Last seen in 2010, Lydia left in fear of reprisal from Lenny [Frank Gallagher] having tried to frame him for the death of his son Ewan, who accidentally fell to his death from scaffolding. Lydia will return to the streets of Shieldinch when their daughter Amber [Jenny Hulse] turns to her for much-needed motherly emotional support. Jacqueline Leonard is looking forward to walking the streets of Shieldinch once again: “I had a lovely warm welcome when I stepped on to the set this week – there were some new faces and lots of familiar ones too! It’s great to be back in Shieldinch and I’m so excited to see what storylines await Lydia. Never a dull moment with the Murdochs!” Kieran Hannigan, Executive Producer, is thrilled to welcome Jacqueline back to the drama: “We’re delighted to have Jacqueline back on board at River City. She’s part of River City’s rich history and Lydia’s return will no doubt prove unsettling for her stoic estranged husband, Lenny. “Lydia Murdoch is a force of nature. A powerful woman who was very much the Achilles heel of Lenny. While others feared him, Lydia knew exactly how to keep Lenny in check and manipulate him to do whatever she wanted. They were quite a formidable couple. “Lydia’s return is sure to cause ructions. While Amber will welcome her mother with open arms, it remains to be seen whether Lenny will forgive and forget or if he’ll have revenge in mind.” Jacqueline begins filming with River City at the end of the month for storylines which will air from the end of June onwards. As well as River City, Jacqueline has starred in a number of key primetime dramas including EastEnders, Doctors, Coronation Street and Casualty, amongst many others. Jacqueline was part of the River City cast from 2007-2010. Jacqueline Leonard is the latest casting to join River City alongside Alex Ferns (EastEnders) as Rick Harper, a menacing criminal with no moral code, and Iain Robertson (Sea of Souls, Small Faces) as Stevie Adams, Scarlett’s eldest son who returns with a grudge to bear. A BBC Studios production, River City is part of BBC Scotland’s commitment to produce distinctive Scottish output and complements productions including BAFTA Scotland award-winning Shetland (BBC One), Trust Me (BBC One), Clique (BBC Three), Still Game (BBC One) and Two Doors Down (BBC Two). GM/LG TUESDAY 11 APRIL TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 15 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ River City Tuesday 11 April BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm facebook.com/bbcrivercity twitter.com/bbcrivercity instagram.com/bbcrivercity This week in Shieldinch…Maggie sets out to better herself but struggles to escape the sins of her past; Frankie’s eighteenth birthday presents her with some important life lessons; and Liz feels alone in marking the anniversary of Malcolm’s death. Maggie’s optimistic hopes of a new job at the Health Centre are dashed due to her drinking past. Desperate to work, she takes on a cleaning job at the Tall Ship but Ellie and Caitlin have reservations about a recovering alcoholic working in a pub surrounded by temptation. Maggie impresses Suzie but there’s trouble in store when booze goes missing. Maggie proclaims her innocence but when Suzie discovers the whisky in her handbag, she fires her. Caitlin’s disgusted at her mum but Ellie is secretly guilt-ridden. Elsewhere, Frankie’s eighteenth birthday celebrations prove tense as she snipes at her mother, Lorna, over anything and everything. Greig tries to lift the mood by taking his daughter on a night out but that sours when she bumps into former friend, Jules. Witnessing his daughter’s vindictive side, Greig challenges Frankie about her attitude and urges her to stop pushing people away or face being alone in adulthood. Liz feels overlooked as the first anniversary of Malcolm’s arrives. Molly and Alasdair are so wrapped up in their own lives they’re unaware of the significant date. However, when Amber reminds them, Molly organises a surprise gathering at the Tall Ship to mark the occasion much to Liz’s delight. Maggie is played by Kathryn Howden, Frankie by Louise McMenemy, Liz by Eileen McCallum, Ellie by Leah MacRae, Caitlin by Gayle Telfer Stevens, Suzie by Juliet Cadzow, Lorna by Alana Hood, Greig by Glen Wallace, Jules by Aisha Toussaint, Molly by Una McLean, Alasdair by Michael Mackenzie and Amber by Jenny Hulse. JW _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ A Family Divided NEW, Ep 1/1 Tuesday 11 April BBC Two Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm After World War II, a newly elected government promised to look after everyone ‘from cradle to grave’. This new documentary reveals the astonishing story of a Scottish family of 17 siblings who fell through the net, with children largely scattered across the country with little or no contact often growing up in heart-breaking circumstances. In the 1950s and 1960s the Clark family were swallowed up in the welfare system. With the mother often deemed to be unfit by the authorities, successive children were taken into care. Three children went to a croft in the Highlands, into what, as a surviving brother testifies in the programme, amounted to modern-day slavery, under-fed and frequently beaten, under the boarding out system; a form of fostering, which started in the 1870s with the aim of taking poor children out from overcrowded urban towns to rural areas and fresh air. Many of the other siblings ended up in adoptive homes or institutions across Scotland - often knowing nothing or very little about their other brothers and sisters - and some died in infancy, buried in unmarked graves. Only now as they reach retirement age – after years

