Engelhardt believed that this ‚natural kind of life‘ outside the modern industrial society would enable the human being to become one entity with what they called god and to experience paradise on earth. De onmeetbare mens: Schedels, ras en wetenschap in Nederlands-Indië [Immeasurable Man: Skulls, Race and Science in the Dutch East Indies]. Nijmegen: Vantilt. 191 pages; maps; plates; index. ISBN: 978-9460042195 (pb). In Dutch. It seems appropriate to me to translate the Dutch term 'wetenschap' in the sub-title of Sysling's book with 'science', since the discipline concerned is physical anthropology and its practitioners were careful to provide objective data: a multitude of standardized measurements of the human body. Sysling focuses on three Dutch practitioners, from successive generations: Herman ten Kate (1858-1931), Johan Kleiweg de Zwaan (1875- 1971) and Hendrik Bijlmer (1890-1959). As was usual in the discipline (p. 5), all three were physicians. Kleiweg de Zwaan was the most prominent academic: in 1916 he became a professor in the University of Amsterdam, a position he held until his retirement in 1939. In 1925 he published De rassen van de Indische archipel [Races of the (Dutch East) Indian Archipelago], a review of physical anthropological work there written for the general public.

And there was also a touch of magic, right at the beginning, with 3 Alumni in the Oscar race… Starting from January, the film The Innocents was selected in the Sundance competition and went on to achieve huge box office success not only in France, but now also in the US. In a truly special year, 7 TFL films were presented across the various sections in Cannes; films that had participated in different TFL programmes - some being developed, some also financially supported. In Locarno Godless won the Golden Leopard and in Venice, Fien Troch was awarded Best Director of the Orizzonti section. During the Torino Film Festival, we are presenting the biggest number of TFL films ever, 14 in total, TorinoFilmLab with Jesús in competition and The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki in Festa Mobile. Only in 2016, 25 TFL-supported films were released, bringing the number up to 68 for the first 9 years. For our 10th year, we have already announced some changes and some novelties. TFL is venturing into new territories that need to be explored. We will try and do it with the energy and commitment that has guided us through these years. As we write, our newly launched SeriesLab has reached 100 applications, from all over Europe and abroad. All of this would not be possible without the numerous institutions and partners that support us: the Italian Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo, Regione Piemonte, Comune di Torino, Creative Europe.
