(Prof. Ambrose Pollich DDS) DISCLAIMER | DMCA NU1BI135GYO9 \\ Book # Imperium: A Fiction of the South Seas IMPERIUM: A FICTION OF THE SOUTH SEAS Audible Studios on Brilliance, 2016. CD-Audio. Condition: New. Unabridged. Language: English . Brand New. An outrageous, fantastical, uncategorizable novel of obsession, adventure, and coconuts. In 1902, a radical vegetarian and nudist from Nuremberg named August Engelhardt set sail for what was then called the Bismarck Archipelago. His destination: the island Kabakon. His goal: to found a colony based on worship of the sun and coconuts. His malnourished body was found on the beach on Kabakon in 1919; he was 43 years old. Christian Kracht s Imperium uses the outlandish details of Engelhardt s life to cra a fable about the allure of extremism and its fundamental foolishness. Engelhardt is at once a sympathetic outsider - mocked, misunderstood, physically assaulted - and a rigid ideologue, and his misguided notions of purity and his spiral into madness presage the horrors of the mid-20th century. Playing with the tropes of classic adventure tales like Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe, Kracht s novel, an international best seller, is funny, bizarre, shocking, and poignant - sometimes all in the same minute. His allusions are misleading, his historical timelines are twisted, his narrator is unreliable - and the result is a novel that is also a mirror cabinet and a maze pitted with trapdoors. Both a provocative satire and a serious meditation on the fragility and audacity of human activity, Imperium is impossible to categorize, and utterly unlike anything you ve heard before. • A History of Veganism from 1806
1 World Veganism – past, present, and future By John Davis, former IVU Manager and Historian A collection of blogs © John Davis 2010-12 Introduction This PDF e-book is about 8mb, 219 pages A4, (equivalent to 438 page paperback book), so I strongly recommend that you save a copy to your own disk, then open it in the Adobe Acrobat Reader. That way, you won’t have to download it all again if you want to read more of it sometime later. Creating this as a PDF e-book has several advantages, especially if you are reading this on a device connected to the internet. For example: - in the blog about interviews on SMTV, just click on the links to watch the videos - in the bibliography click to read a complete scan of an original very old book. - on the contents page click a link to go direct to any item, then click ‘back to top’. - you can also, of course, use other features such as search, zoom etc. etc. - a great advance on printed books… It should work on any device, though an ipad/tablet is ideal for this as there are lots of big colour photos, or on smart-phones try rotating for best results, on a larger computer monitor try view/page display/two up, to read it like a book. The blogs were posted weekly from February 2010 to December 2012 and each is self- contained, with the assumption that readers might not have seen any of the others. So feel free to start anywhere, and read them in any order, no need to read from the beginning.

  • August Engelhardt - Kokovorischer Heils- Bringer Oder Dogmatischer Wahnsinniger?
Dis|kurs - Jahrgang 7 | Ausgabe 1-2011 Thema: Politische Ikonen August Engelhardt - Kokovorischer Heils- bringer oder dogmatischer Wahnsinniger? Sebastian Huncke Universität Münster, Historisches Seminar E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract This essay is about the German dropout and Lebensreformer August Engelhardt, who left Germany in 1902, to settle on the South Sea-island Kabakon. This small island, that belongs to Papua Neuguinea was part of the German colonien empire. There he founded the Sonnenorden, a sect, whose members called themselves Kokovoren and practised a con- sequent nudism and a strict coconut-diet. Engelhardt believed that this ‚natural kind of life‘ outside the modern industrial society would enable the human being to become one entity with what they called god and to experience paradise on earth. The current state of research describes Engelhardt as an idosyncratic exotic. This essay aims to describe Engel- hardt and his Sonnenorden in the context of Wilhelminian society and the Lebensreformbewegung. The following text will discuss Engelhardt‘s ‚back to nature‘ program by outlining the dualism of nature vs. metro- polis. The program and ideas of Engelhardt are based on the believe of progress and religious dogma. This eclecticism allows us to call him a theosophic. He therefore was much less no exotic marginal phenomenon, on the contrary he was more a child of his times. Schlüsselwörter Kokovorismus, Lebensreformbewegung, Wilhelminisches Kaiserreich, Theosophie 86 Sebastian Huncke “Is it Engelhardt who is mad, or is it we?”1 „O wie herrlich, wie göttlich, wie einfach ist diese Wahrheit!

ISBN: 978-9460042195 (pb). In Dutch. It seems appropriate to me to translate the Dutch term 'wetenschap' in the sub-title of Sysling's book with 'science', since the discipline concerned is physical anthropology and its practitioners were careful to provide objective data: a multitude of standardized measurements of the human body. Sysling focuses on three Dutch practitioners, from successive generations: Herman ten Kate (1858-1931), Johan Kleiweg de Zwaan (1875- 1971) and Hendrik Bijlmer (1890-1959). As was usual in the discipline (p. 5), all three were physicians. Kleiweg de Zwaan was the most prominent academic: in 1916 he became a professor in the University of Amsterdam, a position he held until his retirement in 1939. In 1925 he published De rassen van de Indische archipel [Races of the (Dutch East) Indian Archipelago], a review of physical anthropological work there written for the general public.

TorinoFilmLab Catalogue CatalogueCatalogueCatalogue2016 Catalogue TFL Catalogue 2016 16projects | talents | films In 2016, running up to our Meeting Event’s 9th edition, TorinoFilmLab’s Alumni have been selected and awarded at all major Festivals. And there was also a touch of magic, right at the beginning, with 3 Alumni in the Oscar race… Starting from January, the film The Innocents was selected in the Sundance competition and went on to achieve huge box office success not only in France, but now also in the US. In a truly special year, 7 TFL films were presented across the various sections in Cannes; films that had participated in different TFL programmes - some being developed, some also financially supported. In Locarno Godless won the Golden Leopard and in Venice, Fien Troch was awarded Best Director of the Orizzonti section. During the Torino Film Festival, we are presenting the biggest number of TFL films ever, 14 in total, TorinoFilmLab with Jesús in competition and The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki in Festa Mobile. Only in 2016, 25 TFL-supported films were released, bringing the number up to 68 for the first 9 years. For our 10th year, we have already announced some changes and some novelties. TFL is venturing into new territories that need to be explored. We will try and do it with the energy and commitment that has guided us through these years. As we write, our newly launched SeriesLab has reached 100 applications, from all over Europe and abroad. All of this would not be possible without the numerous institutions and partners that support us: the Italian Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo, Regione Piemonte, Comune di Torino, Creative Europe.
