The Oklahoma City Community Foundation manages more than 800 funds with assets in excess of $420 million. These funds represent a wide variety of donor interests from education and scholarships to endowment funds for non-profit agencies to the beautification of public lands and parks. The Oklahoma City Community Foundation also operates the country's largest agency endowment fund program in the country with more than 250 local non-profit agencies with permanent endowment funds.

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is governed by a 15-member board of trustees comprised of business and civic leaders. Trustees are selected to serve due to their proven integrity, community knowledge and their ability to make fair judgments on complex issues.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative

When the Oklahoma City Community Foundations board of trustees approved the New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative in 1998, the decision was made with one simple goal in mind: to encourage more students in Oklahoma County to attend college or other post high school training. The initiative was created upon the belief that to ensure our community remains a quality place to live and work, then higher education must become a viable option for any high school student in Oklahoma County who is eligible and has the desire.

The New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative focuses on not only offering financial support to worthy students through five distinct scholarship programs but also by providing a support system for high school guidance counselors. During the program's first five years, $905,000 was awarded in scholarship funds to 938 students in Oklahoma County. To build upon this success, in 2003 the board of trustees has committed $2.1 million toward the initiative through 2007, more than double the amount allocated in the initial five years.

The New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative is comprised of the following five programs: The Community Foundation Scholars, the Foundation of Promise Scholars, Oklahoma Youth With Promise Scholars, the Non- Traditional Student Scholars and the Nurse Education Program:

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLARS The Community Foundation Scholar program rewards good students who are also good citizens who might not otherwise qualify for awards based solely on the academic standards. The $1,000 per student scholarship is a means by which the Oklahoma City Community Foundation can encourage recipients to be successful college students. In 2004, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation is awarding 93 Community Foundation Scholar awards.

FOUNDATION OF PROMISE SCHOLARS The Foundation of Promise program provides scholarships for first-generation college students — those who will be the first in their family to attend college. To be eligible for a Foundation of Promise Scholar award, a high school junior must apply and agree to complete specific activities in preparation for college admission. Upon completion of these activities, the student becomes eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to any accredited post secondary educational institution. In 2004. 75 students will receive Foundation of Promise Scholar awards.

YOUTH WITH PROMISE SCHOLARS The Oklahoma City Community Foundation works with both public and private agencies to help children who graduated while in Oklahoma's foster care system receive scholarships. Students receive support from volunteer mentors in addition to funds for college. Last year 26 students received scholarships from this program.

NON-TRADITIONAL SCHOLARS Helping adults re-enter the educational system is the goal of the Non-Traditional Scholars program. Working through six agencies, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation identifies students who have completed one educational program and have both the ability and desire to advance to another program. The sponsoring agency identifies the students and agrees to provide mentoring as the student participates in the new educational program.

NURSE EDUCATION PROGRAM In an effort to address the qualified staffing challenges facing area hospitals, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation collaborated with five metropolitan hospitals to launch the Nurse Education Program in 2003. The program offers scholarships to nurses employed at the participating hospital and seeking a RN certification or a bachelor's degree. In 2003-04, the program provided $60,000 in scholarships to eligible nurses at five community hospitals.

OKLAHOMA CITY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION The Oklahoma County Guidance Counselor Network

An important ingredient in the Oklahoma City Community Foundations New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative is the involvement of the guidance counselors at each of the high schools in Oklahoma County. For many students, the guidance counselor is an important source of information on college admission requirements and financial aid resources.

In recognition of the important role they play, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation formed the Oklahoma County Guidance Counselor Network. For many of these counselors, the information shared at the Network’s two workshops per year is an important opportunity to learn about current college admission issues and financial aid opportunities. In addition, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation coordinates campus visits for counselors to universities, colleges and technology centers, both public and private. As an added incentive, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation provides at least one Community Foundation Scholars award to each high school with a participating guidance counselor.

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Central High School Alumni Association (CHSAA) continues with a tradition of education for the community by providing scholarships for students who graduate from high schools. Founded in 1892, Central High School was the first high school in Oklahoma City, providing educational services for Oklahoma City area students until its closure in 1968. According to Robert Ross, class of 1946, the alumni want to continue to honor the tradition of quality education by helping deserving students continue their education after high school.

In addition to the Community Foundation scholars, CHSAA funds at least one vocational technical scholarship and the Leveta Land Scholarship for a student in secretarial science. CHSAA is funding five Community Foundation Scholar awards in 2004.

IRENE P. AND SAMUEL E. FRIERSON EDUCATIONAL TRUST Dr. and Mrs. Frierson were long-term residents of Oklahoma City. They died in the early 1960s. The Friersons had no surviving children and created the Frierson Educational Trust to provide scholarships for students that attend college in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is honored to have the Frierson Educational Trust, currently administered by the Bank of Oklahoma Trust Department, as a sponsor of the Community Foundation Scholars awards.

WINONA S. PRESLEY FUND The Winona S. Presley Fund was established in 1999 and supports a variety of educational programs. Mrs. Presley was a resident of Britton, Oklahoma where she was a longtime supporter of education. In addition to her fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, Mrs. Presley established endowments at the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, the University of Central Oklahoma and . Within the New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative, the Presley Fund supports the activities of the Oklahoma County Guidance Network, enhancing the knowledge and expertise of Oklahoma County's Winona S. Presley guidance counselors.

WILLIAM M. AND JANET S. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND The William M. and Janet S. How to Start a Scholarship Fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation

In addition to the New Opportunities Scholarship Initiative, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation also administers more than 70 additional scholarship funds for a wide variety of groups and organizations, making the Oklahoma City Community Foundation the state’s largest independent administrator of scholarship programs. In 2004. the Oklahoma City Community Foundation will administer scholarship assistance to more than 450 students.

There is no better way for you to invest in the future than establishing or contributing to a scholarship fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. Individuals and organizations have started funds for a variety of reasons. Some want to honor the memory of a loved one, others want to promote a particular profession or occupation and still others seek to support students from specific segments of our society.

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation makes it easy for donors and organizations to establish scholarship funds by providing all of the administrative assistance to manage the funds, selecting the recipients and paying the scholarship award to the appropriate institution. Donors and organizations may choose to be involved in implementing the scholarship program and can be assured that the scholarship fund will continue to be administered according to their intentions.

Perhaps you have a desire to establish a scholarship. A great place to start would be at www.occf.org under the Scholarship Center tab. Another helpful option is to contact Anna-Faye Rose. Scholarship Administrator, at (405) 235-5603 or a. [email protected].
