The New Colossus
The New Colossus By Emma Lazarus (b. 1848- d. 1887) Background: ● Lazarus was a writer, poet, and translator who lived in New York City. ● She published her first book of poetry in 1866 and was a prolific writer, publishing dozens of poems and gaining fame for her translation of the Jewish German poet Heinrich Heine. ● She wrote The New Colossus in 1883. It would be auctioned off to raise money for the pedestal that the Statue of Liberty would stand on. ● It was engraved on the base of the pedestal in 1903, 16 years after Lazarus died. ● The poem is influenced by her work with Jewish immigrants. ● The poem personifies the statue, giving it human qualities. ● The rhyme scheme is abbaabba cdcdcd, a Petrarchan sonnet. Annotated Poem: Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, ← refers to the Colossus of Rhodes, a tribute to the Greek god Helios; it was a massive statue that stood at the harbor entrance to the city of Rhodes, Greece, during the rule of Ptolemy III (246-222 BCE). An artist’s rendition can be seen on the right. With conquering limbs astride from land to land; ← creates an image of Helios which will contrast to the Statue of Liberty herself; he is “conquering” and she will be welcoming, which we see in lines 4-13. Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand ← a contrast to the threat of “conquering limbs”; standing at “sea-washed, sunset gates” suggests that she is patiently waiting. The modern technical education digitalization implies an increase in the role of the information component in the training of students. At the same time there is a certain gap between the modern technologies training and the understanding of the fact that construction industry is the mixture of historically formed features and the current state of the industry. Nowadays construction industry is under continuous technical development. The main danger of an insufficient attention to the special aspects of the construction development is the neglect of the preservation of cultural background and architectural heritage, which can be observed in the modern life. The article deals with the issues of improving the effectiveness of the educational process of students by introducing into the educational training process not only modern methods of designing building structures, but also the issues of understanding the history of the emergence of individual construction objects. The construction object can't appear out of nothing. All constructive solution is preceded by a historical situation the situation of cultural and architectural heritage. However, there is no discernible connection between technical education and the humanities and social sciences. The authors use historical examples to justify the need for the use of elements of the humanities by a teacher of a higher technical educational institution with the introduction of the capabilities of modern digital information modeling technologies. -

When anything that challenged the authority of the state – concepts based on enlightenment, immigration, or socialism – were deemed to be a threat to the status quo and immediately eliminated by way of legal restrictions. Once the façade of the Old World was completely severed following the Great War, nations in Europe and throughout the West started to revive various nineteenth century laws in an attempt to suppress the outbreak of radicalism that preceded the 1919 revolutions. What this dissertation offers is an extended understanding of how nineteenth century government policies toward radicalism fostered an environment of increased national security during Germany’s 1919 Spartacist Uprising and the 1919/1920 Palmer Raids in the United States. Using the French Revolution as a starting point, this study allows the reader the opportunity to put events like the 1848 revolutions, the rise of the First and Second Internationals, political fallouts, nineteenth century imperialism, nativism, Social Darwinism, and movements for self-government into a broader historical context. -

RUSNAK* The public lands of the United States have always provided the arena in which we Americans have struggled to fulfill our dreams. Even today dreams of wealth, adventure, and escape are still being acted out on these far flung lands. These lands and the dreams-fulfilled and unfulfilled-which they foster are a part of our national destiny. They belong to all Americans. 1 I. INTRODUCTION For some Americans, public lands are majestic territories for exploration, recreation, preservation, or study. Others depend on public lands as a source of income and livelihood. And while a number of Americans lack awareness regarding the opportunities to explore their public lands, all Americans attain benefits from these common properties. Public land affect all Americans. Because of the importance of these lands, heated debates inevitably arise regarding their use or nonuse. The United States Constitution grants to Congress the "[p]ower to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the... Property belonging to the United States." 2 Accordingly, Congress, the body representing the populace, determines the various uses of our public lands. While the Constitution purportedly bestows upon Congress sole discretion to manage public lands, the congressionally-enacted Antiquities Act conveys some of this power to the president, effectively giving rise to a concurrent power with Congress to govern public lands. From an early age Gustave Eiffel showed a high interest in science and mechanics. He moved to Paris in 1850 for his studies, to prepare for his entrance into the polytechnic school. He was accepted to study at the central school of arts and manufactures, where he soon specialised in metallurgy, chemistry and civil construction. From then on he started his work in the metallurgy field. Gustave Eiffel is an exceptional engineer who started his promising career constructing the national railways. Thus, between 1858 and 1860, at the age of 26, he directed the construction of the Passerelle Eiffel, a 500 meter long metal railway bridge crossing the Garonne River in Bordeaux. This first great achievement, a real technical feat, earned him the recognition of his contemporaries and the press. With his first experiences, Gustave Eiffel founded his own company in Levallois-Perret in 1866: "G. Eiffel and Co." was born. Eiffel will then focus on the construction of viaducts, railways or road bridges and large buildings with a metal frame. The Eiffel workshops will thus build the Great Machine Gallery of the Paris World’s Fair of 1867 . In 1875, he built the big train station Budapest-Nyugati (so-called "West Station") in Hungary.
