  • Kort Introduktion Til Parkour Og Freerunning

His readiness to offer an alternative perspective has provided me with many opportunities to grow as a critical thinker, researcher, and as a person. I am grateful to Prof Devon Polaschek, Dr Clare-Ann Fortune, and all members of their lab for encouraging me to pursue an innovative research project, as well as for providing inspiration, insights and connections to other specialist research areas in offender rehabilitation. The German Academic Exchange Service deserves special mention for the financial support that allowed me to take up my dream course of study in the country that is farthest away from my home. Finally, I would like to thank Damien Puddle and Martini Miller for lively discussions, valuable feedback, and sharing the passion regarding research, parkour/freerunning, as well as youth development. iv v Abstract Parkour/freerunning is a training method for overcoming physical and mental obstacles, and has been proposed as a unique tool to engage youth in healthy leisure activities (e.g., Gilchrist & Wheaton, 2011). Although practitioners have started to utilise parkour/freerunning in programmes for youth at risk of antisocial behaviour, this claim is insufficiently grounded in theory and research to date.

Sure, many had seen Sébastien Foucan scramble over buildings with the agility of a panther on speed in the opening sequence of “Casino Royale,” but few knew what to call what he was doing beyond, “Whoa — awesome.” These days, you can Google “parkour” and watch videos uploaded by fanatics from all over the world. “The Prince of Persia” video game features some of the ferociously agile moves and “The Office” has even done a spoof on the sport. Catapulting the underground art even further into the mainstream consciousness is MTV's new show “Ultimate Parkour Challenge,” co-created with the recently launched World Freerunning & Parkour Federation (WFPF). But the show has also stirred up controversy in the parkour community, a world already rife with debate over its purpose and application.

PAIGE, FORREST MASTERMAN, M.S. AUGUST 2017 ARCHITECTURE A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE ALTERNATIVE APPROPRIATION OF URBAN SPACE BY PARKOUR PRACTITIONERS Thesis Advisor: William T. Willoughby Parkour is both a movement art and an urban sport, a discipline of movement and self-improvement, where practitioners utilize natural body movements such as running, jumping, and climbing to overcome obstacles, both physical and mental, in the urban environment efficiently and creatively. This phenomenological study investigates parkour practitioners, referred to as traceurs, and their alternative appropriations of urban spaces, defining the essence of their lived experiences. Utilizing the interview as the primary data collection method, as well as first and third person video investigation, data was collected from parkour practitioners and parkour communities from the Midwest in the United States in order to define the essence of their collective lived experiences. The purpose of this study is to understand the contemporary perspective through which parkour practitioners view and experience the urban environment in order to contribute to the scholarly conversation between architecture, parkour, and urban space. The importance and significance of this study is to investigate a contemporary perspective on, and interaction with, urban space in order to understand this new usage of the city, identifying which urban conditions facilitate these movements so that designers can effectively incorporate this type of movement expression into urban spaces.

  • Hacking Urban Space: Parkour and Squatting
HACKING URBAN SPACE: PARKOUR AND SQUATTING ZEYNEP VAİZOĞLU JULY 2014 HACKING URBAN SPACE: PARKOUR AND SQUATTING A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS BY ZEYNEP VAİZOĞLU IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF DESIGN IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES JULY 2014 ABSTRACT HACKING URBAN SPACE: PARKOUR AND SQUATTING Vaizoğlu, Zeynep M.Des. in Design Studies Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Zeynep ARDA Co-Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahenk YILMAZ July 2014 The thesis looks at the practice of hacking urban space through the analysis based on contemporary architectural discourse on spatial production. It is maintained that hacking is a witty, defiant activity in any context, applicable in any medium. Emerging as programming a computer in an original way, hacking gained a wide array of connotations in time, the philosophy and the practice of the practice pervaded daily life. Following pioneering arguments on social space and the right to the city, it is argued that urban space can be hacked, opening up novel ways of producing space. The hack expresses criticism towards the established systems’ rule over urban space, using space as a tool to manifest the dominant ideologies. In addition, the culture of hacking and the hack as abstraction serve to postulate how hackers work in the city, subverting and intervening into urban space. Parkour and squatting as practices of hacking urban space are discussed in the thesis through their actual interventions. It is suggested that hacking not only questions the spatial production in the cities and the control of established systems over it but also reproduces urban space in novel ways.
