I argue that in response to the threat of Nazism and communism, mainline ecumenical American Protestants aimed to create a universalist “Christian World Order” based on liberal democracy and Christian ethics. Only this new order, they argued, could supersede nationalist and materialist agendas and restore world peace. By rhetorically depicting Nazi and Communist "totalitarianism" as anti-Christian, a construction I refer to as the Christian- Totalitarian Dichotomy, these Protestants drove German conservatives away from Nazism and toward Western liberal democracy through association with Christianity. They accomplished this through two primary methods. First, by politicizing Allied occupation policy as "vengeful" and positioning the majority of Germans as "victims" of Nazism, ecumenical Protestants successfully lobbied for political leniency that facilitated the German transition from enemy to ally. Second, American Protestants embarked on a widespread philanthropic aid campaign that brought millions of dollars of goods to Germany. Their aid campaigns continuously emphasized horrific material conditions in postwar Germany, with the necessity of humanitarian aid to stave off both a return of nihilism and an aggressive Soviet-communist advance. By reinforcing the need to spread and defend global democracy, ecumenical Protestants also helped forge a new postwar American nationalism that embraced international responsibility. Woltering | v Acknowledgements Writing this dissertation has been one of the most rewarding, challenging and worldview-shaking experiences of my life. The complexities of the issues I have attempted to unravel are enormous, and my conclusions ought to be treated with careful wisdom and above all more research. My personal stakes in unraveling the connection between National Socialism, the Protestant tradition and democracy could not be higher. I recognize now, even if I did not at the time I began, that my investigation of these issues stemmed from a personal wrestling with the historical significance of these themes and their relationship to transcendent values. That I have found my footing and completed this task at a moment when American Protestants’ relationship to democracy, truth and totalitarianism is at the center of American political life seems somehow portentous. Questions of national-community, inclusion and justice seem just as pressing in Germany. The various foundations and institutions that funded my research and cost of living made the completion of this dissertation possible. I am grateful to the CUNY Graduate Center for six years of fellowship funding and numerous research grants. The Transatlantic Seminar between Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Graduate Center, as well as Central European History also provided generous travel funds. Barbara Leopold and Kathleen McCarthy at the Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society also offered fellowships at times of great need. My colleague Darius Harwardt and his wife Claudia extended to me friendship and lodgings on two separate occasions in Germany. There are many archivists and library staff who I ought to mention, but two in particularly stand out: Joel Thoreson at the Evangelical Lutheran Archives of America, and Herr Doktor Peter Baier at the Protestant Central Church Archives in Berlin. Woltering | vi Many scholars have molded me into a professional historian over the past decade, but a few stand out as particularly influential. My many colleagues at the Graduate Center created a welcoming, collaborative and inspiring work environment, especially Mila Burns, Diana Moore, Glen Olsen, Chelsea Shields and David Viola. I hope they learned as much from me as I from them. Belinda Davis has stuck with me the longest, guiding me as both an undergraduate and graduate student and I have no doubt I would not be here today without her counsel. The many lengthy conversations I held with Mary Roldán informed my understanding of the relationship between religious organizations and the American government. Constantin Goschler gave me incredibly useful advice in structuring my dissertation. Susannah Heschel and Matthew Hockenos both graciously offered resources and notes, the latter informing my grasp of Martin Niemöller’s trip in America, the former my take on transnational Christian-Jewish dialogue and Holocaust memory. I would also like to thank the members of this dissertation committee for their time and feedback. Julia Sneeringer’s insightful comments as second reader have refined my arguments and analysis. David Nasaw taught me both as an instructor and gave thoughtful feedback on my dissertation proposal. Of course, all mistakes, errors and failures are of my own