This undergraduate research analyses the post-feminism theory applies in the language used by Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady movie. Therefore, there are two problems discussed in this research. The first one is how Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady movie applies post-feminism theory through the way she interacts with other gender. The second one is about the reactions of people around to her political decisions. This research is a qualitative and document analysis research. The data source of which was the language used by Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady movie’s transcript. The researcher used check-list as the instrument of the data gathering technique to analyse and categorize the language used by Margaret Thatcher to answer the problems formulation. Based on the analysis, there are two findings that can be used to answer the problems formulation. The first finding describes the four Post-feminist Characteristics found in Margaret’s languages used in The Iron Lady movie. Those characteristics are; General Rejection of Second Wave Feminism, Female Identity Crisis, Focus on the Individual, and Revival of Traditional Femininities. The second finding reveals the people reactions on Margaret’s political decisions. There were two types of people reactions founded. The first reaction is internal reactions that emerged from the closest people around her; her family and the members of her party. The second reaction is external reactions that emerged from her oppositional party and wide public rebellion. Both of the reactions; internal and external appears in words and actions of the people, which are publish through mass media; newspaper, TV, radio. The researcher also provides some suggestions for English lecturers and future researchers. The lecturers in English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) can use this movie to teach in Movie Interpretation class. While for the future researchers, they can analyse some other aspects of this movie which have never been discussed. The Analysis of Post-Feminism Theory Applies in the Language Used by Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady Movie. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Programe, Sanata Dharma University. Sedangkan bagi peneliti selanjutnya, dapat menggunakan film ini untuk membahas topic-topik lain yang kiranya belum pernah didiskusikan sebelumnya Kata Kunci: The Iron Lady Movie, Margaret Thatcher, Post-feminism, People Reaction. viii PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to deliver my greatest gratitude to the Almighty God and Lord Jesus Christ. • Gynocentrism As a Narcissistic Pathology
24 GYNOCENTRISM AS A NARCISSISTIC PATHOLOGY Peter Wright ABSTRACT Gynocentrism is defined as the practice of prioritizing the needs, wants and desires of women. Examples of gynocentrism are found in the culture of social institutions, and within heterosexual relationships where men are invited to show deference to the needs, wants and desires of women, a practice otherwise referred to as chivalry or benevolent sexism. This study compares gynocentric behaviors with clinical descriptions of narcissism to discover how closely, and in what ways, the two concepts align. The investigation concludes that narcissistic behavior is significantly correlated with behaviors of gynocentrically oriented women, and that gynocentrism is a gendered expression of narcissism operating within the limiting context of heterosexual relationships and exchanges. Keywords: Gynocentrism, chivalry, benevolent sexism, narcissism, narcissistic personality inventory, gender NEW MALE STUDIES: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL ~ ISSN 1839-7816 ~ Vol 9, Issue 1, 2020, Pp. 24–49 © 2020 AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF MALE HEALTH AND STUDIES 25 INTRODUCTION Gynocentrism has been described as a practice of prioritizing the needs, wants and desires of women over those of men. It operates within a moral hierarchy that emphasizes the innate virtues and vulnerabilities of women and the innate vices of men, thus providing a rationale for placing women’s concerns and perspectives ‘on top’, and men’s at the bottom (Nathanson & Young, 2006; 2010). The same moral hierarchy has been institutionalized in social conventions, laws and interpretations of them, in constitutional amendments and their interpretive guidelines, and bureaucracies at every level of government, making gynocentrism de rigueur behind the scenes in law courts and government bureaucracies that result in systemic discrimination against men (Nathanson & Young, 2006; Wright, 2018a; Wallace et al., 2019; Naurin, 2019).

  • 7. Not So Romantic for Men
DENNIS S. GOUWS 7. NOT SO ROMANTIC FOR MEN Using Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe to Explore Evolving Notions of Chivalry and Their Impact on Twenty-First-Century Manhood THE NEED FOR A NEW MALE STUDIES The New Male Studies offer an alternative to conventional gender-based scholarship on boys and men.1 Unlike Men’s-Studies research, which is fundamentally informed by gender feminism, New-Male-Studies research focusses on boys’ and men’s lived experiences and shares its concern about gender discrimination against all people with equity feminism.2 The New Male Studies are embodied and male positive (male affirming): their approach to manhood, which results when one “configure[s] biological masculinity to meet the particular demands of a specific culture and environmental setting,” not only celebrates males’ experience of different manhood cultures and subcultures, but also critiques—and suggests strategies for overcoming—systemic inhibitors of masculine affirmation (Ashfield, 2011, p. 28; Gilmore, 1990). An acute attentiveness to how manhood is inscribed in texts, textual criticism, and pedagogy is central to their methodology. In much of Western culture and literature, gynocentric (women-centered) and misandric (male-hating) value judgments have adversely influenced boys’ and men’s lives. For example, pervasive stereotypes of manhood that rely on gynocentric and misandric assumptions about males infer that it is acceptable to regard them as little more than pleasers, placaters, providers, protectors, and progenitors; such stereotypes assume the male body is primarily an instrument of service rather than the dignified embodiment of a sentient boy or a man (Nathanson & Young, 2001, 2006, 2010).

