Columbus City Schools This is an older resource which can provide ideas for teaching the Standards for English Language Arts Curriculum student mastery using The Cathedral, but it is aligned to Ohio's Learning Writing Standards before the 2017 revisions and Ohio's State Tests. Course/Grade Text Type Grade 7 Book Unit Cathedral: The Informative/ Explanatory (15 Days) Story of Its Construction (1120L) Portfolio Writing Prompt: After reading Cathedral, write an essay that describes how a famous building or a specific building in your community was constructed. Research the reasons the structure was built and the way the structure has been used over the years. Include multimedia resources such as a power point, video, posters or other multimedia to clarify your essay. Common Core Writing: Text types, responding to reading, and research The Standards acknowledge the fact that whereas some writing skills, such as the ability to plan, revise, edit, and publish, are applicable to many types of writing, other skills are more properly defined in terms of specific writing types: arguments, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives. Standard 9 stresses the importance of the reading-writing connection by requiring students to draw upon and write about evidence from literary and informational texts. Because of the centrality of writing to most forms of inquiry, research standards are prominently included in this strand, though skills important to research are infused throughout the document. (CCSS, Introduction, 8) Informational Text Informational/explanatory writing conveys information accurately. This kind of writing serves one or more closely related purposes: to increase readers knowledge of a subject, to help readers better understand a procedure or process, or to provide readers with an enhanced comprehension of a concept. -

Young Adult Book Discussion Kits Young Adult Book Discussion Kits are available to library patrons for use by home and community discussion groups, as well as teachers in the classroom setting. Each kit contains a set of thirty identical soft-cover books accompanied by a book discussion guide. The guides feature information about the author, reviews of the book, discussion questions, suggested further readings, and other pertinent information. Each kit is packaged in a canvas tote bag and may be borrowed for six weeks. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “A TOUGH LITTLE PATCH OF HISTORY”: ATLANTA’S MARKETPLACE FOR GONE WITH THE WIND MEMORY By JENNIFER W. DICKEY Under the Direction of Clifford M. Kuhn ABSTRACT Since the 1936 publication of Gone with the Wind and the 1939 release of David O. Selznick’s film version of the book, the city of Atlanta has been associated in the public mind with Margaret Mitchell’s tale of the Old South, the Civil War and Reconstruction. The work of Mitchell and Selznick created images that shaped the public’s understanding of southern history and of Atlanta’s identity. This dissertation examines a series of attempts to capitalize on the fame and popularity of Gone with the Wind in museums in the Atlanta area. Focusing on the interpretive efforts of three entities—the Atlanta History Center, Clayton County, and the Margaret Mitchell House, Inc.—this study reveals the problematic nature of Mitchell’s and Selznick’s work and the impact that the book and film have had on shaping Atlanta’s identity and the public memory of the South. -

THE BLESSINGS OF BUSINESS: CORPORATE AMERICA AND CONSERVATIVE EVANGELICALISM IN THE SUNBELT AGE, 1945-2000 by DARREN ELLIOTT GREM (Under the Direction of James C. Cobb) ABSTRACT Scholars and pundits have often cast postwar conservative evangelicalism as a kind of doppelganger of liberal activism, as a grassroots expression of populist will against the social revolutions of the 1960s. In contrast, this dissertation argues that the rise of culturally and politically-engaged, conservative evangelicals first began in the midst of the New Deal state in the 1940s and 1950s and depended heavily on another will—the will of corporations and corporate actors, especially those working out of the economic and social context of an emergent, postwar “Sunbelt.” There, in the midst of a burgeoning regional economy that stretched from Georgia to Texas to California, a postwar generation of business leaders worked with evangelical leaders to resurrect the cause of religious, economic, and political conservatism in the midst of the early Cold War. In the 1960s and 1970s, as the Culture Wars heated up, they brought their faith, free market policies, and “family values” to the forefront of American public life. The blessings of business were everywhere—in the ministries of celebrity evangelists like Billy Graham and lay evangelists like R.G. LeTourneau; in corporate-funded missionary groups like Young Life, Campus Crusade for Christ, The Navigators, and Wycliffe Bible Translators; in independent evangelical colleges strung throughout the South and West; in everyday operations at thousands of small businesses and dozens of mass-market corporations; in evangelical-inspired “biblical success” books and in a cottage industry of evangelical-led entrepreneurial seminars; in evangelical culture industries and megachurches; and, most especially, in the careers of evangelical political leaders from Jerry Falwell to George W. -

University Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Gerald Walton echoed the sentiments of Center faculty, staff, and students in a recent comment on Wilson's appointment: "Charles Wil- son is a long-time member of the Uni- versity faculty and is a nationally recognized authority on the South. He will provide outstanding leadership for the Center, and I look forward to work- ing with him." An intellectual and cultural historian, Wilson received a bachelor of arts and a master of arts in history from the Uni- versity of Texas at EI Paso and a doctor- ate of philosophy in history from the University of Texas at Austin. After teaching at the University of Wurzburg, the University of Texas at EI Paso, and Texas Tech University, Wilson came to the Center in 1981 to coedit the 1,634- page Encyclopedia of Southern Culture and to accept a teaching appointment in Southern Studies and History. Well they were definitely here at one point. For example, of the television, Macaulay writes "Judging by the impact marks on the top and sides of the upper altar, some aspect of this communication was dependent upon pounding the surface. I remembered reading this in grammar school, but in retrospect I have no idea who it's written for. This new book—inspired by three classic, award-winning books—reveals the how and why behind some of David Macaulay lives with his family in Vermont.
