The Bank of Greece and the Hellenic Observatory hold a joint conference on “The cost of the financial crisis: planning an exit strategy”.

Cyprus - Hellenic Observatory Activities 2008-2009

, Following the start of a major new UN-supported initiative to reunify the island of Cyprus the Hellenic Observatory hosted two major events during the past year. “Developments in the peace negotiations in Cyprus: Finding a solution by Cypriots for Cypriots”.

Thefirstofthesewasahighlevelintercommunaldiscussion panel,heldontheeveningof14October2008.Coorganised with Cypriots4Cyprus ,aUKbasedgroupthatbringstogether members from the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities living in Britain, the event was centred on four speakers: Dr George Vassiliou, former President of the Republic of Cy- prus ; Mr Ali Erel, President of the Cyprus-EU Association; Ms Alev Adil of the University of Greenwich ;and Mr Spy- ros Christou from the Cyprus Interpeace Project . Profes- sor Kevin Featherstone wasinthechair. Panel Debate Professor Ray Barrell & Professor Nicos Christodoulakis “Does the Euro–zone Experience show 'one size fits all' has been a failure?” On10December2008theHellenicObservatoryorganised a panel debate on the evaluation of the Eurozone experience sincetheestablishmentofEMUin1999. Theeventtookplacejustaroundthetimeasthecelebrations forthe 10 years of EMU wereabouttobeginandjustasthe financialcrisiswasbeginningtobitetherealeconomy.Despite abroadconsensusthatEMUhassofarbeenasuccess,itwas commonly believed that the EMU architecture had not been tested, until then, by a serious crisis or other threat. In this sense,theorganisationofthispaneldebate,astheeffectsof thefinancialcrisiswereunfolding,wasextremelytimely.
