Die technische Literatur der Franzosen, Eng­ länder und'Amerikaner ist für den deutschen Tech­ niker von vielseitigem Interesse. Er lernt durch das Studium derselben nicht blos Detailconstructio- nen kennen, die jeder Nation eigentümlich betreffs der Erfindung und Form sind, sondern erweitert auch seinen Gesichtskreis durch die Kenntniss der grossartigen Werke dieser Nationen und ihrer Be­ strebungen; er gewinnt ein directes Verständniss ihrer Art, in technischen Sachen zu denken, ihres, technischen Geistes. c o v.-_ Das Studium der technischen Entwickelung und ^ i der Leistungen dieser Nationen hat für den Tech-, i niker auch deshalb eine hohe Wichtigkeit, weit ­ es ihn am besten vorbereitet, die Thätigkeit und die Werke derselben mit Erfolg durch Anschauung kennen zu lernen. Wenn er auch zu dem Ende eine gewisse Fertigkeit in fremden Sprachen auf der Schule sich aneignen konnte, so erfordern die technischen Kunstausdrücke doch noch ein eigenes und selbstständiges Studium, da sie auf den Yor- hereitungsanstalten nicht gelehrt werden können. VI VORWORT. Das von dem Herrn Verfasser vor kurzem heraus­ gegebene «Technische Vocabular» in Deutsch-Fran­ zösisch und das vorliegende in Deutsch-Englisch sind, nach meiner Ansicht, troff liehe Hülfsmittel beim Studium der technischen Literatur und für den mündlichen Verkehr. Jeder Fachmann, der ähnliche Zusammenstellungen zu machen versucht hat, wird zugeben, dass durch zweckmässige An­ ordnung und Auswahl, auf geringem Raum vieles geleistet und dass die Uebersetzung eine ge­ schickte ist. Es wird daher einer besondern Empfehlung dieser Arbeit an die Fachgenossen nicht bedürfen. Die praktische Einrichtung und die Handlichkeit des Buches dürften überdies nicht wenig zu seiner Einführung beitragen. > ^ Av- c 'r: - Aachen , im August 1879. I WSm VON KAVEN. VORBEMERKUNG DES VERFASSERS. Das vorliegende «Englisch - deutsche Vocabulary > ist nach denselben Grundsätzen bearbeitet, welche für das unlängst erschienene und überaus günstig aufgenommene « Vocabulaire technique franqais- allemand» massgebend gewesen sind. Hier, wie dort, ist auf übersichtliche, praktische Anordnung, Answahl des Wichtigsten, und vollkommene Zuverlässigkeit der Hauptnachdruck gelegt worden. Für das Englische sind die geschätzten Werke von R oscoe , Wilson , Lardner , Maxwell , Lockyer , Stewart, Atkinson , Percy , Stephenson , V ose, Bourne , Shelley , Bankine u . s. w. zu Bathe gezogen, sowie verschiedene Zeitschriften («Engineering», «The Engineer» u. a.) und die Encyklopädien von Chambers, Spon («Dic­ tionary of Engineering»), Johnson («Cyclopaedia of Ma­ chinery») und U re . Der «Anhang » beruht auf dem von Herrn Geh. Reg.- und Baurath von Kaven freundlichst übersandten (im Buchhandel nicht käuflichen) «Catalogue des vegetaux etc.» der österreichischen Staatseisenbahn- Gesellschaft. Ein Vergleich mit dem deutsch-französischen «Foc«- bulaire » wird unschwer erkennen lassen, dass ich überall auf Vervollkommnung bedacht gewesen bin; besonders sind die wichtigen Abschnitte über Maschinenbau und Technologie etwas eingehender behandelt und um einige Kapitel vermehrt worden. VIII VORBEMERKUNG DES VERFASSERS. Ich erfülle eine angenehme und ehrenvolle Pflicht, indem ich den Herren Geh. Reg. - und Baurath von Kaven (Aachen), R.-R. Professor Dr. Hartig (Dresden), Professor von R eiche (Aachen), Oberbaurath Professor Sternberg (Karlsruhe), M. M. Freiherr von Weber (Berlin) und Ingenieur J. Dewes (Chicago) für Ergän­ zungen, Besserungsvorschläge und Hinweis auf englische Originalwerke resp. Uebersendung derselben, auch an dieser Stelle ergebensten Dank ausspreche. Der freund­ lichen Unterstützung des Directors der königl. Tech­ nischen Hochschule in Aachen Herrn G. R.-R. von Ivaven insbesondere verdanke ich zahlreiche und wesentliche Verbesserungen. During the construction of the shoring wall, a work window will be established to eliminate train traffic on the adjacent track for that short duration.     Using veneer hand tools Veneer Tape Dispenser A gum tape dispenser that will take 3/4”wide gum tape is excellent for securing veneer seams together. A manual pull and tear machine which has a brush or sponge that will moisten tape (25 gram weight). It is indispensable for any shop that works with veneer. A sponge in a cup works well for moistening short lengths of tape for smaller projects. Veneer Gum Tape 25 to 30 gram (non-perforated) veneer tape that has water activated hide or vegetable glue is ideal for veneering. It is cut to length, moistened with a sponge or with the tape dispenser wetting system, placed over the veneer seam or joint, and smoothed or burnished down with a brush or rag to secure it firmly onto the veneer. It is used for final assembly of veneer joints in decorative veneering, in order to create a single skin or sheet of veneer. Ideally, after the gum tape is applied over the joints, the assembled veneer skin gets placed between two plattens to insure that the moisture from the gum tape does not warp the veneer until it dries. This complete skin will then be glued onto a foundation or core of smooth plywood or MDF, with the gum tape side exposed. After the veneer is glued to the core with a mechanical or vacuum type veneer press, the tape is removed by moistening and peeling it off with a sharpened flexible putty knife, or sanded off the veneer with a belt, stroke or random orbital sander.

This growth includes a great increase of surface mining or strip mining, as you call it. In the last 20 years, it has increased much more than underground mining, which, in some of the old industrial countries, is decreasing substantially. A number of factors have con- tributed to this trend; these include the development of heavy equipment, lower costs, more complete recovery of the coal, and smaller labor requirements. The American strip mines for bituminous coal and the German opencast mines for brown coal (also called lignite) are among the most important examples. This report will present the facts and trends of mining and reclamation in Germany only; it will not at this time make any direct comparison with the situation in Ohio. As you will see, there are very different conditions and solutions, but also very similar trends and problems in the two countries. Let me take three examples. Many draglines built since the 1970’s are still original in configuration and utilize original component technology. ie electrical drives, gear configurations. However, there have been many innovative enhancements, configuration changes and upgrading of components The objective is to critically analyze the maintenance strategies, and to determine whether these strategies are still supportive of optimizing the availability and reliability of the draglines. The maintenance strategies associated with dragline maintenance vary, dependent on fleet size and mine conditions; they are aligned with the Risk Based Model. The effectiveness of the maintenance strategy implemented with dragline maintenance is highly dependent on the initial effort demonstrated at the commencement of planning for the mining operation.
