This documentary series is about a rare species of human: the Uist crofter. Made from rock as old as the moon, Uist has been shaped by winds, tides and the people who have continuously worked this landscape for 5,000 years. The traditional crofting methods enable rare species of birds and flowers to thrive that are extinct elsewhere in the British Isles. Conflicts arise from the dramatic weather system and the front-line cycles of life and death. And from the flocking geese. Over the last 30 years, the resident population of Greylags has increased from less than 1,000 to over 9,000 birds. With little to check the breeding Greylag, the geese are destroying the cultivation of Uist corn. How the crofters meet these and other challenges with wits, humour and determination is a core driver of the action. Always there is the need to sow the seed and cultivate the corn to feed the cattle. And to shepherd the sheep on the hills. IS MONDAY 24 JUNE TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 26 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ River City Monday 24 June, BBC Scotland HD, 10.00-11.00pm Tuesday 25 June, BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm facebook.com/bbcrivercity twitter.com/bbcrivercity instagram.com/bbcrivercity This week in Shieldinch…Alex’s world is shattered and revenge against Lenny looms large; Angus urges Kim to seek help as her memory causes concern; and, oblivious to her fiancés infidelity, Scarlett seeks a best man for Dougie. Distraught, Alex hunts down Lenny, hell-bent on revenge. At Amber Cabs, Alex holds Lenny at gunpoint while Stevie urges Poppy to make him see sense – before it’s too late. As tensions rise between father and son, their makeshift truce is off and uncomfortable truths are served up, pushing one of them to an emotional edge and uncertain future. Elsewhere, Kim’s memory continues to cause concern but she hides the symptoms from Bob. Angus tries to convince her to seek help and get tested for early onset dementia. At the health centre, Kim reluctantly confesses all to Eve who reassures her but is concerned enough to instruct further tests. With their wedding on the horizon, Scarlett realises Dougie doesn’t have a best man. JW TUESDAY 25 JUNE TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 26 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Children of the Devolution, Ep 1/2 NEW Tuesday 25 June BBC Scotland, 10.00 – 11.00pm On the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Scottish Parliament, journalist and broadcaster Allan Little embarks on a journey across Scotland meeting people from different generations to find out how devolution has shaped their lives. He hears from the men and women in their sixties who remember Scotland’s first devolution referendum in 1979, the 40-somethings who came of age during the 1997 debate, and the 20-year olds who have never known a Scotland without a Parliament. Through their stories, Allan explores the political battles that have been fought in Holyrood over issues such as land reform and the controversial repeal of Section 28. In this first episode he also reflects on some of the early troubles that the parliament faced, from the scandal over the Holyrood building project to the death of the First Minister, Donald Dewar. As he makes his journey across the country - which includes a visit back to his old school in Stranraer to hear from current pupils, teachers and parents - Allan also gets the inside story on the Parliament’s first two decades from political figures including former and serving MSPs as well as from journalists and campaigners. JG WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 26 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Flour Power, Ep 4/10 Wednesday 26 June BBC Scotland, 8.00-8.30pm In this episode Flour Power is on the beautiful Hebridean island of Islay. World famous, of course, for it’s whisky, so no surprise then that today’s episode features the workforce of one of its most recognisable distilleries, Bruichladdich. Cask master Jay, housekeeper Katie and tour guide Dave are joined by client manager Mary as these four colleagues go to war over the coveted Flour Power trophy. Local head chef Stephen Crichton joins series judge Nicola Reith to decide on the winner, and there’s plenty of fighting ‘spirit’ needed from these four whisky wizards as they create their signature bakes. Favourite Katie is making a scrumptious layered sponge whilst Mary stays traditional with her scones. Jay plumps for his favourite recipe of custard tarts whilst Dave goes the extra mile with a duo of cheesecake! HM THURSDAY 27 JUNE TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 26 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Togail Sgeoil Thursday 27 June BBC ALBA, 9.00-10.00pm An appreciation of the work of Dr John MacInnes, Gaeldom's foremost folklorist. IS Annie Oakley NEW Thursday 27 June BBC ALBA, 10.30-11.25pm This documentary chronicles Annie Oakley’s life, from her childhood in Ohio to her world tours with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Phoebe Anne Moses first picked up a gun in 1875 at age fifteen. She taught herself to shoot and hunted quail, which she sold to support her struggling family. Frank Butler, who was making a name for himself on the variety stage, soon noticed the shooting prodigy. They married and went on tour as Butler and Oakley, the stage name that Annie would adopt. In 1885, Oakley entertained crowds in 40 cities across America. By 1895, that number grew to more than 130 cities around the world. The girl from Ohio had become a living symbol of the Wild West, a place that was fast disappearing. Jack is surprised by Victor’s surprising make-over. Victor claims he’s mixing it up a bit but Jack wangles the truth out of his pal - Twilight Monthly magazine is looking for a new cover star. He reveals they’re after a new person who looks a million dollars, a photogenic jet-setter who’ll sell magazines to the older market - and Victor thinks he fits the bill. At The Clansman, Victor’s dismayed to discover a few of the regulars also fancy themselves as cover stars and that this dream job isn’t going to be easy to win. Meanwhile, over at the shop, Navid notices stock is going missing and suspects schoolboy Darren is the sneaky shoplifter. However, Navid quickly realises he’ll have to use all his cunning to catch this hungry little culprit red-handed. • 1 Update Report on the Winning Years Prepared for the Scottish
Update Report on The Winning Years Prepared for the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee 9 September 2013 INTRODUCTION This report updates the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee on the activity and results from The Winning Years; eight milestones over three years which VisitScotland and partners have been promoting to, and working with, the tourism industry on. The overall ambition behind the development of the Winning Years concept is to ensure that the tourism industry and wider visitor economy is set to take full advantage of the long-term gains over the course of the next few years. The paper is divided into sections covering each of the milestones: Year of Creative Scotland The 2012 London Olympics The Diamond Jubilee Disney.Pixar’s Brave Year of Natural Scotland The Commonwealth Games The 2014 Ryder Cup Homecoming Scotland 2014 (incl. up to date list of events) From this report Committee members will see that excellent progress has been made, with strong interest in Scotland’s tourism product from around the world as the country builds to welcome the world in 2014. All of this despite the continuing global economic difficulties. Evidence of bucking the global trend and the success of the 2012 Winning Years milestones can be seen in VisitScotland’s announcement at the end of August that its two main marketing campaigns brought nearly £310m additional economic benefit for Scotland since January 2012. This is a rise of 14% on the same period the year before. VisitScotland’s international campaigns target Scotland’s main markets across the globe including North America, Germany and France as well as emerging markets, such as India and China.

