Iraqi siblings with rare genetic disorder get a new lease of life in India Life of an Iraqi couple came to a standstill when they came to know that their young children, Ibrahim, 4, Sozan, 10, and Lozan, 11, were suffering from a rare genetic dis- order called pro- gressive familial intrahepatic chol- estasis (PFIC), a class of chronic cholestasis disor- der (a condition where bile cannot flow from the liver to the duodenum) . Surgeons, anes- thetists and 30 nurses led by Dr Vivek Vij, Direc- tor GI Surgery and Liver Transplant at Fortis Hospital, Noida persevered for 12 hours for each liver trans- plant for the three Iraqi siblings. Terming it as the rarest of rare case, Dr Vivek Vij said, “Very few such cases have been reported in the medical literature. This is for the first time that we came across a family wherein all their young children were suffering from PFIC.” —DTMT Network

Authorities in face-saving mode as JE toll mounts Continued from page 1

Maldah. Hospitals in the state capital including Cal- cutta Medical College, SSKM, National Medical Col- lege Hospital have reported several cases of JE. The number of patients is increasing by the day, but due to shortage of kits for the blood test many cases JE go undetected. In Malda Hospital, blood tests were delayed due to shortage of the kit. In Kolkata, a renowned health centre like School of Tropical Medicine is also fac- ing the kit crunch. “Shortage of the kits is a major hurdle in the treat- ment of patients. The kits available with us can test blood of only up to 100 patients,” lamented Nimai Bhattacharya, Head of Tropical Biology, Kolkata, while speaking to DTMT. A total of 40 people admitted in Malda Medical College. Blood test of 30 of them was carried out. Of them two local patients were tested positive. But, hospital authorities are tight-lipped about these cases. District Health Department rushed a group of specialists to assess the gravity of the situation as many more people were coming for the treatment of this disease. While doctors here ruled out existence of any case of JE, Abdur Rashid, Superintendent of Mal- dah Medical College, denied any knowledge about patients being tested positive for JE here. District magistrate Sarod Kumar Trivedi too denied preva- lence of the disease in Malda.. It is reliably learnt that while doctors and health workers are trying to save their skin, health work- ers are maintaining silence over the cases at the in- stance of their seniors and higher authorities. The sources said so far 19 doctors have been transferred from the hospitals and several health officials were suspended for dereliction of dutyfor not informing their superiors about the spread of the disease. First it was Super, then principal of Ut- tarbangho Medical College to be suspended in the case. Then came the order for transfer of the doc- tors. Many more heads are expected roll in the case. It was the doctors from the Association of Health Service who demanded suspension of the principal and Sankar Prasad Kabhiraj (Super), Partho Sarathi Ghosh, secretary and Bhaskar Roy assistant Secre- tary of the association. Susanto Bandopadhay, an official of Health and Education Department of North Bengal, however, denied issuance of any transfer order.