making. The only word fitting to describe my relationship with Benjamin Carter Hett is the German “Doktorvater.” He has shamed me with his incredible work ethic and discipline. He has been enormously generous with his time and resources, so much so that I am certain I have squandered his many insights into History and my research. His insightful, patient, challenging, honorable and demanding spirit has guided me through graduate studies as no other. Schäfer Abstract The political mobilization of conservative Protestants in the United States since the 1970s is commonly viewed as having resulted from a “backlash” against the alleged iniquities of the 1960s, including the excess-es of the counterculture. In contrast, this article maintains that conservative Protestant efforts to infiltrate and absorb the counterculture contributed to the organizational strength, cultural attractiveness, and politi-cal efficacy of the New Christian Right. The essay advances three arguments: First, that evangelicals did not simply reject the countercultural ideas of the 1960s, but absorbed and extended its key sentiments. Second, that conservative Protestantism’s appropriation of countercultural rhetoric and organizational styles played a significant role in the right-wing political mobilization of evangelicals. And third, that the merger of evan-gelical Christianity and countercultural styles, rather than their antagonism, ended up being one of the most enduring legacies of the sixties. In revisiting the relationship between the counterculture and evangelicalism, the essay also explores the larger implications for understanding the relationship between religion and poli-tics. The New Christian Right domesticated genuinely insurgent impulses within the evangelical resurgence. By the same token, it nurtured the conservative components of the counterculture. Conservative Protestant-ism thus constituted a political movement that channeled insurgencies into a cultural form that relegitimized the fundamental trajectories of liberal capitalism and consumerist society. Marquette University, 2018 Origen has traditionally been famous for his universalism, but many scholars now express doubt that Origen believed in a universal and permanent apocatastasis. This is because many scholars are convinced that Origen’s teaching on moral autonomy (or freedom of choice) is logically incompatible with the notion that God foreordains every soul’s future destiny. Those few scholars who do argue that Origen believed in both moral autonomy and universal salvation either do not know how to reconcile these two views in Origen’s theology, or their proposed “solutions” are not convincing. In Frankfurt, he preached at the American Christ Chapel, in Düsseldorf at the Rheinstadium, and two days later he closed his first German campaign with a service at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Thousands came to see him and hundreds stepped forward at the end of the service to publicly accept Christ as their Savior. Another campaign fol- lowed in 1955. The American preacher then returned to Germany again dur- ing the 1960s, and his work there peaked in 1970 with his EURO 70 campaign.1 Graham’s campaigns in Germany were not foreign spectacles, but rites of passage in German Protestantism. Christian Universalism (Christian Universalism) says that all will be saved, but through Christ. All people will come to worship and adore Christ. This will happen during an almost “Purgatory” state where people will be held until they come to confess Christ. This keeps Christ center. This view can also be called “Ultimate Reconciliation.” Tentmaker.org is a website that many who hold this view reference and use to find “scholarly” articles (some articles are written by scholars and some are not) and sources. One of the tenents espoused by Tentmaker, et al, is that Scriptures have been mistranslated or that early traditions aren’t correctly viewed. Defending a traditional view against such presuppositions can be difficult. 1 Main Issues There are two main points that need to be addressed, as they are the ones that the majority of the questions will come from. 1) The Greek word aion. This Greek word is used for the word “eternal” and “forever” in the New Testament. One of the main claims that the proponents of Christian Universalism make is that the word, from which we get our word “eon,” is mistranslated and means “an age.” In this, there is a sliver of truth. Aion is used in different ways in the New Testament and is a word that has no real English equivalent.

One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain­ ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In­ dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies.

