The Saskatoon SPCA is a registered charitable that provides care for over 4000 abandoned, homeless, neglected or abused animals annually from Saskatoon and area.

Our organization relies upon support from individual and corporate donors to ensure that we have the ability to provide care, , sustenance and vet care to lost and unwanted companion animals. We provide the public with adoption programs, pet safekeeping, pound services, lost and found, humane programs and volunteer programs. We also promote the enactment of laws to protect all animals from cruelty, neglect and abuse.

Job Description

The Executive Director (ED) at the SPCA is a senior leadership role that guides the organization through a variety of contexts including day-to-day operations, major activities and stakeholder engagement. It is the responsibility of the ED to ensure the organization maintains good fiscal health, meaningful strategic growth and continues to provide the utmost care to animals in need.

The individual in this position is responsible for balancing a variety of tasks that require several specific skills including public and government relations, financial , fundraising and staff management.

Job Duties Governance ● Actively participate in board and board committee meetings ● Provide guidance to the Board of Directors (BOD) in developing a vision and strategic plan ● Ensure the organization makes consistent progress towards annual goals and objectives established by the Board

Operational planning and management ● Develop an operational plan that aligns with the organization’s strategic direction, follows appropriate legislation and supports the welfare of animals under the organization’s care and within the community we serve ● Ensure that the organization meets the expectations of key stakeholders ● Support managerial staff to ensure effective day-to-day operation of the organization

Program planning and management ● Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services in accordance with strategic and operational plans ● Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in animal welfare and animal control fields.

Human resources planning and management ● Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery within the approved budget. ● Ensure staff are engaged, supported and contributing to the association's success

Financial planning and management ● Ensure the long-term financial health of the association through fundraising activities and writing ● Recommend an annual comprehensive budget to the Finance Committee for approval ● Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and within the authority delegated by the Board ● Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the fiscal health of the SPCA

Community relations/advocacy ● Ensure regular and appropriate communications with stakeholders ● Ensure positive relationships between the SPCA and the Veterinary community ● Handle media relations in a positive, professional, honest and mature manner. ● Serve as the SPCA's representative on external committees as required ● Liaise and collaborate with the City's Animal Services Coordinator and the Saskatoon Animal Control Agency on issues of mutual concern.

Risk management ● Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization and implement measures to control risks. ● Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage. ● Ensure that the Board and staff understand the terms, conditions and limitations of the insurance coverage.

The candidate will have….

● Minimum of 4-year Bachelors degree, with preference given to applicants with a Master’s level degree ● Minimum of 5-10 years experience working in non-profit or charitable , with preference given to applicants who have animal welfare and/or shelter experience ● Demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven writing skills necessary to fulfill the stakeholders and requirements. ● A proven track record in current business and/or non-profit management, as well as financial and asset management. ● Ability to provide leadership to achieve strategic long-term goals and the development of the organization as per the mandate set by the Board of Directors.
