Here, in photographs by Lynn Horner Keith, are highlights of the Shakespeare Guild’s 1998 Gielgud festivities. (1) During a prologue to the main event, NPR correspondent Susan Stamberg interviews the couple a New York Times profile dubbed “Mr. and Mrs. Broadway.” This engaging conversation took place against the backdrop of an Al Hirschfeld rendering of producer Robert Whitehead and his wife Zoe Caldwell, whom Mr. Whitehead had recently directed in a Tony-winning production of Terrence McNally’s Master Class. (2) Following the program, Susan and Louis Stamberg talk with Elaine Mead Murphy. (3) The following evening Sir Derek Jacobi, who had received his Gielgud Award the previous year, presents the 1998 Golden Quill to Ms. Caldwell. (4) A day later Ms. Caldwell addresses a live NPR audience during a lunch- eon gathering at the National Press Club. (5) Shifting back to the Folger ceremony, we see Ms. Caldwell as she revels in the accolades of gala presenters George Plimpton, Sir Derek Jacobi, host Robert MacNeil, pianist David Loud, and performer Audra McDonald. Mr. Loud and Ms. McDonald had been supporting members of the cast in Master Class, where Ms. McDonald earned the second of her record six Tony Awards. (6) Robert Whitehead and Zoe Caldwell bask in the company of three admirers: cartoonist and playwright Doug Marlette, publicist and Guild Advisory Council member Jan DuPlain, and Board member Barbara Hammerman. (7) Author George Plimpton enjoys a drink with NewsHour founders Jim Lehrer and Robert MacNeil. (8) The Guild’s Jan Denton and John Andrews compare notes with satirist Christopher Buckley. .