Groß geworden in einem liberalen, demokratischen Haushalt. Dennoch wurde ihr Wunsch, später als Theater- und Kunstkritikerin zu arbeiten von ihrem Vater abgelehnt. Stattdessen besuchte sie ein Lehrerinnenseminar und beginnt anschließend ein Jura Studium. Nach dem zweiten juristischen Staatsexamen fängt sie als Gerichtsassessorin in einer Rechtsberatung für Frauen an. E. Schwarzhaupt beschäftigt sich mit den Lektüren „Mein Kampf“ und „Mythos des 20. Jahrhunderts“ und bezieht 1932 öffentlich Stellung gegen das nationalsozialistische Frauenbild in „Die Stellung der Frau im Nationalsozialismus“. Ihr Verlobter, ein jüdischer Arzt verliert 1933 die Zulassung und emigriert in die Schweiz. Schwarzhaupt bemüht sich um eine berufliche Perspektive in der Schweiz. Nachdem sie 1936 immer noch nicht fündig wurde, beschließt sie in Deutschland zu bleiben und das Paar geht getrennte Wege. Hier wird schon eine feministische Ausrichtung in ihrem Leben sichtbar: Unabhängigkeit und Selbstständigkeit steht vor dem Liebesglück. Der Nationalsozialismus trifft auch Schwarzhaupts Karriere. 1933 wird auch sie Opfer einer frauenverachtenden Politik, welche es ihr verbietet weiterhin im Justizdienst tätig zu sein. So folgt eine Phase der Umorientierung, in der sie eine Promotion zum Thema „Fremdwährungsklauseln im deutschen Schuldrecht“ 1935 abschließt. Sie beginnt anschließend bei der Kirchenkanzlei der Deutschen Evangelischen Kirche in Berlin zu arbeiten und wird 1939 als erste Frau zur Konsistorialrätin und 1944 sogar zur Oberkonsistoralrätin ernannt.

This study portrays the Lebanese Christian national movement as a social movement with a national agenda struggling to disseminate its conception of the identity of a country within very diverse and hostile societal settings. I concentrate on the creation process by the ethnic entrepreneurs and their construction of the self-image of the Lebanese Christian and the perception of the "other" in the Arab world. I study the rhetoric of the Christian intelligentsia through an examination of their writings and speeches before, during and after the civil war, and the evolution of that rhetoric along the periods of peace and war. Seine Aufzeichnungen sind ein Torso geblieben. Dennoch enthält bereits der publizierbare Text eine solche Fülle an grundsätzlicher historischer Einsicht und politischer Erkenntnis, daß seine Lektüre weit über den Blickwinkel subjektiver Wertungen hinausträgt. Von Hanfried Müller war, selbstredend, keine Retrospektive zu erwarten, der sich bürgerliches Herrschaftsbewußtsein und schon gar nicht deutsche Kleinbürgerlichkeit akkommodieren könnten. Schließlich verstieß er als Sohn aus »guter Gesellschaft« gegen die ehernen Prinzipien dieser Gesell- schaft; und schon zu seinen Lebzeiten ist ihm sein Klassenverrat niemals verziehen worden. Seine »Erinnerungen« zeichnen nach, warum und wie er und seine Frau Rosemarie Müller-Streisand einen Weg gegangen sind, der - ebenso außer- gewöhnlich wie konsequent - mitten in den Klassenkampf des Kalten Krieges führte, mithin also auch in die Auseinandersetzung mit einem Kir- chenverständnis, dem weitgehend die Signaturen einer konservativen Partei eigneten und das schon deshalb Müllers reformatorische Theologie als Zumutung und Provokation empfinden mußte. The Devotional Writers and Lutheran Spirituality The heart of Lutheran spirituality is found in Luther’s famous axiom Oratio, Meditatio, Tentatio (prayer, meditation, and affliction). The one who has been declared righteous through faith in Christ the crucified and who has died and rose in Baptism will, as the psalmist says, “delight … in the Law of the Lord and in His Law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). He will read, mark, learn, and take the Word to heart. Luther writes concerning meditation on the Biblical truths in the preface of the Large Catechism, “In such reading, conversation, and meditation the Holy Spirit is present and bestows ever new and greater light and devotion, so that it tastes better and better and is digested, as Christ also promises in Matthew 18[:20].”1 Through the Word and Sacraments the entire Trinity makes its dwelling in us and we have union and communion with the divine and are conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29; Colossians 3:10).
