There was a time when the Champion Hurdle regularly fell to sons of
Everything suggested Last Instalment was destined to develop into a major force when he won the Dr PJ Moriarty Novice Chase at Leopardstown in February 2012. In winning his second consecutive Gr1 race, he improved his record over fences to four wins from as many starts, having earlier won a point-to-point, a bumper and his first two starts over hurdles. However, the son of Anshan was described by his owner Michael O’Leary as having two glass legs, and two separate tendon injuries were to keep him off the course for nearly two years. He showed he retained his ability – and his boldness – judging by his commanding victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup but was retired after a spill in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Last Instalment was very well suited by three miles. His sire Anshan, who died in 2005, possessed more speed than stamina, notably winning the Gr3 Supreme Stakes over seven furlongs. Also third in the 2,000 Guineas, Anshan later became a dual stakes winner over nine furlongs in the US. However, three miles was also within the compass of Anshan’s best daughter Asian Maze, winner of the Champion Stayers’ Hurdle at Punchestown. Other good jumping winners by Anshan include Quantitativeeasing, Powerstation and Il Duce. Last Instalment’s dam Final Instalment is an unraced daughter of the rather luckless Insan. A winner of the Gr2 Beresford Stakes at two, Insan was caught on the line by Kahyasi in the Irish Derby after his rider lost his whip. Insan retired to stud in Yorkshire but problems with a stifle initially compromised his effectiveness and he was moved to Germany in 1991. His next move was to Garryrichard Stud in Ireland and Insan went on to sire such as Davenport Milenium, Ballycassidy and Boychuk. Last Instalment’s second dam
Although he found one too good for him in each of his races over hurdles in France, Vautour has proved a different proposition since his arrival in Ireland. Three races there so far culminated in him making all to defeat The Tullow Tank in the Gr1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle, and he went on to run out a strikingly impressive winner of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Vautour is a member of the last crop sired by Robin Des Champs before this very successful French stallion moved to Ireland to stand at Glenview Stud in Fermoy. Several members of Robin des Champs’s earlier French crops have also excelled outside France, the best examples being Sir Des Champs, a winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown and Punchestown Gold Cup, Quevega, the outstanding mare who has won six Mares’ Hurdles at Cheltenham, and the Gr1 winners Un Atout and Sous Les Cieux. Robin Des Champs retired to stud in 2001, having raced only as a threeyear-old, when he won the first four of his five starts over hurdles. He covered 144 mares in his first year in Ireland in 2009, which means that he should soon be making an impact with his Irish progeny. He has been less busy in recent years, the 2013 Return of Mares crediting him with 71

stallions who made their name as sprinters, prime examples being Tangle’s Kirriemuir, Goldhill’s Comedy Of Errors, Milesian’s Lanzarote and Falcon’s Night Nurse. Consequently we shouldn’t be too surprised that Dark Angel, the Middle Park Stakes winner responsible for 2013’s Groupwinning sprinters Lethal Force and Heeraat is also responsible for Guitar Pete, one of the leading juvenile hurdlers. A €17,000 yearling, Guitar Pete could have been expected to show more speed than stamina. His dam Innishmore is an unraced daughter of Lear Fan, a top-class two-year-old and miler, while his second dam Inishdalla was a Green Desert mare who was fast enough to finish second in the Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Gr3 Phoenix Sprint. Coincidentally, both of the Group-winning Dark Angel sprinters mentioned earlier also have Green Desert in their pedigrees, Lethal Force’s dam being a granddaughter and Heeraat having a Green Desert dam. However, Guitar Pete raced at up to a mile and three-quarters during a winless Flat career and he has thrived at around two miles over hurdles. Having won a Gr2 event in December, the gelding was a decisive winner of the Gr1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown, improving his record over jumps to four wins and two seconds from six starts. So where has his stamina come from? The most likely sources are Roberto, sire of Lear Fan, and Guitar Pete’s fourth dam Arctic Wave. This very stoutly-bred daughter of the noted National Hunt stallion Arctic Slave was third in the Oaks and fourth in the Irish Oaks in 1970. This stamina emerged when Inishdalla visited In The Wings, to produce the useful stayer Hearthstead Wings, and Guitar Pete is himself a half-brother to King Of Aran, a 12-furlong winner by miler Val Royal.

With four sires’ championships to his credit, Presenting has been responsible for a string of Gr1 winners. Among them are such notable chasers as Denman, War Of Attrition, Weapon’s Amnesty, First Lieutenant, China Rock and the Grand National winner Ballabriggs. To this list was added the name of Ballycasey, who has built the impressive record of five wins from seven starts since he graduated from the point-to-point field (where he failed to win in three starts). He has won a bumper and two races over hurdles, but it is as a chaser that he looks most promising. A clear-cut winner of both his starts, he benefited from the last-fence fall of Carlingford Lough after leading throughout in the Gr1 Dr PJ Moriarty Novice Chase. Presenting has several very useful winners out of grand-daughters of Alleged, and Ballycasey’s dam Pink Mist is by Alleged’s successful son Montelimar, who sired the Grand National winners Hedgehunter and Monty’s Pass. Ballycasey’s female line has also produced a Grand National winner, his second dam Misty Joy being a half-sister to Royal Athlete. Add to this the fact that Misty Joy was a daughter of General Ironside and there is a good chance that Ballycasey will eventually prove suited by three miles. To date his only defeats have come at that distance, when favourite for a Gr1 novice hurdle at Punchestown and in the RSA Chase. thoroughbred mares in 2012 and 51 in 2013. The maximum distance tackled by Robin Des Champs was just under two and a quarter miles. However, his pedigree suggests that he would have stayed further and both Sir Des Champs and Quevega are suited by three miles. Vautour has so far raced only at up to two and a quarter miles, but he should stay further. His dam Gazelle De Mai must have given her owner great pleasure, as she totted up 20 victories (nine on the Flat, six over hurdles and five over fences). Her brother Lord Pasquini was also a prolific winner on the Flat and over

- Function Dream raced mainly at up
to 21 furlongs in the latter part of her career but she had earlier scored over as far as three miles. Maybe it is significant that Captain Chris’s most recent wins have come at around two and three quarter miles. In fact he has never won beyond that distance, though he clearly stays at least three miles. Captain Chris is by no means the only smart performer sired by King’s Theatre from daughters of Strong Gale. Another fine example is
151 ASCOT CHASE G1
2010/11 season with victories in the Gr1 Arkle Chase at Cheltenham and the Gr1 Ryanair Novice Chase at Punchestown, the son of King’s Theatre looked to have every chance of making it to the top in his new role. Although he continued to turn in some very good efforts, such as his narrow defeat by Long Run in the 2012 King George, he managed to win only one of his next ten starts. Hopefully his career has now turned another corner, as he has won both his starts in 2014, including an impressive win in the Gr1 Ascot Chase. Captain Chris is the second foal of Strong Gale’s admirable daughter Function Dream, whose career extended to 33 starts under rules, plus another two in point-to-points. Function Dream achieved three Gr2 successes over fences, including victories over Cenkos in the Victor Chandler Chase and over Flagship Uberalles in the Game Spirit Chase.
