It’s the ideal place to study for a law degree as there is a thriving law community.

Lucy Mair Barrister Garden Court North Chambers Bar Professional Training Course

I studied for my GDL at Manchester Law School and so it was the obvious place to continue my professional training and complete my BPTC qualification. I was keen to study with a University rather than a commercial provider, to have access to the specialist facilities and expertise of the tutors.

Manchester is the ideal place to study for a law degree as there is a thriving legal community, which the University has great links with. There are visits to Barrister’s Chambers, which I took full advantage of, and a careers adviser for the Law School.

The tutors are very experienced and very responsive; they are approachable and friendly and happy to provide feedback. Study is a combination of full group lectures and tutorial sessions, which are very useful to have more detailed discussion.

Professional regulators in the legal sector are currently conducting an extensive consultation about legal education and training. This includes review about the routes and qualifications to become a solicitor or barrister. Some of the considerations include changing or ending existing routes, or opening new ones. The current routes of a qualifying law degree or the GDL, and the BPTC to become a barrister will remain in place until summer 2017. The current route of a qualifying law degree or GDL and LPC will remain in place until summer 2018.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board will make announcements after their consultations and reviews at the end of 2015. These decisions will then inform the different routes to qualification as a solicitor or barrister.

mmu.ac.uk/study/postgraduate I was impressed by the staff and their diverse professional backgrounds. Their experience helped me immensely.

James Makin GDL and LPC graduate

James studied History at undergraduate degree level, and after studying for his GDL and LPC has now secured a training contract. I studied for my undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester and was keen to carry on studying in this thriving and bustling city. I attended an open day at Manchester Met and talked to staff at the Manchester Law Fair. I was won over by the University and convinced that a legal education was for me. I picked up so much from my GDL course that I naturally stayed and continued my studies with the LPC. I came from a non-law background and my six-hour a week humanities course was very different. The intensity of my law courses took quite a bit of adapting to, but the tutors were so friendly and really put in the hours to make sure I adapted to the change in pace that the GDL brought. The staff were in a great position to offer me sound career advice and tips about the best route into the legal profession; the route that was most suited to me personally. I was able to spend lots of time with them, talking through my options. Their insights helped me make the difficult decision between the solicitor and barrister route; I eventually chose the former. During the GDL, I had the opportunity to take part in advocacy and mooting which was a great way to develop my skills and test if the advocacy side of the profession was for me. The support we all received from the careers staff was excellent. They arranged many speakers at the University, which gave us the chance to question people already in the profession, as well as to improve our networking skills. The most useful aspect of the GDL was that it covered everything! Coming from a non-law background, I found this to be invaluable. The LPC was very practical as all class work examples were based on real life cases that you could encounter. Throughout my time here, I’ve been able to take advantage of the legal work experience on offer through the careers service. During the GDL, I was successful in securing pro bono work experience through the regular stream of vacancy email updates. I worked for Russell Jones and Walker (now Slater and Gordon) on a two-week placement, taking details of initial claims. It was daunting and threw me in at the deep end, but it was a great experience. I also found work at a barrister’s chambers, again advertised through the careers service. The administration team at the University provided great guidance when I was applying for these roles. 22 You will receive the opportunity to hone your legal skills through Legal Practice Course involvement in one of our voluntary legal work schemes that offer pro bono legal services to those in need. Manchester Law School also LPC offers an outstanding work placement programme to enable students to gain vital work experience during their electives. Nadia McMahon-Wilson Legal Practice Course Training contract with Franklins in Leighton Buzzard

Nadia completed her undergraduate degree in London and researched other providers, including many professional colleges, but chose to study at Manchester Law School as she felt she would benefit from the collegiate environment.

I chose Manchester Metropolitan University because of its reputation as I had heard good things about the University from friends. What drew me was the breadth of professional experience of the staff – not always a given at professional colleges. So many of them have strong links to the practising world, which means we benefited from their networks and they brought real insight to lectures and tutorials.

The LPC at the University is a very practical course, and was quite different to the experience I had at undergraduate level. It was also pretty challenging, particularly the skills assessments where we were assessed on our two interviewing or advocacy competencies. We were videoed and had to present a case to a judge or interview someone as if we were practising lawyers. The course gave me the confidence to do that, and the positive and constructive feedback from tutors spurred me on.

The students on my course were diverse and the work was mainly group work. Having so many different perspectives meant I learnt more from other people. 24 Core units Bar Professional • Advocacy • Civil Litigation Training Course • Evidence and Remedies BPTC • Criminal Litigation Evidence and Sentencing • Professional Ethics • Opinion Writing Full-time | 1 year Fee | UK/EU £13,930 • Drafting Non-EU international £13,930 • Conference Skills • Resolution of Disputes out of Court Part-time | 2 years Fee | UK/EU £6,965 Suitable for international students. Manchester Law School was recommended to me by a previous lecturer and I knew of its excellent reputation for human rights law.

The course is very challenging but the tutors are extremely supportive and approachable and always willing to dedicate time and energy to supporting students. They are highly qualified and also have good contacts within legal firms, meaning you get a very real insight into professional practice.

I would strongly recommend the LL.M to prospective students, as it has significantly enhanced my knowledge in the area of human rights and as a result, my career prospects. 28

The facilities are fantastic; we are taught in small chambers groups of about eight students, which I feel is a real strength.

Suzanne Hargreaves Bar Professional Training Course

Suzanne is currently working as an Independent Consultant within child protection and decided to train to become a barrister after completing the law conversion course.

In my current role I’m heavily involved in strategic matters, so that’s really why I started looking at law. I’d like to work as a barrister within family law as I have an extensive background in working with vulnerable children and this course is paving the way for me to work in childcare proceedings or criminal law.

I’m from the North West so Manchester was an obvious choice and I know I will want to stay and practice here. The factors that influenced my decision of where to study were finding somewhere with a good track record, good facilities that would give me the best experience and plenty of opportunities to meet people who were already on the circuit. I felt that Manchester Metropolitan University offered me the best opportunity with respect to all of those things.

It’s an interesting, and very much professional course. The relationships you have with tutors are different from on an undergraduate course, much more professional. The teaching is good and practising barristers provide some of the teaching so we’re getting a real perspective, not just what’s on the syllabus. They also teach us about what to expect when we’re in practice as well, which I feel is invaluable.

We’re given a chambers room which means we’ve always got somewhere we can actually sit and study. In addition to that, we have access to the main library facilities as well as our own BPTC library.

Part of the reason I was attracted to the course was the extra-curricular activities; we are able to attend lots of networking events. On a Tuesday evening, we have external speakers who talk to us about different areas of practice and we have the opportunity to ask direct questions to a practicing professional outside of the University.

I would absolutely recommend the Bar course at Manchester Met. It’s challenging and requires a great deal of dedication but I have to say, it is incredibly enjoyable.
