Abstract Speech Lost From Speech: The Cognitive Linguistics of Alienation, Objectification, and Reclaiming by Melinda Yuen-ching Chen Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics University of California, Berkeley Professor Eve Sweetser, Chair This work, combining scholarship and research in linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, feminist theories, and cultural/critical studies, is a cognitive-linguistic inquiry into the “technology” of alienative and de-alienative language, particularly along lines of race/ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in the United States. Highlighting interrelations of agency, emotion, language performance, social identity, corporeal subjectivity, and cognitive rationality, through analysis of selected research I suggest a revision of the cognitive-linguistic conception of linguistic subjectivity, allowing for alienation that inheres at once in social position and in one’s relation to language itself. The first two chapters introduce the ontological and epistemological concern of linguistic alienation, as well as the theoretical frameworks, Cognitive Grammar and Mental Space Integration, supporting this study. I examine how we might define such a dynamic sensibility as sociocultural alienation, one that is almost by definition so reflexive that it “contaminates” its own expression in that sociocultural space, removing itself from the domain of what can be meant (Searle). Not accounting for this alienation, I claim, has led to the imputation of a particularly present linguistic subject, one presumably fully 1 Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. engaged in “fugual” linguistic interaction and “hypnotically” focused on the topic of discussion (Goffman), rather than vigilantly moving back and forth between the maintenance of the flow of conversation and the anxious substantiation of self. A case is made for the integrated consideration of affect with cognition. Chapter 3 investigates one of alienative language’s salient instances: objectification, here understood as a dynamic process, an often socially inscribed distantiation of some person or group in a representational field that constitutes a movement away from what they desire or would claim to possess - whether beloved persons, abstract humanist rights, conventional roles as agentive interlocutors, or cherished self-identities. Chapter 4 investigates objectification’s loose inverse: “reclaimings,” or moves aiming for symbolic self- (re)possession. Two case studies, the reclaimings of epithets “black” and “queer”, are examined historically and critically. The final chapter suggests how an interdisciplinary approach can enrich a linguist’s study of language performances that are ultimately both embodied and “felt”; at the same it proposes deeply reflexive approaches to both subjectivity and objectivity in research. This dissertation takes as its starting point the view that speaker and addressee are also implicated in sentences that do not have such pronouns (Speas and Tenny 2003). It investigates two linguistic phenomena: honorification and indexical shift, and the interactions between them, andshow that these discourse participants have an important role to play. The investigation is based on Magahi, an Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in the state of Bihar (India), where these phenomena manifest themselves in ways not previously attested in the literature. The phenomena are analyzed based on the native speaker judgements of the author along with judgements of one more native speaker, and sometimes with others as the occasion has presented itself. Magahi shows a rich honorification system (the encoding of “social status” in grammar) along several interrelated dimensions. Not only 2nd person pronouns but 3rd person pronouns also morphologically mark the honorificity of the referent with respect to the speaker.

The performative verbs used in directive and expressive speech acts belong to the semantic domain of communication verbs. The directive verbs occurring in the material are: appeal, authorize, call upon, conclude, invite, promise, request, urge and warn while the expressive verbs are: congratulate, express (gratitude), pay (tribute) and thank. The semantic analysis of directive verbs draws on Leech’s framework for illocutionary verbs analysis (Leech 1983: 218).     About pronouns Halldór Ármann Sigurðsson Lund University Abstract This essay claims that pronouns are constructed as syntactic relations rather than as discrete feature bundles or items. The discussion is set within the framework of a minimalist Context-linked Grammar, where phases contain silent but active edge features, edge linkers, including speaker and hearer features. An NP is phi- computed in relation to these linkers, the so established relation being input to context scanning (yielding reference). Essentially, syntax must see to it that event participant roles link to speech act roles, by participant linking (a subcase of context linking, a central computational property of natural language). Edge linkers are syntactic features–not operators–and can be shifted, as in indexical shift and other Kaplanian monster phenomena, commonly under control. The essay also develops a new analysis of inclusiveness and of the different status of different phi-features in grammar. The approach pursued differs from Distributed Morphology in drawing a sharp line between (internal) syntax and (PF) externalization, syntax constructing relations–the externalization process building and expressing items. LANGACKER University of California, San Diego Cognitive grammar takes a nonstandard view of linguistic semantics and grammatical structure. Meaning is equated with conceptualization. Semantic structures are characterized relative to cognitive domains, and derive their value by construing the content of these domains in a specific fashion. Gram- mar is not a distinct level of linguistic representation, but reduces instead to the structuring and symbolization of conceptual content. All grammatical units are symbolic: Basic categories (e.g., noun ond verb) are held to be notionally definable, and grammatical rules are analyzed as symbolic units that are both complex ond schematic. These concepts permit a revealing account of gram- maticol composition with notable descriptive advantages. Despite the diversity of contemporary linguistic theory, certain fundamental views enjoy a rough consensus and are widely accepted without serious question. Points of general agreement include the following: (a) language is a self-contained system amenable to algorithmic characterization, with suf- ficient autonomy to be studied in essential isolation from broader cognitive concerns; (b) grammar (syntax in particular) is an independent aspect of lin- guistic structure distinct from both lexicon and semantics; and (c) if mean- ing falls within the purview of linguistic analysis, it is properly described by some type of formal logic based on truth conditions. Individual theorists would doubtlessly qualify their assent in various ways, but (a)-(c) certainly come much closer than their denials to representing majority opinion. What follows is a minority report. Since 1976, I have been developing a linguistic theory that departs quite radically from the assumptions of the currently predominant paradigm.

This paper examines how the notion of performativity interacts with different tense, aspect and mood categories in Vedic. The claim is that one may distinguish three slightly different constraints on performative sentences, a modal constraint demanding that the proposition is represented as being in full accordance with the Common Ground, an aspectual constraint demanding that there is a coextension relation between event time and reference time and a temporal constraint demanding that the reference time is coextensive with speech time. It is shown that the Archaic Vedic present indicative, aorist indicative and aorist injunctive are quite compatible with these constraints, that the basic modal specifications of present and aorist subjunctive and optative violate the modal constraint on performative sentences, but give rise to speaker-oriented readings which in turn are compatible with that constraint.     Discourse in Cognitive Grammar* RONALD W. LANGACKER Abstract Cognitive Grammar presupposes an inherent and intimate relation between linguistic structures and discourse. Linguistic units are abstracted from usage events, retaining as part of their value any recurring facet of the interactive and discourse context. Linguistic structures thus incorporate discourse expectations and are interpretable as instructions to modify the current discourse state. There are multiple channels of conceptualization and vocalization, including the symbolization of attentional framing by intona- tion groups. An expression is produced and understood with respect to a presupposed discourse context, which shapes and supports its interpreta- tion. Particular contextual applications of linguistic units become entrenched and conventionalized as new, augmented units. As discourse proceeds, conceptual structures are progressively built and modi®ed in accordance with the semantic poles of the expressions employed. While initially mani- festing the speci®c conceptual structuring imposed by these expressions, the structures assembled undergo consolidation to re¯ect the intrinsic conceptual organization of the situations described. This conceptual organization has to be distinguished from grammatical constituency, which is ¯exible, variable, and in no small measure determined by discourse considerations. The processes behind naming are presented and explained in various ways. This paper will try to give a new insight into the motivation behind the creation of new names as seen from the linguistics viewpoint. Metaphor, as one of the major sources of motivation from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, is the basic form of human conceptualization. The first part of the paper presents the current theories about names. The second part describes the basic principles of cognitive linguistics as related to metaphors.
