NEW DELHI: Even as the legal battle between the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) and Pharma companies is on, developments in the industry took a new turn. The De- partment of Pharmaceuticals under the Minis- try of Chemical and Fertilisers has clarified that after careful consideration in consultation with the Ministry of Law and Justice it had decided to convey to the courts that the guidelines dated May 29 this year are to be withdrawn. The clarification came as a booster dose to pharma companies which were up in arms with the regulator. The industry interprets the clarification as curtailment of power of the NPPA from a prospective date. However, the Govern- ment says that the July 22 order of NPPA needs to be seen in the above context. But, time ran out for him and he died. Expressing regret over the death, Dr Amit Gupta, spokesman of the AIIMS, offered condolences to the bereaved family and promised inquiry into the matter. He denied involvement of any employee in the misappropriation but conceded that if a VIP patient or a patient with VIP recommendation comes to the hospital for admission, the hospital cannot deny him a bed. Contradicting the spokesman, AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr DK Sharma denied any misappropriation. Drawing a comparison between a hotel and a hospital, he said, “Unlike hotel where a chair can be vacated if the customer overstays, in a hospital, ailing occupant of a bed cannot be evicted to accommodate new patient.” However, he assured that if any wrongdoing comes to light, he will look into the matter and ensure disciplinary action against whosoever is found guilty. People come here from far off places in the hope of treatment. While sometimes they deny admission outright, at others keep procrastinating on their applications.
