Oklahoma City Community Foundation Community Scholar Recipients Foundation 2002 funding the promise of tomorrow The Oklahoma City Community Foundation: An Overview The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is a non-profit public charity that works with donors and non profit organizations to develop permanent endowment funds for the benefit of the community. The Community Foundation was started in 1969 by a group of Oklahoma City businessmen as a way for donors to provide support for non-profit organizations and as a means to address broad community needs. It was created in the spirit of helping donors help the community. Over the past 33 years, more than 7,000 donors have contributed to more than 800 different funds at the Community Foundation. The assets of the Community Foundation exceed $380 million and it is one of the 20 largest community foundations in the United States. The current activities of the Community Foundation are concentrated in the following three areas: Managing endowment funds for non-profits. The Community Foundation has permanent endowment funds for more than 240 organizations. The earnings on these funds annually support the operating expenses of the beneficiary organizations. The Community Foundation helps develop the funds and provides all of the administrative and investment services. Managing charitable funds for a wide range of purposes. The Community Foundation works with donors and other groups to create funds that support a wide variety of community purposes. The Community Foundation provides all the administrative and investment services and oversees the use of the earnings for the purposes specified by the donors. The purposes range from scholarship funds to beautification of public lands to assistance for those affected by the Oklahoma City bombing. The Community Foundation works to fulfill a donor’s intentions, even if the donor is no longer actively involved. Providing leadership in addressing community issues. The trustees of the Community Foundation have identified several focus areas to work actively with other community groups to develop and fund programs and provide grant support for specific, targeted activities. Currently, these focus areas include the Parks and Public Spaces Initiative, Agency Capacity Building, Scholarships and After School Options. Helping Donors Help the Community Since 1969 Community Foundation Scholars 2002 Community Foundation Scholar Recipients The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is pleased to present this commemorative publication to recognize the achievements of the Community Foundation Scholars of 2002. The Community Foundation Scholarship Program rewards good citizen/students who might not otherwise qualify for awards based solely on the highest academic standards. We would like to congratulate each student who has met or exceeded the standards required of a Community Foundation Scholar. The Community Foundation began focusing on scholarship activities in 1997, when the organization's trustees adopted an aggressive strategic plan that recognized unfilled needs in encouraging students to pursue higher education. The overarching strategic initiative is known as the New Opportunities Program. The Community Foundation Scholars effort, which this year generated awards for 111 students, is an outgrowth of this strategic initiative. Every high school in Oklahoma County has the option to participate in the Community Foundation Scholars program and may receive at least one scholarship. Additional scholarships are awarded to larger schools. New Opportunities is perhaps unique since it recognizes that scholarships are only one of several vital components needed to insure that students can attend college. In addition to funding, the program provides access to information on other financial resources and higher education institutions, training for counselors on new guidance tools and techniques and a simple, but powerful tool: encouragement. In addition to the Community Foundation Scholars program, New Opportunities offers three other targeted scholarship programs. OKLAHOMA YOUTH WITH PROMISE The Community Foundation works with both public and private agencies to help children who have been in foster care receive scholarships. Students receive guidance in addition to funds for college. Last year 26 students received scholarships from this program. FOUNDATION OF PROMISE This program addresses the needs of first generation college students - those who will be the first in their family to attend college. High school juniors apply and agree to complete specific activities in preparation for college admission. Upon successful completion of these activities, the student becomes eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to any accredited post-secondary educational institution. Nearly 60 awards will be made in 2002. NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS Helping students re-enter the educational system is the goal of the Non-Traditional Student Program. Working through six agencies, the Community Foundation identifies students who have completed one educational program and have both the ability and desire to move on to another program. The sponsoring agency identifies the students and agrees to provide mentoring as the student participates in the new educational program. Almost 20 awards were made in 2002. Through the operation of these internal programs as well as the experience of administering more than 60 endowed scholarship funds, the Community Foundation has become a leading authority and source of support to encourage students to pursue higher education.
