "A supremely gifted lyric soprano and actress." Those are the words of Stephen Holden writing in The New York Times about "Build a Bridge," the latest CD recording by Audra McDonald. At New York's Lincoln Center one of the most admired offerings is the series called "The American Songbook." On Thursday, October 12 Audra McDonald and The American Songbook will come together on the stage of the Allen Room at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall for an evening called "Audra McDonald and Friends." Front and center will be songs by American singers/songwriters. The cameras and microphones of Live From Lincoln Center will be on hand to bring the event directly into your homes. This may be a good time to emphasize the word "live" in our title: I have occasionally been asked when the programs of Live From Lincoln Center are taped. Except for last May's program, which consisted of a kaleidoscopic survey of highlights from our thirty seasons of programs, Live From Lincoln Center is absolutely LIVE at the moment of transmission (though some stations along the PBS Network chose to schedule the programs on a tape-delayed basis). Audra McDonald, raised in Fresno, California was born into a musical family. As a youngster she appeared in many local and regional theatrical productions, perhaps most notably as Aldonza in "Man of La Mancha." Coming to New York she enrolled at Lincoln Center's Juilliard School, and even as an undergraduate she won her first major role on Broadway as a replacement Ayah in "Secret Garden." The year after her 1993 graduation from Juilliard she was cast as Carrie Pepperidge in Nicholas Hytner's production of "Carousel." Never before had an African-American woman played the role, and her performance won for her her first Tony Award.

MASTER & STUDENT: (left to right) Sierra Boggess & Tyne Daly in revival of Master Class on Broadway. Photo: Joan Marcus Theater Review Master Class: Tyne Daly's gutsy take on Maria Callas MASTER CLASS Book by Terrence McNally Directed by Stephen Wadsworth Through August 21, 2011 Manhattan Theatre Club at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre 261 West 47th Street, (212-239-6200) www.ManhattanTheatreClub.com By David NouNou Revivals are a great way of re-examining a theatrical piece and its durability, especially if the work is an award-winning play. I must admit that I am a sucker for revisiting seldom-revived plays, and Terrence McNally’s Master Class is no exception. It was the 1996 Tony-winning drama for Best Play, Best Actress, Zoe Caldwell, and Best Featured Actress, Audra McDonald. I know back then I was really rooting for it to win Best Play, and there was no contest in the Best Actress category. No one had a chance running against the legendary Ms. Caldwell, La Divina of the theatrical world. Seeing what Master Class was up against that year, I can understand the victory in 1996. (The other Best Play nominees were weak and, in some cases, big, pretentious bores). However, if it would have opened earlier this year, and qualified for the 2011 Tonys, other than Tyne Daly as Maria Callas for Best Actress, what else would it have been up for? This is not to say that Master Class is not still enjoyable, entertaining, and enthralling. In this version, it seems less of a play and more of an extended monologue.

BY TONY TACCONE AND BENNETT S. COHEN, ADAPTED FROM THE NOVEL BY SINCLAIR LEWIS SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC BY PAUL JAMES PRENDERGAST DIRECTED BY LISA PETERSON DEAR FRIENDS, Four years ago, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, Berkeley Rep produced Tony Taccone and Bennett Cohen’s adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ frighteningly prescient novel. With a desire to see the story reach the widest possible audience, and celebrating the impulse that led the wpa in 1936 to share the original stage version of Lewis’ novel for free with 21 theatres across the country, Berkeley Rep offered the rights to Tony and Bennett’s adaptation to theatres, community centers, universities — anyone who wanted to put together their own production or reading. And now, in 2020, this story feels all the more vital, and the need to share it widely even more compelling. I am honored that more than 75 organizations from more than 20 states have partnered with us to share this production of It Can’t Happen Here for free with their audiences and communities. We are joined in this effort by long-time theatre colleagues, by universities from Howard in Wash- ington, DC to Saint Cloud State in Minnesota (near Lewis’ hometown), by libraries, community centers, and radio stations. I am deeply grateful to Tony and Bennett, director Lisa Peterson, sound designer Paul James Prendergast and his small but mighty team, and this extraordinary cast who have collaborated across miles and time zones, through wildfires and new technology, for their conviction that the- atre matters, that narrative helps us to see the world more clearly, and that together we have the capacity to effect change.