  • Post-Postfeminism?: New Feminist Visibilities in Postfeminist Times
FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES, 2016 VOL. 16, NO. 4, 610–630 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2016.1193293 Post-postfeminism?: new feminist visibilities in postfeminist times Rosalind Gill Department of Sociology, City University, London, UK ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article contributes to debates about the value and utility Postfeminism; neoliberalism; of the notion of postfeminism for a seemingly “new” moment feminism; media magazines marked by a resurgence of interest in feminism in the media and among young women. The paper reviews current understandings of postfeminism and criticisms of the term’s failure to speak to or connect with contemporary feminism. It offers a defence of the continued importance of a critical notion of postfeminism, used as an analytical category to capture a distinctive contradictory-but- patterned sensibility intimately connected to neoliberalism. The paper raises questions about the meaning of the apparent new visibility of feminism and highlights the multiplicity of different feminisms currently circulating in mainstream media culture—which exist in tension with each other. I argue for the importance of being able to “think together” the rise of popular feminism alongside and in tandem with intensified misogyny. I further show how a postfeminist sensibility informs even those media productions that ostensibly celebrate the new feminism. Ultimately, the paper argues that claims that we have moved “beyond” postfeminism are (sadly) premature, and the notion still has much to offer feminist cultural critics. Introduction: feminism, postfeminism and generation On October 2, 2015 the London Evening Standard (ES) published its first glossy magazine of the new academic year. With a striking red, white, and black cover design it showed model Neelam Gill in a bright red coat, upon which the words “NEW (GEN) FEM” were superimposed in bold.

  • Language Variation and Ethnicity in a Multicultural East London Secondary School
Language Variation and Ethnicity in a Multicultural East London Secondary School Shivonne Marie Gates Queen Mary, University of London April 2019 Abstract Multicultural London English (MLE) has been described as a new multiethnolect borne out of indirect language contact among ethnically-diverse adolescent friendship groups (Cheshire et al. 2011). Evidence of ethnic stratification was also found: for example, “non-Anglo” boys were more likely to use innovative MLE diphthong variants than other (male and female) participants. However, the data analysed by Cheshire and colleagues has limited ethnographic information and as such the role that ethnicity plays in language change and variation in London remains unclear. This is not dissimilar to other work on multiethnolects, which presents an orientation to a multiethnic identity as more salient than different ethnic identities (e.g. Freywald et al. 2011). This thesis therefore examines language variation in a different MLE-speaking adolescent community to shed light on the dynamics of ethnicity in a multicultural context. Data were gathered through a 12-month ethnography of a Year Ten (14-15 years old) cohort at Riverton, a multi-ethnic secondary school in Newham, East London, and include field notes and interviews with 27 students (19 girls, 8 boys). A full multivariate analysis of the face and price vowels alongside a quantitative description of individual linguistic repertoires sheds light on MLE’s status as the new London vernacular. Building on the findings of Cheshire et al. (2011), the present study suggests that language variation by ethnicity can have social meaning in multi-ethnic communities. There are apparent ethnolinguistic repertoires: ethnic minority boys use more advanced vowel realisations alongside high rates of DH-stopping, and the more innovative was/were levelling system.

  • Section A. Feminist Theory in Late-Nineteenth-Century France, The
45 2 Section A. Feminist Theory In late-nineteenth-century France, the word féminisme, meaning women’s liberation was first used in political debates. The most generic way to define feminism is to say that it is an organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and common interests and based on the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. Some initial forms of feminism were criticized for considering the perspective of only white, middle-class and educated people. Ethnically specific or multiculturalists forms of feminism were created as a reaction to this criticism. Most feminists believe that inequality between men and women are open to change because they are socially constructed. Many consider feminism as theory or theories, but some others see it as merely a kind of politics in the culture. Feminist theory aims to understand gender inequality and focus on sexuality, gender politics, and power relations. To achieve this, it has developed theories in a wide range of disciplines. Feminist theory is the extension of feminism into fields of theory or philosophy. Since in academic institutions ‘theory’ is often the male standpoint and feminists have fought hard to expose the fraudulent objectivity of male ‘science’, (for example, the Freudian theory of female sexual development) some feminists have not wished to embrace theory at all. Raman Selden, Widdowson and Brooker argue “Feminism and feminist criticism may be better termed a cultural politics than a theory or theories” (116). However, much recent feminist criticism wants to free itself from the ‘fixities and definites’ of theory and to develop a female discourse which is not considered as a belonging to a recognized conceptual position (and, therefore, probably male produced).

