Clovis Du Berlais, one of two sons of King’s Theatre at stud, was the new boy with star appeal at yesterday’s Yorton Farm Stud stallion parade, writes Carl Evans. Yet once-a-year visitors to the Futter family’s home near Welshpool on the Powys/Shropshire border enjoy more than just a cluster of quality jumping stallions. There is always an impressive selection of young stock to admire, while the ongoing restoration and conversion of a Victorian model farm into a bespoke stud is a treat for anyone who recognises the aesthetic appeal of bricks, slate roofs and oak beams, and who soaks up architectural heritage in a bucolic location.

Blue Bresil, sire of Stakes winners such as dual Gr.2 winner Le Prezien, who will soon be starting his second season at Yorton Farm. (Ce)

Before taking the microphone, Dave Futter said: “We have a lot to be excited about. In Britain we have top trainers, the best jockeys and fantastic owners, and everyone wants to win at a British racecourse – we just need to stick together.”

New boy Clovis Du Berlais shown by Lester Futter. (Ce)

The property was an inexpensive purchase for racehorse owners James and Jean Potter on condition they restored it in keeping with its history – vigilant council planning officers are monitoring the project, but they can have no qualms on the workmanship. Some 40 extra stables, a loose school and a base for an in-house vet have been created in the past twelve months alone. Clovis Du Berlais has joined six other Yorton Farm Stud stallions for the 2017 covering season, as Dave and Teresa Futter, their eldest son Lester and new stud manager Matt Darling maintain their drive to promote not only a fine roster of sires, but also The Gr.1 Classic winner Gentlewave (Monsun). Matt Darling, who has recently been appointed Stud Manager. (Ce)

Reflecting on UK-based stallions, he said: “Kayf Tara has shown what can be done when a sire is supported by the best mares, so we must keep looking to the future and not just doing the same old thing. We must look at the best of other countries and learn from them. “Today is not just about Yorton Farm Stud, although, of course, we want to show our stallions. It is also about getting breeders together and looking at other areas of our work. More and more owners and agents are visiting to see our young stock, because we have bought more than 30 horses out of France and Ireland and we have broken in and ridden away more than 50 two-year-olds. “It’s about progressing a business; ten years ago we sold four-year- olds as stores, but why shouldn’t we sell them as two-year-olds? With good Flat horses being sold abroad or staying on the all-weather, there is a niche for producing juvenile hurdlers.” Pether’s Moon (Dylan Thomas), winner of the Gr.1 TBA board member Robert Waley-Cohen gave an audience of Coronation Cup and three other Pattern races, several hundred a report on the improved opportunities for fillies whose first foals will arrive next spring. He is now owned by Yorton Farm Stud, but I am delighted the French have shown their faith and kept breeding rights in him.” Also on parade yesterday was Blue Bresil, who is about to enter his second season at the stud, along with Universal, Gentlewave, Pether’s Moon and Norse Dancer. Sulamani, sire of this year’s Grand National winner Rule The World, was off games with a blood infection, but was shown to admirers in a separate yard.
