This status quo antebellum treaty did nothing to address the causes of the war it ended, including the Orders in Council and impressment.     Cutting patterns in D.W. Griffith’s Biographs: An experimental statistical study Mike Baxter, 16 Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5BJ, U.K. (e-mail: [email protected]) 1 Introduction A number of recent studies have examined statistical methods for investigating cutting patterns within films, for the purposes of comparing patterns across films and/or for summarising ‘average’ patterns in a body of films. The present paper investigates how different ideas that have been proposed might be combined to identify subsets of similarly constructed films (i.e. exhibiting comparable cutting structures) within a larger body. The ideas explored are illustrated using a sample of 62 D.W Griffith Biograph one-reelers from the years 1909–1913. Yuri Tsivian has suggested that ‘all films are different as far as their SL struc- tures; yet some are less different than others’. Barry Salt, with specific reference to the question of whether or not Griffith’s Biographs ‘have the same large scale variations in their shot lengths along the length of the film’ says the ‘answer to this is quite clearly, no’. This judgment is based on smooths of the data using seventh degree trendlines and the observation that these ‘are nearly all quite different one from another, and too varied to allow any grouping that could be matched against, say, genre’1. While the basis for Salt’s view is clear Tsivian’s apparently oppos- ing position that some films are ‘less different than others’ seems to me to be a reasonably incontestable sentiment. It depends on how much you are prepared to simplify structure by smoothing in order to effect comparisons.

    Daniel O’Connell, Marquess Wellesley and the politics of Dublin Castle in the 1820s Dr Síle McGuckian In 1829 Daniel O’Connell stood at the pinnacle of his career. He was one of the most powerful men in Ireland, having achieved his life time goal of Catholic Emancipation as well as his election as a member of parliament. However, only nine years earlier in 1820 O’Connell had had virtually nothing to show for more than a decade of political sacrifice and agitation. The 1820s were to prove to be the crucial decade of O’Connell’s career. He pursued every possible means of achieving his goals, and although his success when it came appeared to have been achieved far from the corridors of power in Dublin Castle, his interactions with the members of the Irish Administration were an integral part of his successful campaign. The years following the Act of Union in 1801 had been very barren ground for the Irish Catholic movement with successive British governments taking a hard line on any Catholic claims. In 1820 the Irish movement was split. In London the prime minister, Lord Liverpool, and the majority of his cabinet was strongly opposed to Emancipation, while in Dublin an uncompromising Protestant administration remained in charge in the Castle. The independent Irish parliament had been abolished in 1801, and replaced by a separate Irish administration in Dublin Castle that was overseen by London. The lord lieutenant, or viceroy, remained the head of the Irish administration and the Crown’s representative in Ireland. He dealt directly with the prime minister and the home secretary.

Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time.

    (3200+ words) The Kennedy Farm From John Brown to James Brown A Place Ringing with Hope and History (Note: Because of the historical aspects of this article, and with the permission of several senior members of the Hagerstown African-American community, some dated synonyms for “African-Americans” have been employed.) The year is 1959. Negroes from Hagerstown, Winchester, Martinsburg and Charles Town have traveled over dark and potentially dangerous back-country roads to a common destination in southern Washington County, MD. Unbeknown to virtually the entire white community of the area, hundreds of colored people gather every weekend for a vital mission: to let the good times roll! Music-lovers spill out of jam-packed cars and stream toward the rhythmic sounds throbbing from a low-lying block building. Paying the cover charge (tonight it is $3), they duck inside to find the place in full swing. The large dance floor is packed with swaying bodies. Chairs ring the outside of the rectangular room, accommodating groups of young people engaged in lively conversation. The bartenders manning the long bar struggle to keep pace serving all the people eager to spend their hard-earned pay. At the far end of the long narrow structure, an electrifying entertainer dominates the scene. James Brown is on stage with his background vocalists, the Famous Flames. His instrumentalists, studded with pioneering rhythm and blues musicians from Little Richard’s former band, are laying down a funky groove. Brown’s footwork testifies that he once was an accomplished boxer. His sweat-drenched face gives credence to the claim that he is indeed the hardest working man in show business.
