Naseljenost, Korištenje I Zaštita Voda Sana River Drainage Area – Population, Use and Water Protection PORIJEČJE SANE – NASELJENOST, KORIŠTENJE I ZAŠTITA VODA SANA RIVER DRAINAGE AREA – POPULATION, USE AND WATER PROTECTION EMIR TEMIMOVIĆ Profesor geografije, Čurčići 6, 79280 Ključ, Bosna i Hercegovina UDK 504(282 Sana) Primljeno / Received: 2007-02-02 Izvorni znanstveni članak Original scientific paper U članku se razmatra naseljenost te korištenje i zaštita voda poriječja Sane u sjeverozapadnom dijelu Bosne i Hercegovine. Geografske i hidrogeografske karakteristike značajno su se odrazile na naseljenost istraživanog područja. Politika održivog razvoja pretpostavlja da je održivo upravljanje vodama integralni dio planiranja prostora. To svakako obuhvaća korištenje i zaštitu voda u poriječju. Zaključno, članak obuhvaća autorov prijedlog zaštićenih spomenika prirode i zaštićenih pejsaža-krajolika u istraživanom području. Ključne riječi: poriječje Sane, naseljenost poriječja, korištenje i zaštita voda, Bosna i Hercegovina The paper discusses population, water use and protection in Sana River drainage area, situated in the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Geographic and hydrogeographic features have a strong influence on the population of this area. Sustainable development policy presumes that sustainable water management is an integral part of spatial planning. That certainly encompasses water use and protection in the drainage area. Finally, the author expresses his opinion concerning the protected natural monuments and landscapes in the investigated area. Thus, in the examined area the most representative morphostructural relief members include: central mountain massifs, karst poljes and plateaus in the karst, pediments, foothills and alluvium, which are further divided into smaller relief subcategories. Defined relief structures are associated with specific landscape units in the basin drainage area. As a separate unit, complex composite valley of the river Sana is distinguished. Morphostructural types of relief, its areal distribution in the basin drainage of the river Sana and correspondence with tectonic units of Bosnia and Herzegovina are subject of reasrch in this article. Key words: Sana drainage basin, morphostructural regionalization, types of relief INTRODUCTION Morphostructural regionalization and determining the basic relief of Sana drainage basin, contribute typological regionalisation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Morphostructural regionalization relies on tectonic reginalisation, by which Sana’s drainage basin is situated in middle Dinarids, which are made of: Paleozoic clastics, mezozic carbonates, jurassic- creataceous flysh and neogene molasses. Their formation is influenced by pre-orogenic and oro-tectonic processes, which alternated from tertiary. After Alps orogenic phase, Sana drainage basin with other complexes of territories in northern Bosnian, was tectonically modified by young-styrian tectonic phase in which Pre- Tetis has penetrated until Uzlomac and Kozara.

Five subterranean gastropod species new to science had been recorded within the collected material. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the hydrological, physico-chemical and environmental flow-related processes occurring in freshwater ecosystems, such as rivers, streams and all other sorts of wetland habitats, as well as the implications on aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats induced by anthropogenic activities, is a crucial precondition. Fundamental processes that shape the river and its surroundings are hydro-morphological processes, ensuring the longitudinal connectivity along the river from the source to the mouth, as well as lateral connectivity of the river with its floodplain. Hydromorphology is the sum of physical characteristics of riverine structures (e.g. river bed, river banks, connection between the river and other landscape elements) that shape the habitat configuration of the ecosystem. In the upper parts of the river, higher slopes, turbulence and oxygenation are the main factors influencing the biocenosis. In the middle river section low slope, decreasing water velocity and consequent meandering of the river course provide different sets of environmental conditions for the development of plant and animal communities that are adapted to such conditions.

And up to a rather recent point in time this was not a misleading idea. Unfortunately, this has been the reality in the Balkans. If one tries to imagine the map of the European Union in 2007 something would come in front of the eyes. An area in the Balkan Peninsula washed by the Adriatic Sea and circulated by Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovenia, all of them EU Member States. The Union has already coined a brand new name for this area, the “Western Balkans”. The principal aim of this work is to introduce the reader to this region. It is a rich mixture of civilisations and ethnic groups, with affiliations to Christianity, both Orthodox and Catholic, and Islam and cultural influences ranging from Roman, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian to Greek and Italian. Who are the Albanians, the Croats, the Serbs, the Macedonians, the Montenegrins and the Bosniaks, and how many of them live in the Western Balkans? Which is their origin and what languages do they speak? This work tries to answer all these questions.