  • “Humanism, Gynocentrism, and Feminist Politics,” Iris Marion Young Provides a Convenient Articulation of Long-Standing Debates Within Feminist Theory
Proponha uma tradução ao português para o texto abaixo. In her essay “Humanism, Gynocentrism, and Feminist Politics,” Iris Marion Young provides a convenient articulation of long-standing debates within feminist theory. Humanist feminists, such as Simone de Beauvoir, argue for the equality of women and against the discriminatory practices of the past and present. De Beauvoir’s standard for equality and the grounds for opposition come from the action and language of men. As Young says, “Humanist feminism defines women’s oppression as the inhibition and distortion of women’s human potential by a society that allows the self- development of men” (Feminist 1990, 231). De Beauvoir’s The Second Sex shows how fruitful this approach can be, as she exposes the debased images and myths that men have created about women and the ways that the Western tradition has forced them to act as the passive, ornamental, and subordinate other to men. De Beauvoir argues that women ought to be thought of as free and equal agents, and her notions of “free” and “equal” come from the dominant male culture. The result is that women are separated from any gender-specific practices and that the existing value system is left in place. Gynocentric feminism, on the other hand, sees, in Young’s words, “women’s oppression as the devaluation and expression of women’s experience by a masculinist culture that exalts violence and individualism”(Feminist 1990, 231-32). Gynocentric feminism thus affirms women’s practices against those of men. It does not ask for equality by male standard and access to a man’s ”world,” as humanist feminists do.

  • Introduction 1 Theorizing Women's Singleness: Postfeminism
Notes Introduction 1. See Ringrose and Walkerdine’s work on how the boundaries of femininity are policed, constituting some subject positions – those against which normative femininity comes to be defined – ‘uninhabitable’ (2008, p. 234). 1 Theorizing Women’s Singleness: Postfeminism, Neoliberalism, and the Politics of Popular Culture 1. Lewis and Moon (1997) have observed that women’s singleness is at once glamorized and stigmatized, however I suggest, and explore how, this is a particular feature of postfeminist media culture. 2. As Jill Reynolds argues, ‘the cultural context today incorporates new repre- sentations of singleness while continuing to draw on older, more devalued notions that being single is a problem for women: generally to be resolved through commitment to a heterosexual relationship’ (2008, p. 2). 3. In early feminist studies of how women were represented in the media, the ‘images of women’ style criticism dominated, arguing that women were mis- represented in and through the mainstream media and that such ‘negative’ rep- resentations had deleterious effects on the women who consumed them. This is a position that has been thoroughly critiqued and replaced by more nuanced approaches to both signification and consumption. See Walters’ chapter ‘From Images of Women to Woman as Image’ for a rehearsal of these debates (1995). 4. For example, in her critical text Postfeminisms, Ann Brooks (1997) conceptual- izes it in terms of the intersections of feminism, poststructuralism, postmod- ernism, and postcolonialism. Others have theorized it primarily as a popular manifestation which effectively represents an updated form of antifeminism (Faludi, 1991; Walters, 1995; Kim, 2001). 5. The idea that postfeminism is itself constituted by contradiction, ‘the product of competing discourses and interests’ (Genz & Brabon, 2009, p.

By adapting qualitative descriptive study, this study covers mainly secondary data from English language sources, be it from books, academic articles or any literatures pertaining to this topic, which obtained from various databases. This study argues that modernism and postmodernism is the worldviews that become the essence of feminism. By looking at the variations of how feminism is studied, e.g. definitions, waves and school of thought, this study concluded that there are several points indicating the relations that exist between modernism and postmodernism with feminism. Modernism can be seen in the relational approach of the liberal, classical Marxist and socialist feminism in the first wave, which are more centered on education, politics and economic participation. Meanwhile, the relation of postmodernism to feminism is exampled in the deconstructing approach of the radical feminism that began from the second wave shown in their individualist views on sex, sexuality, motherhood, childbirth, and language institution.
