  • 2020 Annual Report
2020 ANNUAL REPORT t would be fair to say that 2020 was by far the most challenging year in our history, but we persevered and continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of America’s at-risk and transitioning horses. I The work of the EQUUS Foundation begins each time the career of a horse comes to an end. For so many horse lovers and protectors, it’s hard to imagine that behind the glamour and affluence of equine sport, there are many horses that are abandoned, neglected, abused, and shipped across our borders for slaughter when their owners cannot, or no longer wish to, care for them. Viewed as commodities, too many horses in sport and in the workplace are regarded as disposable for profit when they no longer serve their owners’ purpose. For horses to remain an important part of American life and have a viable future, we need to embrace a fundamental shift in our attitude towards horses -- from the horse as a commodity to the horse as an athlete, companion, teacher, and healer. We dedicate our efforts to finding homes for at-risk horses and horses in transition, providing a safe haven for aged and infirm horses, and increasing opportunities for all people to engage and partner with horses in new and innovative ways. “For horses to remain an important part of Informed giving has never been more important. It is critical to ensure donor dollars are invested in programs that have the greatest impact - which is why only equine charities that have undergone a American life and have a viable future, we rigorous review and attain the EQUUS Foundation Guardian designation are eligible for financial support from the EQUUS Foundation.

FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2017 SCAT DADDY STARRING AT ROYAL ASCOT HORSES SAVING VETS, by Bill Oppenheim VETS SAVING HORSES After the first race at Royal Ascot Thursday, the five-furlong G2 Norfolk S. for 2-year-olds, Coolmore Ashford=s late great Scat Daddy had already chalked up three winners in the first 13 races--one a day, so far. Two were for 3-year-old fillies for trainer Wesley Ward: Lady Aurelia, whose second 5-furlong Royal Ascot win came in the G1 King=s Stand on Tuesday; followed by Wednesday=s last-race winner Con Te Partiro in the Listed Sandringham H. at a mile. In Thursday=s opener, Sioux Nation, trained by a certain Aidan O=Brien, became Scat Daddy=s fourth Royal Ascot 5-furlong 2-year-old Group winner, his fifth 2-year-old Group winner total, and marked the seventh win for Scat Daddy at Royal Ascot in five years. Five have been trained by Wesley Ward, two by O=Brien. In 2013, No Nay Never, from Scat Daddy=s third crop, won the Norfolk. Two years later, Acapulco won the G2 Queen Mary S. Last year Scat Daddy scored a 2-year-old double as Caravaggio won the G2 Coventry S. at six furlongs and Lady Aurelia became Scat Daddy=s second Sgt. Matt Ryba with retired Thoroughbred Crafty Star successive Queen Mary winner. SPORTS LAWYERS The 2020 Stud Season has been one of uncertainty but we are most fortunate that here in Newmarket we can call on the services of some of the world’s leading experts in their fields. We thank them all very much indeed for their advice. Especial thanks should be given to Tattersalls who have been able to conduct their sales in Newmarket despite severe restrictions. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all our lives and the Breeding season was no exception. Members have of course complied with all requirements of Government with additional stringent safeguards agreed by ourselves and the Thoroughbred Breeders Association so the breeding season was able to carry on almost unaffected.
