City Community Foundation Community Scholar Recipients Foundation 2002 funding the promise of tomorrow The Oklahoma City Community Foundation: An Overview

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is a non-profit public charity that works with donors and non profit organizations to develop permanent endowment funds for the benefit of the community.

The Community Foundation was started in 1969 by a group of Oklahoma City businessmen as a way for donors to provide support for non-profit organizations and as a means to address broad community needs. It was created in the spirit of helping donors help the community.

Over the past 33 years, more than 7,000 donors have contributed to more than 800 different funds at the Community Foundation. The assets of the Community Foundation exceed $380 million and it is one of the 20 largest community foundations in the .

The current activities of the Community Foundation are concentrated in the following three areas:

Managing endowment funds for non-profits. The Community Foundation has permanent endowment funds for more than 240 organizations. The earnings on these funds annually support the operating expenses of the beneficiary organizations. The Community Foundation helps develop the funds and provides all of the administrative and investment services.

Managing charitable funds for a wide range of purposes. The Community Foundation works with donors and other groups to create funds that support a wide variety of community purposes. The Community Foundation provides all the administrative and investment services and oversees the use of the earnings for the purposes specified by the donors. The purposes range from scholarship funds to beautification of public lands to assistance for those affected by the Oklahoma City bombing. The Community Foundation works to fulfill a donor’s intentions, even if the donor is no longer actively involved.

Providing leadership in addressing community issues. The trustees of the Community Foundation have identified several focus areas to work actively with other community groups to develop and fund programs and provide grant support for specific, targeted activities. Currently, these focus areas include the Parks and Public Spaces Initiative, Agency Capacity Building, Scholarships and After School Options.

2002 Community Foundation Scholar Recipients

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is pleased to present this commemorative publication to recognize the achievements of the Community Foundation Scholars of 2002. The Community Foundation Scholarship Program rewards good citizen/students who might not otherwise qualify for awards based solely on the highest academic standards. We would like to congratulate each student who has met or exceeded the standards required of a Community Foundation Scholar.

The Community Foundation began focusing on scholarship activities in 1997, when the organization's trustees adopted an aggressive strategic plan that recognized unfilled needs in encouraging students to pursue higher education. The overarching strategic initiative is known as the New Opportunities Program. The Community Foundation Scholars effort, which this year generated awards for 111 students, is an outgrowth of this strategic initiative. Every high school in Oklahoma County has the option to participate in the Community Foundation Scholars program and may receive at least one scholarship. Additional scholarships are awarded to larger schools.

New Opportunities is perhaps unique since it recognizes that scholarships are only one of several vital components needed to insure that students can attend college. In addition to funding, the program provides access to information on other financial resources and higher education institutions, training for counselors on new guidance tools and techniques and a simple, but powerful tool: encouragement.

In addition to the Community Foundation Scholars program, New Opportunities offers three other targeted scholarship programs.

OKLAHOMA YOUTH WITH PROMISE The Community Foundation works with both public and private agencies to help children who have been in foster care receive scholarships. Students receive guidance in addition to funds for college. Last year 26 students received scholarships from this program.

FOUNDATION OF PROMISE This program addresses the needs of first generation college students - those who will be the first in their family to attend college. High school juniors apply and agree to complete specific activities in preparation for college admission. Upon successful completion of these activities, the student becomes eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to any accredited post-secondary educational institution. Nearly 60 awards will be made in 2002.

NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS Helping students re-enter the educational system is the goal of the Non-Traditional Student Program. Working through six agencies, the Community Foundation identifies students who have completed one educational program and have both the ability and desire to move on to another program. The sponsoring agency identifies the students and agrees to provide mentoring as the student participates in the new educational program. Almost 20 awards were made in 2002.

Through the operation of these internal programs as well as the experience of administering more than 60 endowed scholarship funds, the Community Foundation has become a leading authority and source of support to encourage students to pursue higher education. The Promise of Tomorrow 2002 Scholar Sponsors

Central High School Alumni Association

The Central High School Alumni Association (CHSAA) continues with a tradition of education for the community by providing scholarships for students who graduate from central Oklahoma high schools. Founded in 1892, Central High School was the first high school in Oklahoma City, providing educational services for Oklahoma City area students until its closure in 1968. According to Robert Ross, class of 1946 and chairman for the Alumni Association’s scholarship committee, the alumni want to continue to honor the tradition of quality education by helping deserving students continue their education after high school. In addition to the Community Foundation scholars, CHSAA funds at least one vocational technical scholarship and the Leveta Land scholarship for a student in secretarial science. CHSAA is funding five Community Foundation Scholar scholarships to 2002 graduates of Bethany and Westmoore High Schools.

Irene P. and Samuel E. Frierson Educational Trust 30

Dr. and Mrs. Frierson were long-term residents of Oklahoma City. They died in the early 1960s. Dr. Frierson was a native of Mississippi and a graduate of Tulane University. He served as an army surgeon in France during World War I and practiced medicine in Oklahoma City for more than 40 years. The Friersons had no surviving children and created the Frierson Educational Trust to provide scholarships for students that attend college in Oklahoma. The Community Foundation is honored to have the Frierson Educational Trust, currently administered by the Bank of Oklahoma Trust Depart ment, as a sponsor of the Community Foundation Scholars awards.

Mid First Bank

This Oklahoma City-based financial institution has provided scholarship awards for Community Foundation Scholars, Oklahoma Youth With Promise and A Foundation of Promise. Oklahoma Youth with Promise is a state-wide program that grants scholarships to foster children in Oklahoma while A Foundation of Promise is a program for first generation college students. MidFirst is a corporate sponsor of these scholarship programs with hopes that its example will encourage other Oklahoma corporations and families to provide scholarships for students. The Community Foundation appreciates the leadership of George Records, Chairman of Midland Group, for his help in establishing the Community Foundation Scholars program and A Foundation of Prom ise. John Osborne,Vice President of MidFirst Bank, currently serves on the New Opportunities Scholar ship Committee.

Oklahoma City Community Foundation 2002 A Skilled Administrative Team on Your Side

The Community Foundation maintains a scholarship program management team with a wealth of hands-on experience dealing with youth, the ins and outs of college guidance and scholarship administration. That’s important especially when donors want to provide the benefits of scholarship funds without the administrative headaches. Leading the team is Anna-Faye Rose, who joined the Community Foundation to provide social work consultation for case management services provided for survivors of the Murrah Federal Building bombing. She also began direct management of the Community Foundation’s scholarship program for children who had a parent die from the blast. Her experience includes 17 years with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, primarily in foster care and adoptions. She later served as administrator of the Frances E. Willard Home in Tulsa, a residential childcare facility for adolescent girls. Ms. Rose is a Licensed Social Worker and is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. Linda Keefe brings a view from inside the high school counseling system. She served 20 years as a secondary public school counselor before joining the Community Foundation as part of the scholarship team. She also has teaching experience, college academic advisory experience and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. Several other members of the Community Foundation serve in support roles, including providing specialized fund management services, promotion and development and staffing a variety of special events. 52