  • Deliberative Audience Research for the Public Interest Test Into the Proposed Introduction of a New BBC Scotland TV Channel
Deliberative audience research for the Public Interest Test into the proposed introduction of a new BBC Scotland TV channel Report of findings from PAPA July 2017 Objectives, Sample & Methodology 2 Context & Objectives 1. The BBC has announced plans to launch a new channel in Scotland - running 7pm – midnight everyday 2. As part of the new regulatory structure of the BBC, this launch is subject to a Public Interest Test (PIT), overseen by the BBC Executive Board, and an Ofcom Competition Assessment 3. To meet the criteria set out in the PIT, the BBC Board must be satisfied that the new initiative supports the BBC’s restated mission; that it promotes its public purposes; that the BBC has taken reasonable steps to ensure that the change has no impact on fair and effective competition; and that the public value of the initiative justifies any impact on the competition 4. To measure the public value of the initiative a process is necessary which includes a measurement of the potential personal and citizen value which audiences in Scotland could gain from the launch of the new initiative 5. In late May 2017, PAPA conducted a deliberative qualitative study to provide indicative measures and insights of how the audience may value the proposal 6. A sample of the Scottish public, reflective of adults in Scotland, was presented with the proposal in order to: - Understand and explore the personal value they evaluate in the proposal - Understand and explore the citizen value they evaluate in the proposal - Identify other insights into competition, fulfilment of the Public Purposes or wider impacts the proposal might have on the BBC and the broader broadcasting environment 3 Overview of Methodology • A deliberative approach was used for this research in order to uncover the informed, considered views of a wide range of members of the public.

  • Service Review
Delivering Quality First in Scotland DELIVERING QUALITY FIRST IN SCOTLAND EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The BBC is the most trusted broadcaster in Scotland and a core part of the life of the nation. It unites the audience in enjoyment of the most popular TV, radio and online services, while also championing the diversity of the interests, cultures and languages of this nation of islands and regions. It is valued for upholding the highest standards of quality. The BBC’s commitment to Scotland is to offer a range and depth of programming which is both widely relevant and uniquely distinctive. As the only broadcaster which has invested in covering the whole country across all platforms, it is well-placed to do this. The BBC’s ambition in Scotland is to serve as a national forum, connecting the people of Scotland to each other, to the wider UK and to the rest of the world. As a public service broadcaster which has secure funding and global reach, the BBC is well-placed to achieve this. The BBC provides value to audiences in Scotland in two main ways: through programmes and services which are made in and for Scotland specifically; and through programmes and services which are broadcast across the whole UK. In Scotland, the audience rates the BBC as the leading provider of both Scottish news and non-news programming. Reporting Scotland has the highest reach of any news bulletin; TV opt-out programming1 reaches 44% of the audience every week and is highly appreciated; BBC Radio Scotland is second in popularity only to BBC Radio Two; BBC Scotland’s online portfolio has 3.7m weekly UK unique browsers2; and BBC ALBA attracts half a million English-speaking viewers to its Gaelic TV channel every week.

  • Final Determination Annex 2: Channel Take-Up and Substitution
BBC Scotland Competition Assessment Final Determination Annex 2: Channel Take-up and Substitution STATEMENT ANNEX Publication Date: 26 June 2018 BBC Scotland Competition Assessment – Final Determination Annex 2: Channel Take-up and Substitution A2. Channel Take-up and Substitution Introduction A2.1 In order to review the public value and assess the potential impact on fair and effective competition of the BBC’s proposal, we must first consider the audience that the new BBC Scotland channel is likely to attract. This Annex provides our assessment of the likely ’take- up’ of the BBC Scotland channel, i.e. the viewing hours the new channel is likely to attract in Scotland and the viewing share and audience reach it is likely to achieve.1 A2.2 The BBC’s proposal involves associated changes to existing BBC services, in particular BBC Two, BBC Four and CBBC HD in Scotland. We therefore also assess the effect on the viewing of BBC Two, BBC Four and CBBC in Scotland resulting from the BBC’s proposal. A2.3 We then identify the services most likely to be affected by the proposed new channel and the associated changes. We assess the potential audience substitution, including from existing BBC services and commercial services. A2.4 This Annex broadly reflects the assessment of take-up and substitution set out in our Consultation. Where relevant, we have set out the stakeholder views we received in response to our Consultation and how these, along with any further analysis, have influenced our assessment of take-up and substitution. In particular, we set out and respond to stakeholders’ views on: our take-up estimates for the new channel (paragraphs A2.104 to A2.135); and substitution from existing TV channels as a result of the BBC proposal (paragraphs A2.162 to A2.171).
