GREATER CAPACITY AND ENHANCED FACILITIES ON BOARD THE REVAMPED FLAGSHIPS
“Our flagships Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona are our pride and joy, and now they’re even better than before,” says Grimaldi Lines Passenger Department Manager Francesca Marino, who explains that “with the improvements on board, especially in the food service area, this is as good as it gets when it comes to the luxury ferry category.” Can you explain in detail what this revamp involved? “The lengthening of the ships has greatly increased their overall capacity, thanks to the addition of 3 lounges with club seating and 20 sea view staterooms plus extensions to the garages, which can now accommodate more goods and private vehicles. The main innovation, though, is a new and very stylish dining area, in addition to the existing self-service buffet seating 360, the à la carte restaurant with a seating capacity of over 200 and the fast-food eatery outside in the pool area.” What exactly is this new restaurant like? “We call it a family self-service restaurant and the design is based on an American concept, with quick and simple meals suitable for people of all ages. The new facility can seat up to 280 and will serve very reasonably priced pizza, burgers and baguettes with lots of toppings and fillings.” Will the greater passenger capacity and comfort of these vessels allow you to stage bigger and better events? “Our flagships are already the venues for theme events all year round. The lengthening and associated upgrading will certainly make both vessels even more appealing. It’s not long now till the 10th edition of our DanceFitCruise (from 13 to 16 July). Then, from 2 to 5 November we’ll be hosting the grand convention of the company Samarcanda, a leader in tourism and leisure organisation.”

Quello di Monteriggioni (diecimila gli abitanti dell’intero comprensorio) è un borgo tutto da visitare ed assaporare, dalla sua cinta muraria ai cammina- menti sulle mura del castello che offrono uno straor- dinario panorama sulla collina ricca di vigneti ed olivi verso il Chianti e la Valdelsa; dalle due porte, da quella rivolta verso Roma alla base di una torre con un ampio arco a sesto acuto a quella di ponente che guarda a Firenze, costituita da un semplice arco semicircolare posto a lato di una torre. Sulla piazza centrale del borgo si affaccia la chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta risalente al XIII secolo che con- serva ancora le caratteristiche medioevali. Al suo interno, ristrutturato in epoca moderna, si possono ammirare un dipinto del XVII secolo con la Madonna del Rosario del Vanni ed una campana risalente al 1299. E, proprio intorno a questa piccola chiesetta si concentra la vita del borgo, specie dei quaranta cittadini che continuano ad abitare tra le mura. Da visitare il Museo delle armature e le molte mostre che si susseguono durante tutto l’anno. In Piazza Roma, subito al di là della porta principale, bar e ristoranti offrono piatti tipici quali il cinghiale, le pappardelle ed i salumi il tutto innaffiato dagli straordinari vini della zona. Monteriggioni itself has few very residents (though there are around 10,000 in the surrounding area) but it’s well worth a visit. You can walk along the outer walls on a specially erected walkway affording superb views of the Tuscan countryside with rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves in the direction of Chianti and the Valdelsa. You can also pass through the two gates: one is in the direction of Rome at the base of a tower with a large pointed arch while the other to the west is towards Florence, with a simple semicircular arch built to one side of a tower. In the main square is the well-preserved 13th cen- tury church of Santa Maria Assunta. Its interior was renovated in modern times and features a 17th century painting of the Madonna del Rosario by Lippo Vanni. There’s also a bell dating back to 1299. This little church is very much the centre of town for Monteriggioni’s 40 residents. Another attrac- tion is the armour museum and the many exhibi- tions held throughout the year. In Piazza Roma, just after you come through the main gate, there are bars and restaurants serving typical dishes such