  • Building Continuing Drama Shows a UK Exchange for Drama Professionals Running Soaps, Telenovelas and Long Running Series
Building Continuing Drama Shows A UK Exchange for Drama Professionals running Soaps, Telenovelas and Long Running Series Soaps are Continuing Dramas and a massive powerhouse for any TV channel in terms of the high viewing figures and engaging returning audience. A specialised programme, which MediaXchange has been running since 2016, addresses the creative process through meetings with your counterparts in the UK. Send the key creative team from your ‘Soap’ to spend time with writers, producers and TV channel executives of leading British Soaps and Continuing Dramas to analyse and explore the writing, long term planning and production process so key to long running success. Add the option for a continuing drama specialist to visit your full writing team at your home base to workshop on story planning and strategies for improving collaboration. Rationale We appreciate the challenges, faced by the studio and channel executives, the producers and writers, in maintaining the number of episodes and high rating storylines when working with year round series which run weekly or 3-5 days per week. We hope you will see what we have termed the Soaprunner Exchange as a useful tool in supporting the creative team behind your show. The UK is a particularly strong producer of ‘continuing dramas’ and ‘drama serials’ with each of the principal broadcasters airing more than long running show, whether one-hour or half hour, in primetime and daytime slots. It is a natural utilisation of the resources at our disposal to propose an exchange of processes between a successful show from Europe and shows from the same genre in the UK.

  • The Comedy Unit, and a BBC Scotland Television Series, River City (BBC, 2002-Date)
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Creative Industries Policy and Practice: A Study of BBC Scotland and Scottish Screen Lynne Alison Hibberd BA (Hons), MPhil Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Glasgow Faculty of Arts and Humanities Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre Film and Television Studies December 2008 © Lynne Alison Hibberd 2008 2 Abstract This thesis examines creative industries policy in film and television in Scotland. It explores the impact that different approaches to creative industries policy have on creative practice in two media industries, BBC Scotland and Scottish Screen, and reflects on how each of these bodies articulates its role as a „national‟ institution. BBC Scotland is the Scottish branch of the UK‟s largest public service broadcaster, while Scottish Screen exists on a far smaller scale, to serve the screen industries in Scotland. The thesis examines the role of BBC Scotland in sustaining the creative economy and contributing to the cultural life of Scotland. The study of Scottish Screen examines a key early aim of the agency, that of establishing a national film studio. The work investigates the connections between UK and Scottish levels of creative industries policy in light of the debates over the future of public service broadcasting and the Scottish Executive‟s cultural policy framework. The study outlines how ideas of cultural creativity and its economic significance have developed, charts how these ideas have affected policy debate, and explores the extent to which devolution has affected film and television policy.

CTEEA/S5/20/C19/C028 CULTURE, TOURISM, EUROPE AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE CALL FOR VIEWS ON THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON SCOTLAND’S CULTURE AND TOURISM SECTORS SUBMISSION FROM BBC SCOTLAND Executive Summary 1. Covid-19 has had a substantial impact on the BBC’s ability to produce programmes and services. Following advice from the WHO, public health organisations and the Scottish and UK Governments, the BBC closed the production of many programmes and services across its TV and radio output. The cancellation of key broadcasting events, ceasing of productions, and changes to schedules will continue to have an impact on what audiences see and hear across the BBC across the coming months. 2. Like other organisations continuing to operate during this crisis, the BBC has faced operational challenges. We’ve experienced reduced levels of staffing and the huge increase in demand for the BBC’s internal network as over 15,000 colleagues across the UK work from home. For those unable to carry out their work from home, safety is paramount and we’ve followed Scottish and UK Government advice. 3. The BBC Board took the decision to delay changes to the over-75s licence fee from 1 June to 1 August during an unprecedented time. The decision is to be kept under review. 4. In response to Covid-19, the BBC took swift action at the start of the pandemic to repurpose our services and programmes for the benefit of all audiences ensuring we kept the nation informed, educated and entertained. 5. The BBC enhanced our core role to bring trusted news and information to audiences in Scotland, the UK and around the world in a fast-moving situation, and to counter confusion and misinformation.
