PRESS RELEASE 12 May 2008 BBC devotes a day to the Amazon The BBC mounts its most in-depth live coverage yet of the Amazon rain forest with The Amazon Paradox special day of programming on Thursday 15 May. Throughout the day, BBC World Service journalists will deliver reports for radio and online at bbcworldservice.com/amazon <http://www.bbcworldservice.com/amazon> . The Amazon Paradox explores the local and global economic and environmental cycles resulting in major deforestation of the region. Live reports from across the Amazon will dominate the BBC's news output throughout the day. Americo Martins, BBC World Service Americas Executive Editor, said: "The Amazon Paradox will take a fresh look at an important issue. The day will give audiences an opportunity to hear the voices of those blamed for the deforestation, meet those policing and governing this vast area and to get to the core of how all of this is affecting the lives of the local communities and millions of people across the world." The BBC will tell the stories of those involved in the legal and illegal destruction of the rainforest. While journalists Fergus Nicoll, Gary Duffy and Carolina Glycerio will bring live reports and in-depth analysis from three different locations in Brazil, journalists from several BBC language services will also travel to Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Suriname. They will explore the challenges faced by authorities trying to save and exploit the forest with the very communities sometimes blamed for the major deforestation - the "Amazon Paradox". A BBC boat touring the Amazon river will visit Manaus, the biggest city in the Amazon region, and Santarem which suffers major illegal logging. Reports will be delivered to the BBC's international audiences in English, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese while the remaining 22 language services will also cover the events. The BBC's interactive radio and online programme World Have Your Say will link communities living in the Amazon basin with listeners across the world. BBC Brasil will also team up with their Brazilian online partner ENN to bring news, stories, images and videos from the heart of the Amazon. The dedicated website, bbcworldservice.com/amazon <http://www.bbcworldservice.com/amazon> will carry the best audio to come out of the day along with a special Amazon Q&A and interactive maps. ARTHUR DO NASCIMENTO FERREIRA BARROS Universidade Federal de Pernambuco RAIMUNDO NONATO RODRIGUES Universidade Federal de Pernambuco LUIZ CARLOS MIRANDA Universidade Federal de Pernambuco Abstract This paper measures the level of disclosure of information in the fight against corruption in sustainable reports disclosed by companies that participated in the last major corruption scandals in Brazil, between the years 2013 and 2016. The data were collected from the sustainability reports of the organizations (Petrobras S.A., Odebrecht Organization, Brasil Foods S.A. and JBS S.A.). To measure the disclosure level was used the content analysis through the Novethic/SCPC survey (2006), as used in other papers (Branco, 2010; Machado, 2013; Branco & Matos, 2016). Among the results, the main was that the fact that companies were exposed to large corruption scandals did not modify their level of disclosure of information in the fight against corruption, contrary to what was expected, companies had high levels of this kind of disclosure before the scandals and continued to have after. The results also showed that the information about internal organization to combat corruption, such as ethics committees, reporting system, departments to deal with this issue and about the implementation of procedures related to suppliers and other business partners, such as actions that encourage the implementation of anti-corruption training and systems was the most disclosure. While information about partnerships with nongovernmental entities or other organizations that have an interest in combating to this type of behavior was the least reported.

This report is an important milestone for the BBC and for our industry. It is proof that fair representation need not be an aspiration. It can be something we do every day. And it drives creative excellence and success. One of the most remarkable aspects of 50:50 is that it’s voluntary: it’s grown because our teams have embraced the ambition. From something that started with one team in our newsroom, we now have up to 5,000 commissioners, producers, journalists and presenters taking part. I have the greatest admiration for what they’ve achieved. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our partners. It’s been fantastic to see 50:50 expanding across the world, with pilots running from Europe to America, South Africa and Australia.
